Debate over Independence – Monday, October 5

You will be assigned a role in the debate over whether of not America should declare independence.  You have the following tasks.

1. Research your person.  Be prepared to give a very short introduction to your person when we debate in class.

2. Bring in a name plate so we will know who you are. Illustrate it appropriately.

4. Read at least one primary source by your person.  You can find links to what your person wrote about the idea of independence at the Links page my site (although a few of you will receive handouts since I couldn’t find anything on the web for your person.)  Here is the link to my site:

5. Be prepared to debate in class the pro and con arguments for independence. You must argue based on your assigned role.

6. Hand in a typed summary of the arguments that your person made on independence based on the primary document.  Use your own words.  You can use bullet-points.  This will be about a page.

Participation in the class debate.  How accurately do you portray your person and how actively do you participate in the debate with well-reasoned arguments reflecting your person’s positions?  This isn’t the time just to wing it.  I want to know that you’re arguing as your person would have argued.
