INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY: BOOK OF MATTHEW

By Dennis Schmidt 12/2007

This paper discusses the Bible book of Matthew.  Matthew is the largest (by number of chapters) gospel (good news) of the three synoptic (a viewing together) Matthew, Mark, & Luke gospels.  Luke has the largest number of verses and words.  91% of Mark is covered in Matthew compared with 53% in Luke.  Matthew is written to the Jewish people to present Jesus as the Davidic Jewish King.  All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

His name means gift of the Lord. He was also called Levi and was from the tribe of Levi's.  He was a tax collector or publican & they were hated by the Jews.  He is the writer of Matthew.

Matthew 9:9-10  "And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. {10} And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples."

Matthew 10:3  "Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;"

Mark 2:14  "And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him."

Mark 3:18  "And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,"

Luke 5:27  "And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. {28} And he left all, rose up, and followed him. {29} And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them."

Luke 6:15  "Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,"

Matthew 1:1  "The book of the generation of M Jesus M T Christ T, the M son M of David, the M son M of Abraham."

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ: This is written to the Jews who have Abraham as their father and David as the king from Judas tribe family.  The genealogy is through the line of Joseph.  After Joseph marriage to Mary, Jesus becomes his earthly father which makes Jesus come from Judas/David family tribe.  Mary also was from the Judas/David family tribe.

Luke 3:23-38 has Jesus genealogy from Adam, and it is through the line of Mary His earthly birth mother.

Matthew 1:20  "But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost."  Joseph is guided by the God.

Matthew 2:23  "And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be [ fulfilled ] which was spoken by the prophets, M He M shall be called a Nazarene."

He came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene: Note plural prophets for many Old Testament scriptures and not referring to a specific scripture.  Nazarene was an unlikely place for the Messiah as this was a despised place.  The Northern Galilee Roman garrison was located in Nazareth, and the Jews believed those living there were traitors.  The scripture could also refer to a synonym of contemptible or despised from the Hebrew word netzer for rod and branch for Messiah as Jesus was despised.

Isaiah 11:1  "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:" (Rod is <netzer> the same root word used for branch in Isaiah 11:1 and other for Messiah).

Jeremiah 23:5-6  "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. {6} In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."

John 1:46  "And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see." Nazarene was a synonym for comtemptible or despised place during that time period.  Jesus was also despised.

Isaiah 53:3  "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

Acts 24:5  "For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:"

Matthew 4:4  "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every [ word ] that proceedeth out of the mouth of /\ God /\."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KEYWORD: WORD {MATTHEW 4:4 - 27:14}

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. {Matthew 4:4}

(2) The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. {9} For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.{10} When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. {Matthew 8:8-10}

(3) When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: {17} That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. {Matthew 8:16-17}

(4) When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. {20} But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; {21} Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. {22} He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. {23} But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. {Matthew 13:19-23}

(5) But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. {24} But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. {25} Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. {Matthew 15:23-25

(6) Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, {2} Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: {Matthew 23:1-2}

(7) And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. {Matthew 26:75}

(8) And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. {Matthew 27:14}

Deuteronomy 8:3  "And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live."
