golf balls, sandwiches, and now tree seeds into orbit...

Stuart Roosa worked for the Forest Service in Oregon before becoming an astronaut. He worked first as a smokejumper at the Siskiyou Smokejumpers' Base where he earned himself the nickname of Smoky. He also worked as a surveyor in Oregon. When he learned that he was the command module pilot for Apollo 14 he wanted to do something for the Forest Service. He decided to take tree seeds from six species of trees: American sycamore, coast redwood, Douglas fir, loblolly pine, slash pine, and sweetgum. After the flight, the seeds were germinated in Mississippi and California. Nearly 450 seedlings grew, but none of the slash pine seeds germinated. The seedlings were made available to state forestry organizations for the United States Bicentennial in 1976 and 1977. The seedlings were then offered to foreign ambassadors for their countries.
