Quiz Bowl

These competitions involve middle school students cooperating as a team to answer questions on a specially programmed computer disk. The Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a state contest in which we compete against other North Carolina Middle Schools. More than 45,000 students from over 3000 schools across the U.S., Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa will participate in the Knowledge Master Open. Both these contests run on computers to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large academic event without the expense of traveling to a central site.

Students amass points for the speed and accuracy of their answers in topics covering all aspects of the curriculum. Teams have two 60 second opportunities to answer each question. If the correct answer is given the first time, they receive a score plus bonus points depending on the speed of the response. They may still earn a few points for correct answers on the second try. Sample topics are world history, geography, current events, math, grammar, fine arts, biology and government.

The questions are in multiple choice format. The team captains must listen carefully as the students on the team call out the answers and quickly decide which one is the correct answer. There is a lot of pressure on the captain to listen to answers shouted out about the team that are sometimes contradictory. They must recognize who on the team is strong in which area and whom the captain can trust to know the right answer for a particular question. It takes a lot of work for a group of twenty or so middle school students to work together as a team.

The Quiz Bowl team at Fred J. Carnage Middle School meets weekly after school with their coach, Mrs. Newmark. there are two teams: a Sixth Grade team and one for both Seventh and Eighth Graders. Our teams have been very successful since they began competing in 1995. Click below to see how we've done.
