Fee Event: Requires $83 donation.
The center is offering a 3 hour session with 5 different birds,
all placed in a natural habitat (on branches, stumps, in burrows
or tree-holes etc) for natural-looking photos. We can photograph
some of the birds feeding. There are no restrictions or royalties for photos.
The event would raise $1000 and would as such require an $83 donation
from each photographer. This is a greatly discounted rate compared to
booking a session as an individual. The list of birds from which we can
pick our 5 include a golden eagle, bald eagle, ferruginous hawk, merlin,
barn owl, burrowing owl, Eastern screech owl, great horned owl, kestrel,
Swainson's hawk, red tail hawk, and turkey vulture.
All of these birds are permenantly disabled and most have some kind of
blemish, such as a bad eye or sometimes a broken leg or wing, but the
Center only uses their most photogenic birds for these kinds of shoots,
so the imperfections are usually minor. They are all still beautiful
and most look "perfect" from one side or the other!

All DFO members are encouraged to participate in the annual Denver Christmas Bird Count (CBC)
sponsored by the Denver Field Ornithologists and the National Audubon Society. To participate,
call one of the Area Leaders listed below to assist in a particular area, or call the Count
Leader if you would like to help in an area that still needs additional observers. As can
be seen on the list, there are still several areas that do not have leaders and will not be
covered unless volunteers are found to help out. If you would be willing to lead in one of
these areas, please call the Count Leader as soon as possible. After a day in the field,
all participants are invited to attend the short compilation meeting to warm up, chat with
other birders, and find out how the count fared. It is a lot of fun.
Fees: Each observer over the age of 18 must pay a $5.00 fee to participate in the Denver CBC.
Participants should pay the $5.00 fee to their Area Leader before taking part in the Count.
Checks should be made payable to National Audubon Society, not to DFO.
Pre-counts: Area Leaders are encouraged to conduct pre-counts in their areas, particularly
if unfamiliar with the area. Since days and times of pre-counts will vary, contact an Area
Leader if you wish to assist on a pre-count in a particular area. There is no fee for
participating in a pre-count.

We will meet at 0630 at the Colorado Division of Wildlife
bunkhouse below the dam at Bonny Reservoir. To get to the
bunkhouse from Bonny Reservoir head east on the south side
of the reservoir as if you were going to Hale and Kansas
(the road on the north side of Bonny Reservoir will likely be closed).
As you start dropping down below the level of the top of the dam,
you will pass a house on the right/east with lots of trees around it.
Keep going and as the road starts curving east, there will be a dirt
driveway heading north. You will see the bunkhouse on the left side
of this driveway (between the road to Hale and the dam). We will
meet inside the bunkhouse. There is the possibility for some
participants to spend the nights of the 1st and/or 2nd at the bunkhouse.
TO STAY AT THE BUNKHOUSE YOU MUST CONTACT THE COMPILER DIRECTLY BEFORE DECEMBER 20th.
