There are two reservoirs, although the newer one does not show up
on the DeLorme map). They are in Mesa County and are a lock for
Barrow's Goldeneye and Hooded Merganser between Thanksgiving and
New Year's Day. Might freeze up after that, but most years it has
some open water through the winter--usually near the inlet of the
older reservoir, which is the western one. Also, the trees south
of Plateau creek between the first two bridges over Plateau Creek
on 330 are a nice winter Bald Eagle roost.

To Search for Black Skimmer:
Old news, I am keeping directions for future birds. Private Property now.
Turn west on Kiowa County Road 41.2 and proceed west one-half mile
to a cattle guard. Park on the side of the County Road. Do not drive in
on the two track road. Instead, walk north on the west side of the fence
toward the lake, a distance of about a third of a mile.
The bird was first seen on a tiny mud spit just east of the fence line.
After about an hour, it flew out to the obvious point just to the north,
which has a fence extending west out in to the water on it. The skimmer
roosts with gulls and large shorebirds. It's black back and crown,
white lower face and belly, and heavy red bill with a black distal half
should make it unmistakable.
The landowner is graciously allowing access to this bird on property
normally off-limits to exploration. Please follow his simple request,
and walk in from the main road. Good luck.
