In the 2004 show, the winner of the HGA award was Betty Carlson's "Morning Glory"

The mission of the Blue Ridge Handweaving Show is to encourage and support both amateur and professional handloom weavers at all levels and to increase public awareness of their work.

The 2004 Blue Ridge Handweaving Showhad two venues: the Asheville show, October 7-29, was held in the John M. Crawford Gallery in the Walker Arts Building at The Asheville School, 360 Asheville School Road, Asheville, NC. Winning entries were then shown from November 1 - December 3 at The Fine Arts Center, 1613 West Washington Street, Greenville, SC.

rules

amateur/professional definitions

Amateurs
engage in handweaving as a pastime or hobby.
Professionals
generate income by marketing their work or teaching handweaving.

Entrants must indicate amateur or professional status on entry form.

categories

There will be amateur and professional divisions in each of the following categories:
  1. Accessories - Scarves, purses, jewelry, etc.
  2. Decorative Functional - Linens, rugs, pillows, afghans, etc.
  3. Decorative Non-Functional - Wall hangings, tapestries, 3-D work, etc.
  4. Wearable - Clothing
  5. Yardage - Minimum 3-yard length plus 14" full-width handling piece. Roll both pieces on a cardboard tube - do not fold. Weaver must be willing to allow the yardage to be hemmed and weighted for display.

judging

The judge, Janet Taylor, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University, is a textile artist who has exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. While teaching at the university level, she chaired the MFA Program in the School of Art at Arizona State. A frequent instructor at Penland School of Crafts, Janet has also served on their Board of Trustees. She is a founding member of the Ariel Gallery in Asheville, NC, and maintains the Janet Taylor Studio in Spruce Pine, NC.

The Asheville School and the Greenville Fine Arts Center will insure work while it is on display. Please note the insurance value of each piece on your entry form, even if it is not for sale.

waiver

All entries will be handled with utmost care. Submission of art work automatically waives any claims for damage or loss against the WNC Fibers/Handweavers Guild. Consent for photographic reproduction for publicity purposes is to be assumed as part of the entry process.

gallery hours - sales

John M. Crawford Gallery hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, October 7-29. Greenville Fine Arts Center hours are 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, November 1 - December 3.The Blue Ridge Handweaving Show will retain a 20% commission on sales.
