I traveled Monday to Kearney, NE to observe what turned out to be
my second Nebraska Common Crane sighting. (just west and south of Audubon Rowe Sanctuary)
Witnessed by Donna Fortney and Cindy Earnhardt of Colorado and
Ira and Florence Mackenzie of Iowa.
By 12:00pm Tuesday, winds grew to 45-60 mph!
Many Sandhill Cranes, Great-tailed Grackles and
pair of Northern Cardinals highlighted the trip.

The last days of winter turned out to be good ones. Highlights follow:
Friday 19
Fifty degree temperatures and no wind at all on the eastern plains.
- Logan CR 46 and CR 89
I walked back (5:30 am to 7:00am) to dirt road that splits corn fields in half.
Then I hiked 1 mile north to last cultivated field.
The male was booming in tall yellow grass just to the west.
The female was at the windmill back at CR 46 and CR 89.

Still feeling the effects of a car accident

Wheat Ridge Greenbelt 2/25
What a beautiful day! With sixty degrees, sunny and no wind,
I hiked from Prospect Park to Johnson Park and back (six miles, 5 hours).
- Wheat Ridge Greenbelt (Prospect Park)
Greater Scaup (male, continues at Prospect Pond)
Red-breasted Merganser (2 males, 2 females)
Northern Cardinal (female, across footbridge east; from Bob Spencer's Owl tree
(by yellow post)to footbridge to the east; thickets on north side of trail to Clear Creek)
Inspired by the female Cardinal sighting I decided to walk the three miles to Johnson Park
(previous sightings of 2 males and female in one day along this hike).
There were no further Cardinal sightings,
but a Sharp-shinned Hawk was standing guard about ½ mile west of Johnson Park.
A male and female Wood Duck were along creek at Anderson Park.
One of my favorite spots along this hike is 0.6 miles west of Johnson Park.
At the orange-mesh guard rail last year I had two March, Field Sparrow sightings
and a May, Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
The Eastern Screech-Owl did not make an appearance while I was there today.
Clear Creek County Birding 2/24
I ventured up to Clear Creek for some mountain birding today!
Overcast weather, temperatures in the 30's, and just a little wind.

Rosy Finches (all three species) north of 2nd and Rose Avenue

I search two hours around summit for White-tailed Ptarmigan
My sixth search of 1999 was not successful.

I stopped on the way back to Georgetown to look for
Three-toed Woodpeckers. No success today, but they have been
spotted here in the past.
- Echo Lake
Attempt to relocate the Three-toed Woodpecker found around lake
on January 23. No success, but a beautiful view of Mt Evans
makes the hike worthwhile!

It was quite overcast today with temperatures around 52 degrees.
Fortunately, the predicted wind never materialized!

I hiked around Meadow Park and Lyons for three hours
Searching for Yellow-bellied Sapsucker that was reported 2/15
No success; few birds, but an adult Golden Eagle soared overhead
For 10 minutes or so.

A stop at Viele Lake in southern Boulder did not produce a Trumpeter Swan sighting.
I then drove 0.7 miles south to South Boulder Creek trail (Marshall Road and highway 93).
There was one immature Trumpeter Swan here.
If you look at the recent photos, the immature Trumpeter was the smaller
one with the more brown head (observed on 2/15).

It was a cloudy day, 40 degree temperatures, and no wind.

Not much; I was still searching for Short-eared Owls found in past years; without success.
Denver Plains 2/10
I Online Skated around Aurora Reservoir today.
Temperatures around 48 degrees and winds 45-55 mph.
Not many birds, but I observed and confirmed two Swamp Sparrow sightings
that I first saw on 2/7 for a short period of time.
They were on the south end of reservoir, in cattails near only cottonwoods!
On 2/7 I searched for Short-eared Owls (without success) for several hours
close to dusk.
No Gulls, 12 Common Goldeneye, 1 Ring-necked Duck, and 21 Canadas
were just about the only other birds observed.

I enjoyed a great birding day up in Larimer County Monday.
While it was 27 degrees at 7:00am, there was little wind (except for Hamilton Reservoir).

Edora Park; many American Wigeon, but no Eurasian Wigeon.
8:00am
Long Pond and Terry Lake; no birds at all!
I searched surrounding neighborhoods for Bohemian Waxwings; without success.
9:10am
Duck Lake; there were three Glaucous Gulls (adult, lst basic, 2nd basic).
The Eagles harassed them constantly, and adult and lst basic flew
north to Fossil Creek Lake at 9:20am.
By 9:40am the 2nd basic had enough and flew that way.
An adult and lst basic Herring Gulls seemed not bothered by the eagles.
10:15am
Warren Lake; There were many gulls including an adult and lst basic Thayer's Gull.
The 2nd basic could have been there also, but was too far away for me to identify.
11:00am
One more stop at Edora Park did not produce a sighting of the Eurasian Wigeon.
However, at the Stuart Street entrance I was met by 200+ Bohemian Waxwings.
They flew to subdivision to the south.
11:45am
Douglas Reservoir; not much, a few Herring Gulls
12:30pm
Hamilton Reservoir; The Red-necked Grebe in winter plumage was there
with many Horned and Western Grebes.
I could not pick out a Clark's Grebe.
On the way home, I passed South Platte River at the 88th parking area:
Barrow's Goldeneye (male, 50 yards south of green/white water tower)
Barrow's Goldeneye (female, 40 yards north of 78th parking area)
This is the first time in six trips that I did not
see her accompanied by her two male Barrow's escorts.
Greater Scaup (male and female; they were ¼ mile north of the 88th avenue bridge.
They stayed close to bank where large finger of land with brown grass
juts out into South Platte River.
