Napoleon, in a continuation of the French Revolution, fought
a series of wars against an alliance of several European monarchies whose
dynastic rulers feared that the popularity of democratic reforms in France
might spread to other countries. Therefore, Austria, Britain, Prussia,
Spain, the Netherlands, and Sardinia together formed the First Coalition,
whose aim was to defeat Napoleon's forces and restore French nobility to
the throne.
