Greater Prairie-Chicken
GRPC are difficult to find when not on their lek.
Some long shot possibilities are:
- Sedgwick County Roads 46 & 89
Several times I have observed them from this intersection.
Especially check around the windmill.
A local Ranger suggests driving CR 89 after a dusting of snow
as GRPC will mix in with Ring-necked Pheasants in cornfields.
If none around, walk the dirt road in the field to the North.
There is a lek & possible birds about 1.0 mile North.
- In Wray County, Drive CR 45 Loop
Driving CR 45 at first or last light has produced several sightings
in past years. Especially check around the windmill about 1.0 miles
East of Highway 385. Private property; Please Do Not Leave the Road.
- In Wray County
Best opportunity to see GRPC is to join the Wray Museum
Greater Prairie-Chicken Tours (See Grouse Link on Homepage).
Tours starting filling up quickly after February 1st.
