The Railroad Interpretive Group

July 2005

General Purpose and Plan

  1. To interpret the history of the railroad's impact on and presense in the local community and its environs, through static and operational displays of model railroading and other aspects of railroad lore. This will be accomplished through the efforts of a group organized specifically for this mission.

  2. Further mission detail:
    1. Primary mission: To interpret the history of the railroad's impact on and presense in a local community and its environs, through static and operational displays of HO model railroading and other aspects of railroad lore.
    2. Secondary mission: Entertain and attract tourists, to lengthen their visit in the community, which will support local merchants.
    3. Offspring mission: Provide opportunity for residents to offer input and effort to further the missions.

  3. Primary Level / The Main Plan
    1. Organize and operate through the means of an group of individuals who are dedicated to the mission and to the hobby, whereby the group can work to establish displays which are historically and esthetically correct and up to normal standards of the hobby of model railroading, conducting business in a responsible and acceptible manner, and maintaining the integrity of the mission.
    2. Establish a permanent location ("primary site") in the local community, which site would be on a traffic pattern to encourage visitation and viewing by the touring public.
    3. A landlord, through a nominal contract, would provide the site and support in utilities.
    4. The site requires the ability to provide security for the work and for any personal equipment loaned by volunteers, as well as environmental support through ventilation, heating, and cooling.

  4. Establish a sponsorship plan providing
    1. For funding and other support of continuous operation of the primary site (and secondary sites of a temporary nature in the outlying environs), and
    2. For the provision of contruction and display materials, and
    3. For insurance

  5. Displays

Construct operational displays in a modular system to allow for

    1. periodic and continuous change in the display,
    2. a semi-permanent display in one location, and
    3. portable, temporary displays to be set up in remote locations.

  6. Complement the semipermanent display with static or other operational units of which the central theme is railroading in general.
