and of Lady Nancy Astor (did you know about the connection between Lady Nancy and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment of Civil War fame?). Wish I had some of her money and some of the General's old world gentility.

I'm collecting the basic genealogy information of the families which made up the Clifton Forge I remember, as well as those who put the place on the map in the first place. I'll be making this info available to other Clifton Forge enthusiasts through the archives of the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society in Covington, Va. It takes so long to find the relevant info, and I constantly need input from those who are in the know. If you have something to offer, please contact me.
The Astor-Shaw Connection
Lady Nancy's first husband was Robert Gould Shaw (d. 1930), a cousin and namesake of the Col. Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863) who commanded the well-known 54th Mass. Infantry assaulting Battery Wagner, on Morris Island in South Carolina during the Civil War (you DID see the movie "Glory", didn't you?). Col. Shaw and many of his troops died in combat and were buried in the sands of the island.
