Directions to Grace's Warbler 6/27/2004 (Mark Peterson):
"From Wetmore go South on HWY 96 towards Westcliffe and
then take the Greenwood exit or RD 398. Follow this road until
you see a FR (forest road) that goes to the East and take this.
I apologize I do not have a number for it but if you get onto
398 at the North end do not take the first road that goes East
with a bridge continue past that until I believe the next and
only other non-private drive that goes East. Follow this road
to the end where it runs into a Ranch. You can either park in
an area that is about a 100 yards before the Ranch or I believe
you can turn right at the Ranch entrance and follow this little
road back into the trail head. I just parked out on the main road.
If you park where I did then head South and go through a small
wash and you will come to the other road. Follow this road to
the South until you come to the trail head which is kind of
hidden amongst some bushes. The trail is basically overgrown so!
if you plan to explore this area I would bring a GPS as you
could easily get lost here once you get over the ridge.
From the trail head make you way East over the small ridge
and then you will come down into another valley and this is
where I had the bird. Good luck."

airport (at the sign for Hartman Rocks Recreation Area).

the road re-crosses onto public land and changes from
pavement to dirt. There is a gate/cattle guard.
Pull out and park past the gate.

Barr Lake has a dirt, non-vehicle road around it. Circular hike is nine miles.
I have hiked around it many times, but finally decided that the most
successful birding is from mile marker 0.5 to 7.8.
The nature center is at 0.0 (9.0)
There is a banding station at mm 8.5
Boardwalk to Gazebo and Eagle watch at mm 1.5
Many of the migrating birds in the last few years were found between mm 8.0 and 9.0
Access Southwest Corner of Barr Lake
From Interstate 76, take 136th Avenue Exit (Exit 20).
Go West on first road south (Buckley Road).
Road goes back over Interstate 76.
Take Buckley Road South to 128th Avenue and East to end of the road.
To Search for Possible White-eyed Vireo 4/22:
Kingery "If you want to try for this elusive bird, here are directions.
We parked at the southwest park "entrance." This is on a dead-end road
(126th, I think) east (right) off Buckley Road, one-half to one mile north
of 120th. Or, from I76, exit at 136th Ave., go west for a half-mile,
then south on Buckley Road. Buckley swings over I76 and shortly after
it drops down on the south side, this dead-end road goes east (left).
A rough path leads to the ditch road around the lake. Go north on the
ditch road to the white pipe that points at the 2002 Bald Eagle nest
(something else occupies the nest now). The vireo was about 100 yards
north of the pipe, along a ditch that comes in from the west."

Travel North 0.8 miles to Mack.
Turn West (Left) on Highway 50/6 and drive 2.6 miles to CR 8
Drive North 2.8 miles on CR 8 and turn West (Left) on S Road.
After 3.0 miles on S Road it turns Northwest into 4 Road.
Follow 4 Road (Baxter Pass Road) and pass U Road in 3.2 miles.
From Intersection of Baxter Pass Road & U Road
go 4.2 miles and stay left on a dirt road going west.
Travel 1.8 miles and stay left at a fork.
Drive another 0.4 miles where Scott's Orioles were seen.
Returning to Baxter Pass Road & CR U.
Take CR U 1.5 miles northwest to ascend Brewster Ridge.
(Scott's Orioles are usually found at several locations along route).
Pass Cattle guard in 1.8 miles to junction with CR 2.
You can either continue North on CR U or turn left on CR 2.
Continuing on CR 2, you come to road on the left in 3.6 miles.
Continue on CR 2 to junction with CR 1.8 in 1.0 miles.
Turn Left and travel 1.1 miles back to paved CR M.8.
Turn West (Right) and drive 2.0 miles to dirt road CR 0.8.
You want to return to I70 by making left turn on CR 0.8.
Best Scott's Oriole location in state is along CR M.8
0.4 miles West of CR 0.8.
Scott's Orioles are usually observed at Juniper Stand 0.6 miles
South of M.8 & 0.8. Park and hike 0.2 miles east to draw.

