Eastern Plains and Beyond 4/1-3/29

March 28-29
I traveled Monday to Kearney, NE to observe what turned out to be
my second Nebraska Common Crane sighting. (just west and south of Audubon Rowe Sanctuary)
Witnessed by Donna Fortney and Cindy Earnhardt of Colorado and
Ira and Florence Mackenzie of Iowa.
By 12:00pm Tuesday, winds grew to 45-60 mph!

Many Sandhill Cranes, Great-tailed Grackles and
pair of Northern Cardinals highlighted the trip.

Castlewood Canyon State Park 3/16

I spent one of my favorite hours of the day (last hour of light) walking Castlewood Canyon road

I checked up on some winter visitors today around Denver.
Accompanied by 60 degree temperatures and no wind!

Eastern Plains 3/14

Still feeling the effects of a car accident
last Sunday that put me in the hospital for three days last week,
I rode up to Jackson Reservoir with Alan Page and his wife,
but did not get out of the car.

Eastern Plains of Colorado 3/1-3/5

Weather was fantastic all week, no wind and middle 50's to 60's most of the time!

Cherry Creek Reservoir 2/28

Sixty degrees, sunny, and no wind!
Few birds, but fantastic sunset!
Search for Short-eared or Long-eared Owls; without success!

Herring Gull (adult and 1st basic)
California Gull (2 adults)

Around Denver 2/26

Another beautiful winter day in Colorado!

Wheat Ridge Greenbelt 2/25

What a beautiful day! With sixty degrees, sunny and no wind,
I hiked from Prospect Park to Johnson Park and back (six miles, 5 hours).

Clear Creek County Birding 2/24

I ventured up to Clear Creek for some mountain birding today!
Overcast weather, temperatures in the 30's, and just a little wind.

Birding Douglas County 2/23

Today was one of those many Colorado fantastic winter days.
Temperatures 40 to 60 degrees and not a hint of wind!
It was quite a pleasure to bird today!

Birding Estes Park

Birding travels lead me to Estes Park by way of Boulder county today. Highlights follow:

Douglas County 2/19

I visited Douglas County today.
There was much wind, 40 degree temperatures.

More Boulder County 2/17

It was quite overcast today with temperatures around 52 degrees.
Fortunately, the predicted wind never materialized!

Boulder County 2/15

It was a cloudy day, 40 degree temperatures, and no wind.

Eastern Plains 2/11-2/12

Cold temperatures, but no wind produced some pleasant birding
on the eastern plains of Colorado the last two days.
February 12
February 12

Denver Plains 2/10

I Online Skated around Aurora Reservoir today.
Temperatures around 48 degrees and winds 45-55 mph.

Not many birds, but I observed and confirmed two Swamp Sparrow sightings
that I first saw on 2/7 for a short period of time.
They were on the south end of reservoir, in cattails near only cottonwoods!
On 2/7 I searched for Short-eared Owls (without success) for several hours
close to dusk.

No Gulls, 12 Common Goldeneye, 1 Ring-necked Duck, and 21 Canadas
were just about the only other birds observed.

More Denver Birding 2/9

No wind and 60 degree temperatures for this winter day!

Birding Denver 2/8

Clear skies and much wind today produced few sightings!

Around Denver 2/5

Another beautiful winter day in Denver; no wind!

Larimer County 2/1

I enjoyed a great birding day up in Larimer County Monday.
While it was 27 degrees at 7:00am, there was little wind (except for Hamilton Reservoir).

7:00am
Duck Lake; there were two sub-adult and an adult Bald Eagle on the lake. No gulls at all!

7:20am
Prospect Ponds; at pond number two, there were four Greater White-fronted Geese.

7:30am
Edora Park; many American Wigeon, but no Eurasian Wigeon.

8:00am
Long Pond and Terry Lake; no birds at all!
I searched surrounding neighborhoods for Bohemian Waxwings; without success.

9:10am
Duck Lake; there were three Glaucous Gulls (adult, lst basic, 2nd basic).
The Eagles harassed them constantly, and adult and lst basic flew
north to Fossil Creek Lake at 9:20am.
By 9:40am the 2nd basic had enough and flew that way.
An adult and lst basic Herring Gulls seemed not bothered by the eagles.

10:15am
Warren Lake; There were many gulls including an adult and lst basic Thayer's Gull.
The 2nd basic could have been there also, but was too far away for me to identify.

11:00am
One more stop at Edora Park did not produce a sighting of the Eurasian Wigeon.
However, at the Stuart Street entrance I was met by 200+ Bohemian Waxwings.
They flew to subdivision to the south.

11:45am
Douglas Reservoir; not much, a few Herring Gulls

12:30pm
Hamilton Reservoir; The Red-necked Grebe in winter plumage was there
with many Horned and Western Grebes.
I could not pick out a Clark's Grebe.

On the way home, I passed South Platte River at the 88th parking area:
Barrow's Goldeneye (male, 50 yards south of green/white water tower)
Barrow's Goldeneye (female, 40 yards north of 78th parking area)
This is the first time in six trips that I did not
see her accompanied by her two male Barrow's escorts.
Greater Scaup (male and female; they were ¼ mile north of the 88th avenue bridge.
They stayed close to bank where large finger of land with brown grass
juts out into South Platte River.
