The Astor-Shaw Connection

Lady Nancy's first husband was Robert Gould Shaw (d. 1930), a cousin and namesake of the Col. Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863) who commanded the well-known 54th Mass. Infantry assaulting Battery Wagner, on Morris Island in South Carolina during the Civil War (you DID see the movie "Glory", didn't you?). Col. Shaw and many of his troops died in combat and were buried in the sands of the island. (For an excellent account of life on Morris Island during the assaults on Fort Sumter and Battery Wagner, see The Gate of Hell, Stephen Wise, 1994.)