From the National Center for Atmospheric Research parking area
(Take Boulder Turnpike, Hwy 36 to Table Mesa Road,
Drive West on Table Mesa Road to west end & parking area).
Pick up trail from the west end of parking area and hike west.
Follow the trail due west from the NCAR area, past a water tank to a junction,
approximately 1/2 mile. Go south (left) and follow the wide trail down into
the Bear Creek drainage, crossing the creek and gradually climbing to
another junction just over another 1/2 mile. At this junction, you must
choose which way you want to execute the loop described here.
From the junction, go right if you want to hike up Bear Creek Canyon.
Your route begins on a trail of brightly colored red dirt. The trail
rounds a corner and contours west across a steep slope on the south
wall of the canyon before proceeding up stream. Plan on getting wet,
as the trail and stream tend to be one and the same. At the west end
of the creek draw, you'll climb out of the canyon and head back
southeast along the northwest ridge to the summit. Your return from
the summit means dropping down the steep east face of Bear Peak via
Fern Canyon (Class 2). The trail leads you down the northeast ridge
and into the Fern Canyon draw. Once back at the main trail,
retrace your route back to NCAR.

Allan Burns: "along Mesa Creek, just west of where it crosses the Palmer
Mesa Bike Trail, which runs parallel with (and just west of) I-25.
This is very close to where Caramillo St. dead ends (at least west
of I-25...it continues on the other side) and not far from the main
parking lot of Sondermann Park. The bird was moving and calling actively.
We did not re-find it when we rode back from Sondermann. It could have
moved down to Monument Creek or up into Sondermann itself
(Mesa Creek runs through Sondermann)."

track. Take overpass across I25 (east) and follow road to the right (Hanover),
across RR tracks. Continue left, you will go across a creek (train bridge on
left). When you cross the creek continue straight (north) on Old Pueblo Road.
Follow Old Pueblo back across RR tracks, look for sign on right for Birdsall
Road. Make a right on Birdsall and follow about a mile to pond. I think it
is after second hill. Be sure to look at Chollo Cactus in fields for birds
while you are approaching pond you should see Thrashers (and others).
Drive slow over the hill approaching the pond, you won't see the pond
right away (tall cattails) but you will see it as you approach closer to it.

The nest site is on the Colorado River one mile above the Mesa County line
on the south side of the river. The nest is in a concrete structure made
for the Bluestone Canal. The drain back structure has 6 nests (new and
old phoebe's nests) on both sides of the concrete drain. The site is on
private land but can be seen from the river or from the north side looking
across to the south side. The site is about 1 mile below the diversion
for the Bluestone ditch.
A scope is very useful because the distance to the site is a little
further from the north side than one might expect because the river
curves, widens and has a small gravel island at the site.
Access to the site is off the I-70 Frontage road between DeBeque and
Parachute and is most easily found by going 2.2 miles west of the
Una Bridge Road intersection, then heading for the Colorado river.
The concrete structure which Coen described is the only concrete
structure in the area on the south side of the river and is
difficult to miss.

"Finding Sprague's Pipits in western KS is so easy that there would have
to be quite a few in eastern Colorado. Timing is everything. Here the
migration peak is between 9/25 and 10/25 every year. These birds usually
come down with early cool fronts and will hang around until all the insects
are dead or it happens to snow. They REALLY hate cold weather so after a
super hard frost or even the smallest amount of snow, it's usually pointless
to even look for them.
"I think the majority of Sprague's are probably in grassland and one could
probably come up with lots of new sightings fairly quickly provided one
could walk or even drive through the pastures they might inhabit. But they
also use wheat fields, alfalfa fields, etc. On really big migration days I
see lots of them just standing in or alongside dirt roads in farm country.
I am very familiar with this bird. I've always wanted to set aside a
weekend and try to run up big numbers of them in eastern Colorado; I'm
pretty confident I could find 10 to 50 per day with a little effort. I
usually hear them before seeing them; those call notes are very distinctive."

Travel south into neighborhood. At fork (circle) turn right (west) on Sunset.
Bowmar Drive is 0.5 miles south and west of Quincy and Sheridan Blvd.
Turn Right from Sunset onto Bowmar Drive to 4400 and Tina Jones house.
marston Reservoir can be observed just left of Sunset and Bowmar Drive.
My yard is open for viewing hummingbirds & songbirds, 8/3-10/30.
I'm asking the following :
1.] Please call ahead of time and mention what day, and time of day
you will be coming. There is no need to wait for a reply.
Call my cell phone. 303-906-5479 [voicemail].
2.] When you get to the house, please walk up the driveway and enter the patio,
which is to the right of the garage. Walk into the patio and SIGN the guest register.
3.] Please WRITE what you saw next to your name, so that others may benefit
from your sightings.[such as what hummers, and anything different].
4.] There are 2 chairs in the front driveway on the north side. Please do
not walk back & forth in the driveway for it disturbs the birds and ruins it
for others.
5.] There is one chair in the patio which you can sit in,but because it is
a small area, leave the chair where you find it, and do not walk around in
this area,[because of possible disturbance to the hummingbirds].
There are 2 feeders in the back yard and you will find one feeder in
the front yard. The front yard feeder is hanging near the front door.
6.] There are 2 chairs in the back yard. Exit the patio to the right to find
the chairs. Please do not walk around the back yard. Please stay in the
chairs[because of possible disturbance to the hummingbirds]
7.] On Aug. 4th, in the morning, there will be a class at my house.
If folks could not visit on this morning only, I'd appreciate it
Because I have alot of plantings many of the birds feed on the flowers only
and may never go to a feeder, so watch the plantings. This was my intent to
create a habitat where the birds could find enough nectar.
I appreciate folks consideration in sitting quietly and not walking around,
and I especially appreciate individuals signing the register. Sorry for
sounding so strict.

