This collection is useful to non-professionals who simply wish to learn more about the geology of the county. It is not intended to be a one-stop, comprehensive collection. It is useful to anyone with an interest in earth science or the county.
Pine County, Minnesota is located on the northwestern margin of the St. Croix horst, and contains bedrock that formed during three geologic periods: the Archean (2550 ma), the Proterozoic (2100-1100 ma), and the Paleozoic (510-450 ma). Roadcuts, rivers and abandoned railroad lines bisect many bedrock outcrops. In the Denham area, the abandoned Soo Rail Line is now a recreational trail providing the general public with access to several outcrops.
The county also displays a variety of glacial landforms, effects of the Superior and Grantsburg lobes. A tremendous tunnel valley extends the entire length of the county. For additional Minnesota glacial information, refer to the Minnesota Surficial Geology Collection.

Pine County, Minnesota Bedrock Collection
|
Bedrock in Pine County is mostly covered by glacial sediment that varies in thickness from a few feet to more than 300 feet. The thickest glacial sediment in the county is in the central part of the northern border of the county, along the southern boundary of the county, and where channels were cut into bedrock prior to deposition of the glacial sediment. The thinnest glacial cover is found in a broad northeast-to-southwest band across the center of the county and in areas where present-day rivers and streams have cut into the glacial materials. The most extensive bedrock exposures are along the Kettle River about five miles north and south of Sandstone. Another significant concentration of bedrock outcrops is in the area of Denham in the northwestern part of the county. Most other exposures of bedrock in Pine County are small and widely scattered.
