This paper discusses the Bible book of Mark. It may have been the first gospel written. The gospel was written to show Jesus works rather than what Jesus said. It explains Jewish customs to non-Jews, moves quickly with words like immediately, and vividly describes events. Mark may have been writing Peter’s gospel as he spent a lot of time with Peter. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

MARK’S BACKGROUND:

Acts 12:11-12 "And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. {12} And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying." Mark’s mother’s house was key gathering place of early believers in Jerusalem.

Acts 12:24-25 "But the word of God grew and multiplied. {25} And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark." Mark goes on missionary journey with Paul.

Acts 13:13 "Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem." John failed & left journey.

Acts 15:36-40 "And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. {37} And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. {38} But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. {39} And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; {40} And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God." A falling out between Paul & Barnabas over Mark is later corrected by Paul.

Acts 9:26-27 "And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. {27} But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus." Barnabas first brought Paul to the disciples. This falling out between Paul & Barnabas was a major setback which Paul later restores Mark.

Colossians 4:10 "Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)" Mark is Barnabas cousin.

2 Timothy 4:11 "Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry." Paul ask for Mark as he is back in Paul’s grace.

Philemon 1:24 "Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers." Mark is completely restored as partner of the gospel with Paul.

1 Peter 5:13 "The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son." Peter has a close relationship with Mark who learns about Jesus life & ministry which Mark uses to writes the first gospel.

The Spirit like a dove descending upon Jesus: The Holy Spirit, God, takes the form of a dove. This is the only place the Spirit is seen.

Peter owned a ship and was partners with James and John who also had a ship. He with John & Peter were the three closest disciples to Jesus. He was the first apostle martyred.

Luke 5:10 "And so <was> also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men."

Called to the ministry:

Three closest disciples to Jesus:

JOHN: His name means Lord of grace or whom the Lord graciously gave. He was referred to as the disciple that Jesus loved. His books reference love many times. John was the Last book of the Bible written.

Isaiah 53:4-5 "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. {5} But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Mark 1:41 "And M Jesus M, moved with compassion, put forth M his M hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, M I M will; be thou clean." Jesus is always moved by our needs.

Mark 1:43 "And M he M straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;"

Mark 1:45 "But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that M Jesus M could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to M him M from every quarter."

JESUS HEALS PARALYTIC: {2:1-12} Also found in {Matthew 9:1-8} & {Luke 5:17-26}

Mark 2:1 "And again M he M entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that M he M was in the house."

Mark 2:2 "And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and M he M preached the word unto them."

Mark 2:3 "And they come unto M him M, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four."

Mark 2:4 "And when they could not come nigh unto M him M for the press, they uncovered the roof where M he M was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay." Jesus sees their faith to do all that they did and gives them more than just the healing

C) JESUS FORGIVES SINS {MARK 2:5-12}

Mark 2:5 "When M Jesus M saw their [ faith ], M he M said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee." Sickness and sin sometimes go together.

Mark 2:6 "But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their [ hearts ]," For scribes see Mark 1:22

WAY: Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only

Mark 2:7 "Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but /\ God /\ only?"

Mark 2:8 "And [ immediately ] when M Jesus M perceived in M his M /\ spirit /\ that they so reasoned within themselves, M he M said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your [ hearts ]?" Heart or mind

Mark 2:9 "Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?"

Thy sins be forgiven thee: Jesus is God and can forgive sins. He proves that the Son of man has power to forgive sins by also healing the person. If God was not with Him, He would of failed in healing.

WHAT: Ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins

Mark 2:10 "But that ye may know that the M Son of man M hath [ power ] on earth to forgive sins, (M he M saith to the sick of the palsy,)"

Mark 2:11 "M I M say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house."

Mark 2:12 "And [ immediately ] he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified /\ God /\, saying, We never saw it on this fashion." Amazed: They had never seen a healing like this

III) SERVANT OPPOSITION: {MARK 2:13-8:26}

A) MATTHEW CALLED {MARK 2:13-17}

Mark 2:13 "And M he M went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto M him M, and M he M taught them."

Mark 2:14 "And as M he M passed by, M he M saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow M me M. And he arose and followed M him M."

Mark 2:15 "And it came to pass, that, as M Jesus M sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with M Jesus M and M his M disciples: for there were many, and they followed M him M."

Mark 2:16 "And when the scribes and Pharisees saw M him M eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto M his M disciples, How is it that M he M eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?"

Mark 2:17 "When M Jesus M heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: M I M came not to call the righteous, but sinners to [ repentance ]."

They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: They do not know they need help.

Luke 16:15 "And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God."

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance:

Luke 15:7 "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance."

John 9:34 "They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out."

B) LAW VS GRACE {MARK 2:18-28}

Mark 2:18 "And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto M him M, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but M thy M disciples fast not?"

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast thy disciples fast not .. Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them: Jesus is present so no need to fast

Matthew 6:16-18 "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. {17} But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; {18} That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."

Mark 2:19 "And M Jesus M said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast."

(1) {Mark 2:20} "But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days."

(2) {Mark 8:31} "And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again."

(3) {Mark 10:33-34} "Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: {34} And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again."

GARMENT & WINE: {2:21-22} Also found in {Matthew 9:16-17} & {Luke 5:36-39}

Mark 2:21 "No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse."

Mark 2:22 "And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles."

Sew new cloth to old garment – rent or new wine in old bottles – bottles bust: These parables show how Jesus teachings of Christ’s grace in the New Testament will not fit in the Old Testament law forms.

Matthew 9:16-17 "No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. {17} Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved."

John 1:17 "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ."

PLUCKING CORN: {2:23-28} Also found in {Matthew 12:1-8} & {Luke 6:1-5}

Mark 2:23 "And it came to pass, that M he M went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and M his M disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn."

Mark 2:24 "And the Pharisees said unto M him M, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?"

Disciples to pluck the ears of corn; Pharisees asked why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful: Mark 2:27 - The Sabbath is for men, not man for the Sabbath.

Mark 2:25 "And M he M said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?"

Mark 2:26 "How he went into the house of /\ God /\ in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the showbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?"

David was hungry and ate temple priest showbread which was unlawful:

1 Samuel 21:3-6 "Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present. {4} And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women. {5} And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel. {6} So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away."

Matthew 12:4-8 "How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? {5} Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? {6} But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. {7} But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. {8} For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day."

Jesus answer is the Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath:

Mark 3:4-6 "And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. {5} And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. {6} And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him."

Luke 13:14-15 "And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. {15} The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?"

Mark 2:27 "And M he M said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:"

Mark 2:28 "Therefore the M Son of man M is M Lord M also of the sabbath."
