PROVIDENCE, RI
Providence, Rhode Island, is famous for being one of the most photographed cities in the United States.  It's undoubtably a photogenic city.  The interesting thing about it visually is how half of it does seem "quaint," a step back into the 18th century, while the other half tries very hard, especially under our current mayor, Buddy Cianci, to project an ultra-modern image.  Right now (1999), the downtown mall project is going full steam, causing traffic headaches for all who work in or around the city, but promising a bright future of convenience shopping bliss.

Look closely. This is not a black & white photo. It's color. Color. This is Providence's downtown, near Fed Hill and the Kennedy bus terminal.

Most of Brown on the East Side where I've been living while going to graduate school in American literature sits atop a hill--hence, the name, College hill.

Speaking of Brown, here's a picture of the green inside the main gate.

Brown University's Faunce Hall. The steps are used even in the dead of winter as a gathering place for students. That's because the interior, even after a recent remodeling project, still utilizes the High Modern 60s Institutionalism style.

Thayer Street. Restaurants, cafes, small student-targeted shops for books, mags, records, and the like. While there are about 4 different music stores on this street, not one of them carries a Marc Almond selection worth spitting at.