The Box Canyon Falls & Park is located in the southwest corner of Ouray,
reachable either on foot or by car. This dramatic waterfall is the
culmination of Canyon Creek narrowing and spilling thousands of
gallons a minute of water over and through a spectacular, boxed
geological formation formed over hundreds of years.
The Park is located at the west end of Third Avenue. To reach the
entrance to the falls by foot, walk two blocks up the left fork at
the end of Third Avenue. At the top of the hill, you will find the
entrance to the Park and the new Visitor Center. To drive from town,
follow Hwy 550 south of Ouray, taking an immediate right onto CR 361
after the first hairpin turn. Follow the signs to the right, going
over the Uncompahgre Gorge to the drive-in entrance.

From Telluride, follow signs along paved Bridal Veil Falls Road.
The surrounding hills have a number of spoil heaps and unsealed
old mine tunnels, though exploring these is not recommended. From
the edge of the basin, another 90 minutes hiking either along the
jeep trail or in a straight line across the valley and up some
cliffs on the south side leads to the highest point on the road,
a ridge at 12,850 feet, which has quite spectacular views eastwards
over the brightly colored volcanic peaks of the Red Mountain
district and countless more distant summits.
The ridge is an obvious point to turn around, but an alternative
way back is to first climb to the summit just to the southwest,
an unnamed peak at 13,477 feet - even better views from here -
then climb down the steep slope on the far side and into the adjacent
valley (Mud Lake Basin), upper end of which does indeed contain
a shallow, muddy lake. A stream flows from here and tumbles down
a rocky hillside forming a number of pretty waterfalls and cascades.
Further down it joins with Bridal Veil Creek, and the jeep trail
is reached again after another 2 miles walking down the canyon.
The round trip takes about 5 hours.

The hike begins at 9,000 feet, at the end of the paved section of
Bridal Veil Falls Road, 2 miles east of Telluride and just after
the road passes through the still active Pandora Mine. 4WD
vehicles may be driven 2 miles further to the top of the waterfall,
then beyond is the one-way section. For those on foot
it takes about 30 minutes walking up the wooded hillside to
reach the base of the falls then another 20 minutes to the top.
A restored but privately-owned pumping station sits beside the
stream on the cliff edge though there is a path beside it,
following Bridal Veil Creek. The jeep track switchbacks sharply up
the head of the main valley and offers increasingly good views
over Telluride far below. It crosses a fast-flowing stream (Ingram
Creek) then winds round the side of a steep, exposed cliff face,
quite a treacherous section even for 4WD vehicles (Black Bear
Pass), and then, now at an elevation of 11,200 feet, leads into
Ingram Basin - a wide, quite flat valley carpeted by moss,
heather, and long grass mixed with wildflowers in spring.

From Interstate 70, take Highway 40, Exit 233.
Travel North on Highway 40, past the town of Empire.
On Highway 40 past the town of empire there are brown Park
Service signs that indicate a turnoff for the Henderson mine.
At the first major switchback on highway 40 take the road to
Henderson mine. Stay on this road until it ends at the mine
entrance and turn off to the right where there is a parking lot.
This is the trailhead. Follow the trail west until it splits,
the NW portion going to Jones Pass and the SW portion going to
Butler Gulch. There will be signs indicating the trails.
To Search for Three-toed Woodpecker of 8/1/2004:
Elliott: "I saw the three-toed after I had crossed two streams
where the trail began to get really steep. The tree that I saw
it in was right off the trail and had almost 6 inches of bark at
the bottom of it because it had been worked on so much. I found
the bird by listening for drumming as the growth is really
thick in this portion of the trail."
