The Guy with the Charger's Charger Pictorial and Restoration Story

My 1969 Dodge Charger, when I brought it home on June 24, 1996

My Charger as of May 1997

Before my Prom! May 1997

This is the story of my Charger. As stated above, I purchased my beautiful yellow 1969 Dodge Charger on June 24, 1996 in Lockwood, NJ from Micheal Shea of Charlotte NC. The Charger's 318cid engine ran, but just barely. The Oil pump was shot so my father and I decided to have the whole thing rebuilt.

I'm the fourth owner of this car. The car is originally from Charlotte, NC and only spent two years in New Jersey. I have been unable to find the first owner. I have been able to come in contact with the second owner. Mr. Steve Eudy owned this car the longest out of the four owners. The car was originally gold. He then painted it orange and then the yellow coat that appears in the above picture. He is also resposible for the installation of the dual exhaust. The third owner, Mr. Shea, installed the four bbl. intake and Holley carb, which I've replaced with a Carter AFB carb.

My restoration started with the complete disassemably of the car. The engine rebuild include being bored out .030, grinding 1 valve, replacing 1 valve, and of course, replacing the Oil pump. I stripped off all three layers of painted and painted it black as seen in the second picture. I've replaced most of the interior including carpet, front seat vinal, rear seat vinal, package tray, dash pad, and gauges. Most of the replacement parts came from YearOne. I replaced the Dixie Horn which was no longer working with a brand new one from JC Whitney Co. I've install an original style reproduction trunk mat and many other things.

The car has been hit twice since I've bought it. Unfortunately both times it was parked in the school parking lot. Luckily we mananged to settle easily with both indivduals responsible. The left front fender was hit in the first incedent and was completely replaced. In the second incedent, the car was hit severly on the left rear quarter and pushed into the car next to me causing severe right rear quarter damage. Luckily there was no structural damage. City Cheverolet Hendrick Collision Center did the repair work, which included patching in new inner and outer quarters on both sides and putting the damaged area in primer. I then painted the car black again. I used a clear coat/ base coat system. This how the car exist today !

My First Trophy

From here on out I intend to detail out the engine compartment keeping its stock apperance. I also have put the original steel rims on the car with the stock deep dish hub caps. Other than that just keep adding the little things and touching up other things.

At the AACA Charlotte AutoFair
With my Grandparents!

As seen in the above picture the deep dish hubcaps are now on the car and I recieved a third place trophy in the Fall AutoFair Car Show at Lowe's Motor Speedway. This was an AACA event and I'm very proud that my car placed third in my class. I will be at the Spring AutoFair in April. I also intend to go to The Dodge Charger Registry Meet this year.

Update: July 23, 2000- I participated in my first AACA National Meet. It was the Special Fall National Meet in Charlotte, NC hosted by the Hornets Nest Region of the AACA at the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I was unable to place in this meet unfortunately. It was a very good learning experience for me. I was disappointed because I put a lot of work into the car for this show, including getting the radiator re-cored by Jack Stone Radiator in Charlotte, NC, who did great work! Also I refaced all of my guages with vinyl decals from Performance Car Graphics, in FL. I got a new trunk mat and rear arm rest bases as well, along with lots of other little things. Now I know some things I need to improve on. I will be showing the car in September at Charlotte Auto Fair September 16, 2000. Also I may do a few more AACA Nationals in the next year!

Another 3rd Place at Spring AutoFair 2000

Update: June 4, 2001 - I haven't really done much lately with the Charger. I plan on doing some more little things to it this summer, but nothing is planned as of yet. I will be doing several shows this year and they are listed below.

June 9-10: The Dodge Charger Registry Meet at Twin Lakes Park, VA
July 21st: The Hornest Nest Region of the AACA Local Car Show at the Campus of UNC-Charlotte.
September 15th: Charlotte AutoFair at Lowes Motor Speedway
October 13th: NC Region Fall Meet at Spencer, NC
November 10th: The Hornest Nest Region of the AACA Local Car Show at Idlewild Country Club, Matthews,NC

Update: July 20, 2001: Here are some pictures from the Dodge Chager meet this past June.

Update: October 27, 2001: I have had two shows since my last update and am pleased to say that I received two 2nd place awards. These two shows were AACA Shows, which I tend to do a little better in. Unfortunately I missed my October show due to some conflicts in my schedule. I do have one more show this year which is another AACA event, and hopefully will maintain my 2nd place status. Unfortunatelly due to time and money issues I have made no signifigant updates or restorations to the car this year, but I hope to next year. Also my show schedule for next year will be tenatively, very light do to work.

Update: September 23, 2001: Here are some pictures from the AACA Meet at UNCC meet this last July '01.
