Hertel & Reuss 7x35WA and 8x40WW

Mfr: Hertel & Reuss Optik, Kassel, Germany

Hertel & Reuss is one of the lesser known German binocular makers.  They produced miltary optics during the Second World War and commercial optics afterwards but I do not believe they exist today.

This is a wide angle 7x35 porro model, somewhat rare for a German manufacturer.  The sample shown has markings in English and was probably an export model.  There are two prism adjustment screws externally accessible on each body half.

The 7x35 Wide Angle has moderately good optics.  It has light blue coatings that appear to be single layer.  The exit pupils are round with some prism leakage visible.  The image is soft towards the edge with some pincushion distortion.

8x40 Weitwinkel

Date: circa 1960?

AFOV: ~70 degrees

TFOV: 154m at 1000m (~8.8 degrees)

Eye Relief: ~12mm

Prisms: high index porro

Serial Number: none visible

The 8x40 Weitwinkel (wide angle) is similar to the 7x35WA.  It is also similar to the Zeiss Jena Delactem or Delactis, with a squat body.  Note the prism adjustment screws on the body.  This binocular is lightweight and easy to hold.

The 8x40WW has a nice wide field of view but it is noticeably soft towards the edge with some pincushion distortion.  The coatings and prism performance are like the 7x35's.  I would rate its optics as moderately good.
