Held at the Oliwa Cathedral in Gdansk, John Surface's wedding to Anna Czabaj was a beautiful event. The weather was perfect, and the happy couple was surrounded by the love and good wishes of family, friends, colleagues and students.

The reception was held at the Derby Restaurant on Polna Street, in Sopot.  The dinner included several delicious courses (and vegetarian, for me), and there was dancing and conversation well into the night.

(Left) It is customary for the guests to throw small coins, rather than rice, when the bride and groom leave the church.  In turn, the bride and groom collect the coins, and save them for good luck.

(Left) At the reception, my father, Bruce, made fast friends with an amiable and inquisitive priest from the Oliwa Cathedral.

We sat with two of Anna's English students (twin girls) and their parents; they were all very excited because the girls will be travelling to the U.S. to study at Harvard University during the summer.

Unfortunately, one of the cameras that Bruce and I were using to take pictures of the wedding had no film in it (we later discovered).  And so, though not pictured, Bruce and I would like to sincerely thank Anna's family--Mr. and Mrs. Adam and Renata Czabaj, and older brother, Piotr--for their hospitality, generosity, and friendship.  Also, regretfully not pictured are John Surface's mother, Gail, brother, Kevin, and grandmother.

Finally, Bruce and I would like to thank John and Anna for inviting us to share such a joyful occasion with them.  John and I have been friends since we me at Marlboro College in Vermont, in 1986. In the fourteen years that we've know each other, I've never seen him happier.

Powodzenia, John i Anna Surface!  Dziekuje za zaprszenie. Bylo wspaniale!
