Birding Around Denver 5/2

The birding day started out with heavy rain.

Chatfield Reservoir 5/1

It rained throughout the day; temperatures were around 42 degrees.

I observed the Northern Parula 40 feet downstream from the Waterton Canyon Bridge again today.

Another Birder found the Northern Parula at balloon launch area again today.
I missed it during a two hour search as the rain quicken.

I observed a Short-eared Owl at the balloon launch area.

After these sightings, the rain chased me out of the park!

Around Denver 4/30

I started birding an hour before first light. Weather was rainy with high 40's temperatures.

Birding Northern Colorado Again; 4/28

I went searching for the Walden Ponds Little Blue Heron and Latham Reservoir Peregrine Falcons!
No success in either search, but birding is never disappointing!

Cherry Creek Reservoir 4/27

The Cherry Creek Glossy Ibis was across road from 12 mile picnic area from 8:10am to 10:00am.

Much thanks to Bob and Lea Ann Brown for reporting the bird; great find!!!

A trip to Chatfield Reservoir produced little but the Pacific Loon.

Northern Colorado 4/26

I enjoyed great day of birding Monday, highlights follow:

Barr Lake 4/24

I took several friends to Barr Lake to observe the Painted Bunting.
Highlights follow:

Barr Lake 4/22

With temperatures around 35 degrees
Three hours of rain were followed by snow the rest of the day!

First, the Painted Bunting was at the Nature Center Feeders from 9:00am to 11:30am.
It was still there when I left. Many birders observed it, most from Indiana and Ohio!

Birding Colorado Mountains 4/19-4/20

Having just returned from two days of birding in the mountains, here are the highlights of my trip.
April 19
April 20

Barr Lake 4/15

I birded around Barr Lake and DIA today.
Clear skies, cold temperatures (30's) and snowy roads (after 7 inches) were encountered.

Birding Clear Creek County 4/12

I enjoyed a fine day of birding in Clear Creek County.
There was no wind and temperatures were in mid 40's.

Birding Around DIA 4/10

I traveled to Barr Lake Area today; 52 degrees and quite windy!

Northern Colorado 4/5-4/6 and 4/8

4/5
I traveled up to Northern Colorado to check on some bird sightings.
Beautiful weather, no wind and warm!
4/6
4/8
I returned to Pawnee National Grasslands with Jim Collins of California.
Winds 100+ mph, warm temperatures.

Chatfield Reservoir 4/3

After reading Greg Pasquariello's Sage Sparrow message, I traveled to Chatfield Reservoir.
At 4:00pm I parked at Plum Creek Picnic area and walked to south marina.
On the way back, I walked the gravel road that connects Plum Creek Picnic Area road
with the road to Plum Creek Nature Area.

The two Sage Sparrows were on the asphalt of PC Nature Area.
I followed the two sage sparrows south along the closed gravel road.
When last I left them at 5:15pm, they were near the yellow buried cable warning sign,
just west of shooting range (fenced in area).

Thanks much Greg!

Also observed were dozens of Mountain Bluebirds and two Brewer's Blackbirds.

Around Barr Lake 4/2

It snowed most of the day and I was reluctant to wander outside.
At 4:30pm I decided to see if any Burrowing Owls ventured out in this weather.

At Rocky Mountain Arsenal there were many Western Meadowlarks, no owls!
At Barr Lake the Harris's Sparrow was at the nature center feeders.

While no Burrowing Owls appeared at 1.0 miles east of Picadilly and 120th avenue
(two were here on March 28), Near Picadilly and 120th
there was my first Swainson's Hawk of 1999; sitting atop a telephone pole!

I then went east to Trussville Lane and north to 104th avenue.
The whole trip became worthwhile when two Short-eared Owls were observed on three foot poles.
One 6.1 and another 5.8 miles east of the intersection of 104th and Tower Road.

I then crawled home at 40 mph in the ever increasing snow!
