Girls grow up with mixed messages. We are supposed to be sexy, and smart; thin, yet strong; beautiful, but not vain. Growing up we probably all felt alone in our struggles to find a balance. When I first read Reviving Ophelia, years ago, I realized the struggles I felt, weren't just an inconvience, but an epidemic that disables hundreds of thousands of girls, and it infects more each year. It isn't just one reason, but a myriad, and I want to understand it better and hopefully one day, it won't be of epidemic proportions anymore. We need strong, healthy role-models. They are out there...we just have to look past the exposed mid-drifts and low-rise pants. The media hasn't made this easy...
