| Zeiss Jena blc 8x60 Porro IIMfr: Carl Zeiss Jena, Germany Date: WWII AFOV: ~72 degrees TFOV: 160m at 1000m (~9 degrees) Eye Relief: ~24mm Prisms: Porro II Serial Number: 2161231 There were several versions of the Zeiss Jena 8x60 Porro II military binocular. They are all excellent performing wide angle binoculars, often said to be the best ever made. The one shown here is one of the later models with deep hard eyecups. Other versions had rubber eyecups. The long body is heavy but its shape makes it easy to hold. The views through the 8x60 are very comfortable, with the long eye relief and well corrected field. There is very little distortion and just a small amount of astigmatism at the edge. The objective tubes are well baffled. A small amount of prism leakage is present. The sample shown has a simple cross hair reticle in the right eyepiece (with a very short horizontal line). I would have to agree that this is one of the finest binoculars ever. Modern binoculars just do not match its combination of excellent wide angle views and long eye relief. |
