Ztrack
The Magazine for Z Scale Model Railroading

This site has now been visited times since the counter was installed.

Z-Scale is only 1:220,
with rails only ¼" (6.5mm) apart!
It is about 2 times smaller than HO!

This is a wee bit hard to believe, but doing a search on HotBot for
"Ztrack" ca. 1998 yielded exactly 220 hits!

REVIEWS OF ZTRACK ISSUES

I stopped reviewing when I inadvertently let my subscription lapse and a certain editor didn't howl about it!  Unless I get overwhelmed with requests, I think I'll leave it this way, but the four succeding issues were each more fabulous than the preceding ones, as was the "latest" ("latest" is the operative word - Vol. 8, Number 6, Nov-Dec 2002, only arrived 16 Jan 03!).   rev.gif (18 Jan 03)

INDEX to This Page

The last issue reviewed:

MailBag - miscellany.

Turntables, Roundhouses, The Complete Spin - Rob Kluz.

Rewiring Märklin's Turntable - Jeffery MacHan {well illustrated}.

Another ad from Bob"Z" for those gold and silver Märklin locos {which I still think are vile - there are so many people starving in this world!  Must be selling like hotcakes!}.

Packing a Märklin Roundhouse into a Suitcase - Jeffery MacHan {actually, once again, it's an attaché case}.

Details, details and more details... - Rob Kluz on the area around turntables.

American Z Line (formerly Rogue Line) Introduces PAs (and PBs) - {Finally!  ALCo PA-1s and PB-1s in Z!}  Small Scale Works to Rogue to American Z (now owned by Norwegian Rail Miniatures) and we will have a limited run (300) {at an unlimited price - $560 msrp/$470 offer} in AT&SF, D&RGW, NYC, PRR (with antennae), SP, and UP (with correct detailing for each) and an unpowered PB-1.  From Ajin in brass and available only through Ztrack.  There is an accompanying insert.

My insert fell out but I found it - it's a questionnaire about the PA-1s and PB-1s,
which are offered as PA, PA-PB, PA-PB-PA, PA-PB, and PB.

Next in line, for Winter 2002, will be the EMD E8/E9!

Casey Jones Stalling?  Easy Fix... - Jeff MacHan suggests a simple way.

Märklin News... Branch Line Cars Revised - DB sat has more elaborate baggage-mail car. Märklin EXCLUSIV 2/2001 Items Announced - Three-car Henkel two-axle tank car set #86113 (supplementing last year's four-car set #86112) and set #86615 with a Käble type 70 021 truck tractor and a Culemeyer-type road trailer for moving freight cars a privately-owned Brauerei Ganter two-axle reefer is included in the set.

Side-bar - Märklin is now blackening the wheels of Z locos and cars and some steam drawbars.

Alcatel is selling mobile phones in a presentation case with an SBB Class 460 loco {collectors are already paying $1,000 and up; just what we always needed!}.

David George's "Golden-Blackhawk & Central City Railroad" - well-illustrated feature on an oversized module that will be in the Z booths at the NMRA show (see below).

Lenz Agency announces a decoder for DCC in Z!

Two-page color centerspread by Micro-Trains Line for their EMD F-7 B-unit dummy locomotive (Santa Fe freight blue shown) - it won the 2000 MR Reader's Choice Award for Z Scale Product of the Year {I read MR but wonder how many Zedheads do and how many sent in their cards!}.

Pennzee color 1/3-page ad for their new steel sided reefers!  Armour, MILW, Swift, and Wilson (in sets of four).

Coreless motors, benefits for Z - Part 1 of 2... The history - Harald Freudenreich {of Freudenreich Feinwerktechnik (FR)} writes about the Faulhaber and similar coreless micro-motors {Ye Ed messed up the formulae and such horribly, and well-meaning helpers didn't do much of a job on the technical English, but it's still a great explication}.  Part 2 will examine conversion kits.

A retraction, apology, and reprinting is required,
both for Harald's honor as an engineer and author
and for the dignity of the magazine, as well as to
clarify the article for the average reader..

Tour schedule for Jeff MacHan's Val Ease Central.

Marks Introduces Z Vehicles - Marks Metallmodellcclassic's {sic} offers #0501 Ford A Pickup and #0502 Ford A tow truck, plus ca. 1959 #0551 MAN F8 covered stake body truck with matching trailer.

TRAX STIX Promises to Keep Track Clean - another abrasive stick - leaves no residue {I, personally am against the use of abrasives on railheads, except in emergencies; the scratches hold dirt and increase the surface area for corrosion}.

Ad for FR's Swiss Rorschach Helden Bergbahn DZeh2/4 Rack Locomotive (which Harald will display at the NMRA show).

NEWZLINE

Aspen's new brass {NOT cast lead/zinc!} U.S. saddle tanker body for the Märklin 0-6-0T #8800 {which appears to be a typo; there aren't too many of those around - the ubiquitous lil' critter that most of us have is the #8805 - but it will fit either of them or the new five-pole chassis}.

Micro-Trains 14403 UTLX #73355 Aug 46 ACF 39' single dome Union Tank Car in black with white lettering.

Adam Scull Appointed Booth Coordinator {I was advised that he had since declined}.

New Z Gauge Trac-LiteTM from OPI Industries - Model TL-200-Z Model Railroad Power/Polarity Track Tester with high-intensity LEDs.

Freudenreich's Swiss Layout - the display layout for Freudenreich Feinwerktechnik's product line, including working catenary, is shown and described.

Märklin's New Mini-Club Items for 2001, Export Items & EXCLUSIV 1/2001 - six (6) pages of new items {sorry, it's far too much to catalog here and many of the releases have already been described, but one item really caught my eye - the 2001 Museum car is a stake car with a heavy industrial 2-part stamping press}.

Creating Atmosphere with Sound - Jeff MacHan on adding sound to his Val-Ease Central {which now has a VE East and West}.

INSIDE THE BACK COVER - Harald Freudenreich's Swiss layout continues, in color, and an Aspen ad shows the saddle tanker engine (or just body - see above) and a fantastic single-truck "logging caboose" {a log-bunk/disconnect bobber} in color {these are from Westmodel and a wee bit pricey}.
