UPDATED DIRECTIONS:

of Colorado Atlas) and Main Street on the south side of Walsenburg

on the left. Zero your trip meter and then drive ~10.5 miles
(r) south on 330 Rd. The site is on the left (east) side of the
road and is an obvious patch of tallish Ponderosa Pines (most of the
habitat on the way south is Piņon-Juniper). I stopped, I believe,
at an orange fiber optic cable post on the right side of the road.
If you go past the spot, in 0.2 miles you will pass a sign for
the Schultz Wildlife Management Area and at 0.4 miles you will
hit a Y-intersection, with the left fork being 310

One owl Kingery spotted along the Colorado 67, 14.8 miles west of

from Sedalia) and take the left fork (Sugar Creek Road). Continue 1.4
miles to an S turn; also 0.4 mile west of the Cook's white mailbox (on
the left; 1002 Colo 67). This one had a normal tail, but at sundown our
silhouetted views didn't show much in the way of field marks. It flew
around just below a logged-over area in a patch outlined by an S curve.
Another Pygmy Owl was seen essentially at the site of Two Forks
Dam--across from the South Platte Hotel where the North Fork of
the South Platte joins the South Fork. This one seemed a bit short
of tail and a bit subdued in back-of-the-head eye spots. And tiny.
A bi-county bird, it flew across the river from Douglas to Jefferson.
Habitat: cottonwoods along the river.

together after about 1/2 mile as the canyon closes in a bit. Maybe
another 1/2 mile up, after you go past a clump of trees dominated by
an old cottonwood with lots of dead snags, there is a trail to the south
across the creek and up the bank fairly high on the west side of the
canyon going south. There are only deer trails the rest of the way through
open scrub along the hillside until you get to the copse. It usually takes
me about 1 1/2 hours to get there, but that's because the birding is pretty
good all along the way. At a purposeful pace, you could do it in 30 minutes.
