"The Disappearing Parking Lot"

The August 25, 2001 issue of the Summit Herald reported that the construction of the Briant Park Commons project had begun. They also quoted the statements of Mr. Dan Bernier, spokesman for the Union County Parks Department, regarding the disposition of the park's parking lot. Basically, the developers agreed to move the 10 parking spaces to the other end of the park. - Full Story>

It is over one year since the construction started, and as you saw in the previous page, they are tearing apart Park Drive and the parking lot. Now the visitors must park on the busy streets that border the park - Briant Parkway and Springfield Avenue, On the weekends the street parking spaces have become very difficult to find. In addition, parents with baby strollers must unload their precious cargo on these busy streets, and the only handicapped parking spaces were eliminated. This raises the question:

  • Why didn't the Parks Department insist that the lot be moved before eliminating the existing parking spaces?

According to the Mr. Bernier, a long-standing deed (with the county) allowed access along Park Drive to the previous owners of the property and that restriction is still in place. This means that the builders and eventually the tenants of the apartments have access over this road, but as of September 3rd the tax-paying public no longer does. Therefore, the second question is:

  • Did the county consider the public's use of Park Drive when negotiating with K&K Developers and Briant Park Commons, Inc.?

A copy of this page will be sent to the Director of Union County's Department of Parks and Recreation.
