In what could be considered the "roomiest" corner of the layout, I plan on installing a scratchbuilt freight house next to the interchange track.  Initially, I had a code 40 spur curve around next to the interchange track.  Eventually, I changed my mind about that, removed the spur (you can see the remnants of the roadbed in the picture to the right), and added a straight track along the edge instead.

Like the other buildings that I plan on scratchbuilding, I put together a very simple mockup out of cardboard to make sure that the size and shape that I have in mind is what I want.

Once I was satisfied with the shape and size of the mockup, I applied cinder ballast to the tracks, added ground foam, and a gravel drive.  I adjusted my technique for applying the blended turf, to give the area around the freight house the look of grass that is mown on a regular basis.  I stayed with the blended turf color instead of going with a consistent green, which would have looked more like a manicured lawn, which would have been more appropriate for a nice home instead.

Once the freight house is actually built, I will landscape the area with a couple of small trees, and a few bushes in appropriate places.
