In the fall of 1987, a new arts group was established in Cobb County, GA as a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation under the name Cobb Festival Chorus, Inc. Key leaders of the community sensed a need for the development of a civic chorale in northeast Cobb because of the rapid growth and development of the area. The purpose of this musical organization is to provide an opportunity for members of the community to sing masterworks and the best of contemporary choral literature, and to provide an opportunity for audiences to hear these great works performed locally. The response to this new chorale has been dramatic. Many people have joined the group indicating that they had been searching for this kind of quality musical experience in the Atlanta area. The goal of the chorus is to achieve excellence in performance, exposure of the arts to others and development of a sense of camaraderie among music lovers in the community. The name of the chorus was changed in January of 1999, to The Georgia Festival Chorus to more accurately reflect the membership and establish the home base with worldwide audiences. Members of The Georgia Festival Chorus are selected from the community at large by audition, and rehearse each week to prepare quality concert programs. The chorus is funded by contributions from corporate sponsors, local businesses, grants, and private donors.
