Descendants of Thomas Lewellen

Generation One

     1.  Thomas1 LEWELLEN was born circa 1740.  He married first Tabitha (--?--), last name possibly Beck, by whom he had four children. After her death he married Susanna JENNINGS circa 1793 and had three children. Susanna was likely the daughter of Benjamin Jennings who came from England and settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1776.

Thomas’ father may have been Samuel Lewellyn, born circa 1698 in Wales, who married Hannah Wilks JONES. They came to Augusta County, Virginia, from which Monongalia County was formed in 1776, some time around 1769 and resided in the Cheat Neck area along the Pennsylvania border where Samuel ran a ferry.  Hannah was an original member of the Forks of Cheat Baptist Church founded in 1775. Samuel had 10 children (those born in Wales obviously from a first wife): John; born 1731, Wales; Samuel, born 1733, Wales who married Elizabeth Sadler Stanton and supposedly moved to Kentucky; Jacob, born 1735, Wales; Philip, born 1737, Wales who married Mary Oldacre; Benjamin, born 1739; Asa; Thomas, born 1741; Mary; David, born 1743, and Doctor, born 25 August 1757.  No documentary evidence has been found as yet confirming this information.

The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, edited by Frederick A. Virkus shows in Volume 6, page 332:

"5.  - Jacob Jones (1732 -1829) his mother Hanna, m 2d Samuel Lewellen to Monongahela Valley 1770 and first settled on Dunkard Creek, now Pa., where 1777, his 2 oldest children, Mary and John were captured by Indians:  To Chet Bottom, now in Preston County, VA., finally settled on a larger grant of land near what is now Knottsville, W.V. 1775..."

The descendants of  this Thomas appear to have adopted a variety of spellings for the family surname, including Lewellyn, Llewellyn, Lewallen, and Lieuellen. Often a single individual is found in various documents, from census to marriage to death records, with different spellings.  This occurs in all descendant lines of Thomas Lewellen, husband of Tabitha and Susanna, but is seen more frequently is this particular line.  For each of the individuals below, and their descendants, I have presented the surname spelling I judge to be have been most commonly used by them .

Samuel was living in Monongalia County, West Virginia at least by 1799 when he wed Elizabeth GOUGH, daughter of Joshua and Charity (Lunsford) Gough on 24 March.  Samuel was on the tax list on ‘Swamp’, as opposed to another Samuel Lewellen listed as on CR, or Cheat River (he ran the ferry), at least in tax years 1805 through 1810. Swamp Run is in the area of Grafton in what is now Taylor County, West Virginia. In 1811 Samuel purchased 136 acres adjoining John Wickware on Three Forks Creek, a bit north of Swamp Run in Monongalia County, Virginia. Three Forks Creek covers portions of present-day Monongalia, Preston and Taylor Counties and enters the Tygart River at the town of Grafton. In 1824 he purchased 56 adjoining acres. Samuel and Elizabeth sold 172 acres of this property in April 1836 and likely left soon after for Delaware County, Indiana. He was residing in Indiana when he sold an additional 60 acres of Virginia land in 1838.

Samuel’s will, written 26 August 1840 and probated 8 November 1842 in Delaware County, Indiana, lists as heirs his wife Elizabeth; youngest son Felix; daughters Abigail Gough, Nancy Ryans [sic]; Mary Williams, Elizabeth Currant; Rebecca Life, and children of his sixth daughter Susannah Dragoo. The executors were Philip Luellen (a brother), Rawley L. Luellen (a son), and John Baugh. Witnesses were William Williams, Jr. and James Orr, Sr. John Baugh, an executor, was one of the earliest settlers in Liberty Township, Delaware County, arriving in 1836, perhaps in the same group of settlers as Samuel and Elizabeth. James Orr, Sr., a witness, purchased land and settled in Delaware Township in Delaware County in 1838, and his sons Joseph and Samuel purchased land in Liberty Township in 1838. Samuel Lewellen and his brother Philip, an executor of his estate, settled near Joseph Orr in Liberty Township. Land records show that Samuel purchased a tract of acreage in section 36 in the northeast corner of that township in 1836. Purchasing a tract in that same section in 1837 was Thomas Gough, likely Elizabeth’s brother.

Elizabeth, Samuel’s wife, was born circa 1778 in Virginia.  She died 7 August 1849 in Delaware County, Indiana and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Elizabeth’s father Joshua Gough was born in 1744 in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County, Virginia and he and his wife Charity spent their early married years in Fauquier County, Virginia.  This is perhaps where Elizabeth was born.  Joshua’s will, written 11 November 1812 and probated in Monongalia County, Virginia 18 May 1820, leaves bequests to his wife Charity and sons Thomas, Byram and William, and daughters Lettice Boyles, Ann Jones, Lucy Jones, Elizabeth Lewellin [sic], Charity Minear and Polly Lewellin [sic].      John was born in 1836 in Ohio and was married once before Jane. He died before 1930 in Indiana.  John, Jane and their family appeared on the federal census of 1900 in York Township, Steuben County, Indiana.  In 1910 they resided in Edon, Williams County, Ohio, and by 1920 were back in Steuben County, Indiana, again in York Township.

The couple had daughters Genevieve J., born circa 1917; and Maxine J., born circa 1918.

     106.  Jonas Henry4 LEWELLEN (Lunsford3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born 18 October 1867 in Athens County, Ohio. Both he and his sister Catherine were raised in the county orphanage, and so it is presumed that his parents died some time after 1850. Jonas died of paralysis 6 November 1916 in Athens County at age 70, and was buried 8 September 1916 in Green Lawn Cemetery in that county. There is some confusion regarding his given name. His death certificate, on which his daughter Lottie Griffin is the informant,  has Jonah Lewellen, and on the 1870 federal census he was enumerated as Josiah. However, other censuses and military and pension records use Jonas, and that is the name presented here. Jonas enlisted in Company E, 174th Ohio Volunteer Infantry 11 August 1864 and was mustered out 28 June 1865 having suffered various maladies during his 10 months of service, including measles. He applied for a military pension in 1878 and received $27 a month until his death.

Before beginning his service in the Civil War, on 7 February 1864 in Athens County Jonas married Sarah Ellen FRENCH who was born 15 March 1848 in Ohio.  In 1877, after the birth of five children, Jonas and Sarah were admitted to the Athens County Childrens Home infirmary by order of the Athens County, York Township Trustees. A note with their record indicated that Jonas was not in good health and was unable to support his family. Apparently the couple was in and out of the home a few times with their four youngest children. A child was born to them there in 1878 but died the same day.  Sarah deserted the family around 1884 and did not take any of the children with her. She moved in with Abraham Six and had at least four children with him. Interestingly, in the 1900 federal census for Nelsonville, Athens County, Abraham was enumerated as age 61, born in August 1838, and with him were Sarah Lewellen [sic], age 41, "nurse", and  their four children who were listed as "boarders" and who were enumerated with the last name Lewellen. In the 1910 census Sarah was enumerated with the surname Six and was widowed. With her were two of her children and a grandson, all with the last name Six.  Sarah attempted to claim Jonas' military pension after his death. Giving her surname as Lewellyn, she filed a petition 24 August 1917, signed before a notary, asserting that Jonas deserted her about 1885 "without just or blameful cause or excuse," leaving her with three small children under the age of 16. The petition was rejected.
