Ranch At Roaring Fork

Ranch at Roaring Fork is a residential development east of Carbondale.
The location is approx. one mile west of CR100 (Catherine Store Rd.).
The development borders several old gravel ponds that have a great
variety of winter ducks including Barrow’s Goldeneyes on occasion.
The area north of the ponds is a big riparian area that we Roaring Fork
birders visit for the Christmas count and a few other occasions.
Birders are allowed but have been warned by the property management
folks on several visits to mind our manners. Apparently the homeowners
really value their privacy. If you visit this site please be a birding ambassador.

a car ot two on the side of the road). Go down the stairs
and follow the trail until you come up to two large junipers
on the east side of the trail. At this point, go west to
the line of thickets. "

Feb. 16th, 2001, about 2:00 p.m. a N. Pygmy Owl was on the branch of a cottonwood tree
along the creek which flows south past Red Rocks park and into Bear Creek in
Morrison. The spot was about 1/2 mile north of Morrison and just off the road.

On Feb 18th-21st, N. Pygmy Owl was 0.8 miles North of Morrison, just East
of Red Rocks Park and along same creek (which runs along highway 26).
(This is 0.3 miles south of southern entrance to Red Rocks Park)

Look for small brown open space sign on east side of road. Two tall
fir trees stand just east (uphill) from sign. As you look on west side
of road (downhill) the creek runs toward you. The creek forks here.
Look for four trees just west of west fork. The NOPO flew into
hole on the third tree from the right. Go up this tree (thickest of four),
after it forks, look for hole on left fork about 12 feet upwards from the fork.
