Biography

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1953, William Duffy spent his childhood years in rural New England. Because of his early training under the tutelage of Mrs. Elinor Marvin in the Burlington, Massachusetts school system, he was accelerated into a scholarship program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. At the Museum School Duffy completed his undergraduate diploma in Fine Arts, with a concentration in figurative sculpture and drawing. Subsequently, he entered the Johnston Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Princeton, New Jersey, where he completed a three-year internship in state-of-the-art foundry techniques. The experiences gained at the Johnson Atelier have prepared Duffy to direct and execute all phases of design, fabrication, and installation of his large scale public art projects. In 1983, Duffy received an MFA from University of Maryland at College Park. Duffy is widely recognized for his intricately designed sculpture compositions for a variety of public and private collections. Duffy is increasingly involved in the planning of landscape around his work, including water as an element in his compositions. He works most often in bronze, stainless steel and granite to create durable works designed to withstand time, weather and human contact. Currently Duffy maintains a studio in Baltimore, Maryland.
