What Do "Juniors" Do?

We are involved with several Special Projects throughout the year, including our annual soda sale at the Bristol Mum Festival and our Annual City-Wide Spelling Bee. Thank you to all who help make our Annual Bee a success. "Juniors" also donate to community organizations, provide Thanksgiving dinners in food baskets to needy families, donate and wrap Christmas presents for children who wouldn't otherwise have any gifts under the tree, bake cookies for local residents of nursing and convalescent homes, give baked goods in appreciation of our firefighters, work at a local soup kitchen, provide toiletries for a local battered women's shelter, and so much more!

Since its inception, our club has donated thousands of dollars to a wide variety of educational, cultural and civic causes, with the majority of the funds being utilized within Connecticut:

In addition to sponsoring local projects, we also contribute to State Project, which runs for 2 years each. The first State Junior Project, in 1950, was Mental Hospitals in CT and Stamps for Wounded Veterans.

We are excited to announce that we have replaced our State Project with a Long-Term Affiliation beginning in September of 2002 that will run for 6 years. We are pleased that Time For Life has been elected for this project by the CJW membership. Runners-up included Easter Seals Goodwill Industries of New Haven, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bridgeport, Special Wishes and The American Red Cross. Congratulations to our winner and runners-up.

Our 2000-2002 CJW State Project was Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit.

The 1998-2000 CJW State Project was Roaring Brook Nature Center Preschool Education. This was for the benefit of inner city children.

In 1988 and again in 1996, the CJW State Project was Special Wishes, a non-profit program based in Connecticut that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. 51 wishes were granted, with over $118,000 raised statewide! Our club alone raised over $2,000 for this worthwhile organization.

Other past projects have included Civil Defense (1952), the Children's Wing at CT Valley Hospital (1962), Children's Center of Hamden (1968), Kidney Foundation (1970), Lupus Foundation (1974 & 1980), Juvenile Diabetes (1976), Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (1982), UCONN Children's Cancer Program (1984), Project Discovery (Camp Hemlocks - 1986), UCONN Pediatric Pulmonary Program (1990), Beardsley Zoo (1992), and UCONN Cranial/Facial Unit (1994) among others.
