synergy2 Private commissions

Works in this section were commissioned by private art collectors. In most cases these works were designed prior to commissioning, or were developed from existing maquettes (e.g. Water Nymph, Apollo, Synergy II, Inception, Trumpeters). Donna Sdraiata was developed exclusively to meet a client's specifications.

Recently, attorney Richard Angino and his wife Alice created an Italian Renaissance Garden with classic pavilions, fountains, sculptures, and reflecting pools, located on the slopes of the Blue Mountain in the Susquehanna Valley north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I was commissioned by the Anginos to create sculpture works to adorn the fountains, the environments surrounding the gardens, and the reflecting pools on 35 acres of landscaped terrain.

synergy2Wide Synergy II

Synergy II is a constellation of 10 interconnected figures dancing across granite blocks as if partaking in some ancient Dionysian rite. Although suspended in space, the implied ascending/descending motion of Synergy II, is an example of a fully developed design which evolved out of my earlier series of interconnected figures
By deobjectifying the human form and using it as a structural element, I have been able to define volumes, bridge and architecturally link spaces. This obsession has lead me to compose a series of sculptures containing multiple figures in random and sometimes regular coordinates (compare Gravitrons, Sphere, Synergy II,Ad Astra, Arbor Cosmica). The loosely arranged sheets of figures suspended in space create the illusion of a gossamer like transparent network. My long term objective in these works is to develop structures on a large scale, in a similar manner to Kenneth Snelson's tensegrity non-objective structures. In Synergy II this goal was achieved by including the human form to greater enhance the poignancy of the space as public art.

donna Donna Sdraiata

Donna Sdraiata translated from Italian means "reposing woman". This life-size marble commission was an attempt at satisfying the client's desire in obtaining a sculpture of a "perfect woman". Although cliche, perfection and beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Donna Sdraiata was carved in Pietrasanta, Italy, in "Bianco P" marble under the direction of one of the finest marble artisans in the world.

apollo Apollo

Included in the Italian Gardens, Apollo conforms to the Renaissance concept of life as a balance between reason (Apollo) and wild nature (Dionysus). I took the liberty to distort and animate the anatomical proportions: compressing the torso, reducing the head size, elongating the limbs etc.

Trumpeters

trumpeters trumpeters

The Trumpeters philosophically portrays a man and a woman, announcing with the blast of their trumpets, as they leap from the physical world into the spiritual realm, where the human spirit survives through eternity. The work is transcendental in nature and mirrors my belief in an eternal spirit, and the necessity for a constant reaffirmation of one's hopes.
