The City Of Summit, like many other communities, recently
had an election for the position of mayor. For the first time in 100 years,
the good citizens broke with convention and elected a Democrat Jordan Glatt.
Frequently, Republicans and Democrats do not see eye-to-eye on many issue, but
when considering the reactivation of the Rahway Valley Railroad there is no
disagreement. To illustrate this, refer to the following excerpts from
speeches by the new mayor Jordan Glatt and Walter Long the outgoing mayor:
State of the City by Jordan Glatt (partial)
:
"As mayor, I pledge to reach out and work hard to build a coalition
of likeminded Union County communities - committed to working with county
government to find solutions to critical issues like controlling their ever
increasing tax demands; and reversing their ill-considered decision to
permit the railroad to cross our communities. While the case for our
communities against the railroad may have suffered a setback, the fight is
far from over but we need to be strong and speak with one voice - a voice
that will be heard not just at the county level - but statewide."
:
Mayor's Final Address by Walter Long (partial)
:
"The reactivation of the Rahway Valley Railroad is a major concern and
we should continue our efforts to stop it. I have often said we are not
obstructionist, but no economic, environmental or safety reports have been
made and I doubt they even exist. There has been no formal presentation or
public meetings by the freeholders or county manager to explain in detail
the overall reactivation plan."
:
In the final analysis, we are very pleased to see that in
spite of traditional party differences they are together on this issue. We
feel confident that Mayor Glatt will carry on the battle against the
reactivation of the Rahway Valley Railroad and the Staten Island Railway. For
