Barbara Mills -- Accounting
Professional
_________________________________________________________________________________________
I have worked in accounting and finance for
approximately 30 years not counting the work I did when in college and helping
out friends with their bookkeeping and taxes.
In that time, I have held positions in “old
line” manufacturing, retail, construction, software development and computer
hardware manufacturing. My jobs include working in accounts payable, accounts
receivable, collections, general ledger, budgeting, cost accounting, treasury
and public accounting.
It is difficult to state how many years I have
worked in any particular area of accounting since most of my positions included
more than one function or involved the supervision of the accounting/finance
department.
However, I have worked at least 9 years in
construction including four years at Rainbow Carpets in Watsonville that had a
floor covering installation company as well as a retail carpeting sales
company. I was controller at Rainbow Carpets, and as such, I supervised the
payroll, materials ordering, inventory and costing as well as the other more
general functions.
Other construction firms I have worked for
include large firms such as Johnson & Mapes and Rudolph & Sletten as
well as smaller construction and remodeling firms. I have at least 4 years of
construction costing and several years in construction payroll including union
payrolls as well as the usual general ledger, payables and receivables.
My job costing experience in addition to the
above includes probably 4 years of manufacturing and service costing. I have
also worked in real estate management for probably two (2) years.
I accepted a permanent position at Adaptec
because I felt that it was one of the best companies I had worked for on a
temporary basis; they offered me a position, which was exciting and
challenging. I left Adaptec because a new manager was hired with whom I had
difficulty communicating -- literally. English was not her native language, and
she frequently misunderstood what I said. I also found her instructions to me
to be confusing at times. This is not a problem I had ever encountered before,
but it made doing my job difficult.
