To see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour. William Blake
What is Sand?
Background: Sand is a term that describes a particle size that can range from very coarse (3mm) to very fine (0.125mm). Sand can be found in a variety of environments; accumulated at different locations along river, ocean coastlines and lakeshores, and in deserts. However, not all sand is the same. To the earth scientist studying a sand sample, the composition of the partent rock, the types of weathering, and the length of transportation can all be revealed.
Though many dictionaries define sand as consisting of rock and mineral matter only, they omit many of its other intriguing aspects. Shells, corals and fossilized plant and animal materials are often found within a single small sample of sand.

“A handful of sand is an anthology of the universe.”
“Stones are primoridial matter. Sand is matter ground by the infinity of time. It makes one mindful of eternity. Sand is matter, which has been transformed and has almost become liquid and spiritual.”
Unknown Author
“Sand — Hold it in your hands and you’re in touch with the planet’s essence.”
The Thin Edge
Anne W. Simon
“Sand is a substance that is beautiful, mysterious, and infinitely variable. Each grain on the beach is the result of processes that go back into the shadowy beginnings of life, or the earth itself.”
The Edge of the Sea
Rachel Carson
"In every grain of sand there is a story of the earth."
Rachel Carson, American biologist and writer

The Minnesota Surficial Geology Collection has a companion Earth Science extension activity suitable for grades 5-12. The Minnesota Sand Module comes with six different 12000-count sand samples and a 12-piece parent rock specimen collection. All sand samples are washed and sieved to 1-2mm; large enough for naked-eye sorting yet small enough to explore with a 10X hand loupe. One sample is a “Mystery Sand”. Its purpose is to engage the student in discovery.
A written lesson plan with extensions as well as suggestions for additional resource materials is provided at no charge. The Minnesota Sand Module is modestly priced at $50, which includes shipping and tax. Order Form
