Inverse Potential (1/r)

Explaining the inverse square law was one of the physical properties of nature that I wanted to understand. There were geometrical answers but were unsatisfying, a paint can spraying will thin out the paint concentration as 1/r2. The force at a distance argument works well, if one imagines that force is a stream of particles traveling out. But this requires absolute space and time. It is much easier to understand that a force is a result of local space curvature only. The difficulty arises then in why does space curve. What makes up dimension and distance in the first place? Use of quantum theory to explain space curvature and Lorentz contraction is aesthetically pleasing. Distance is fundamental in nature in only how it relates to momentum.
