Descendants of John McClain

Generation One

     1.  John1 MCCLAIN was born 3 March 1803 in Pennsylvania.  He married Elizabeth MAULLER circa 1823 in Pennsylvania, likely Fayette County in the southwestern part of the state.  John died 20 October 1869 in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana, at age 66, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana.

The McClains are said to be of Scotch-Irish extraction.  Supposedly they settled in New England and the eastern states in colonial days, and fought in the Revolutionary War.

Not long after they married, John and Elizabeth migrated to Perry County, Ohio, settling first in Pike Township.  On 30 April 1831, John purchased 76.46 acres of land in Saltlick Township, Perry County, Ohio for $95.58 (west half of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15).  His last name was spelled McLean.  The land patent was granted 2 April 1833.  He added to his holdings by purchasing an additional 38.23 acres of land for $47.78 on 25 August 1832 (northeast quarter of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15).  The land patent for this land was granted 14 September 1835, and his last name, with signature, was spelled McLane.  His final purchase of land in Perry County was 27 December 1833 (southeast quarter of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15).  He bought an additional 38.23 acres for $47.78, the land patent for which was granted 5 October 1835.  His name and signature show the spelling of his last name as yet another variation: McLain.  In the census of 1840, John and family, with last name spelled a fourth variation, McClain, are residing on the land he purchased in Saltlick Township, Perry County.   Around 1846 John and his family moved from Perry County, Ohio to Grant County, Indiana.  John purchased 160 acres in Green Township that was part of  land acquired by treaty from the Miami Indians and made available to settlers.  John started  a factory to manufacture wooden bowls, it being the first machinery set in motion in Green Township.  John also operated a sawmill and still house.  According to "Past and Present of Randolph County, Indiana," pg. 1080-1082, John McLain [sic] "was a manufacturer of wooden bowls and these he peddled over the country from his wagon.  He became quite a prominent citizen of Grant County."  The same passage says that his father, William McLain, was a woodworker by trade in 1846. This researcher has yet to find any documents confirming that John’s father was named William.

John’s wife, Elizabeth MAULLER, was born 22 June 1803 in Pennsylvania.  She died 20 October 1863 at age 60 in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County.  The Mauller/Mauler/Mawler name is said to be Dutch.  Census and tax records for Fayette County, Pennsylvania, place a Conrad Mauller family there in 1800, and a William Mauller is listed on the 1810 census for that county.  In 1820 William is joined by a Mathias Mauller, and by 1830 both have left Pennsylvania and are in Perry County Ohio.  Since John McClain and his wife Elizabeth are also living in Perry County by 1830, it is strongly suspected that Elizabeth is tied to these Mauller, but no documents proving this connection have as yet been found.

Aaron, Cornelius and Stephen Mawler are found in Saltlick Township, Perry County in 1840, in close proximity to the John McClain household.  In 1850, Cornelius remains in Perry County, but Aaron and Seth are living close to John and Elizabeth in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana.  On this census, John is listed with real estate valued at $1500.  The next family listed, family 25, is that of Seth Mauler, age 28, a farmer born in Pennsylvania, with his wife Ursula, age 23, born in Ohio, and two children Mary J., age 3, born in Indiana, and John W., age 8 months, born in Indiana.  Ten families away is Aaron Mauler, age 40, born in Pennsylvania.  With him is Phoebe, age 38, born in Pennsylvania; Hannah, age 12, a female, born in Pennsylvania; William M., age 10, born in Ohio; Sarah A., age 8, born in Ohio; Martha, age 6, born in Ohio; Elizabeth, age 5, born in Indiana; James H., age 3, born in Indiana; Rebecca M., age 2, born in Indiana, and Harriet, age 6 months, born in Indiana. Again, no documents have been found proving the relationship of Elizabeth to the Mauller families living in Grant County, Indiana, but it is very likely that a relationship exists.

John McClain was a member of the Church of God (Christian Church), organized in 1856, and one of its first trustees. He appeared on the census of 1860 in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana, with  real estate valued at $6000 and personal property valued at $1500 – considerable sums of money for that time.

Children of John1 MCCLAIN and Elizabeth MAULLER were as follows:

2           i.           Rachel2 MCCLAIN was born circa 1825 in Perry County, Ohio.  She married William JORDAN 29 October 1848 in Grant County, Indiana.  In the 1850 census, Rachel and William are living in Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana, close to her sister Sarah and her husband Alexander Jordan, likely William’s brother.

MCCLAIN was born 8 January 1841 in Perry County, Ohio.  A bachelor, he died 20 June 1868 in Grant County, Indiana, at age 27, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana.  In Wills of Grant County, Indiana, Will Book 1, page 311, is a will for John J., dated 5 May 1868 and probated 7 Jul 1868.  Mary Jane Boal, no legal heir, received an equal share with his brothers and sisters.  Sister Harriett Lewellen was given fifty dollars more than any of the other brothers and sisters.  His father John was bequeathed five dollars.  The remainder of his property both real and personal was divided equally among:  Mary Jane Boal,  Rachel Jordan, Nancy Silbaugh, William McClain (Deceased) heirs, Sarah Jordan, James McClain, Harriet Lewellen, Susan Kelley, Elizabeth M. Hannah, Eliza Jane Hannah (Deceased) heirs, Thomas O. McClain and Sophia Mendenhall.  Executors are James Kelley and John B. Hannah.  Witnesses are W. D. Westerfield & David Hannah.  The Mary Jane Boal bequeathed in the will is Mary Jane McClain who married Archibald Boal 26 March 1840 in Perry County, Ohio.  She was born circa 1824 and is obviously some relation of John’s – perhaps a cousin or an aunt.  In 1850, Mary Jane and her husband and one-year-old daughter are living in Saltlick Township, Perry County (the township in which John and Elizabeth McClain and family lived before moving to Grant County, Indiana, circa 1846) next to the William Boles[sic] family (he age 28) and the John Boles[sic] family (he age 58), and just two families away from Philip and Jane Silbaugh (he age 65), the parents of Sebastian Silbaugh who married John McClain’s sister Nancy. In 1860 they are still in Saltlick Township, with five children.

Sebastian SILBAUGH was born circa 1826 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the son of Philip and Jane (Tissue) Silbaugh of Somerset County, Pennsylvania.  Philip and Jane moved west with their family from Somerset County to Fayette County, Pennsylvania some time before 1810.  Here they resided until about 1835 before moving with their eight children to Straitsville, Salt Lick Township, Perry County, Ohio.  A common mode of transportation for many Pennsylvanians bound for Ohio was a river raft, sometimes called a "broad horn" or an "ark."  The raft had a steering oar at the rear and was intended only for drifting downstream.  After a period of little more than fifteen years, Philip, Jane and their children and their spouses, including Sebastian and Nancy, moved again to Vernon County, Wisconsin.  Asbury Ridge was chosen as the site for the family's new home and it is in Asbury Ridge Cemetery that many Silbaughs are buried.

He is listed as Thomas A. McClain in the 1880 census for the family, but the age matches that of Hendricks.  There was no Thomas A., son of James and Mary Jane, according to Florence Cook.

Also according to Florence Cook, Hendricks supposedly married twice, and had five children by his first wife, the oldest named Carl.  When the first wife died Hendricks didn't know how to cope with raising five children alone and gave them up for adoption.  Carl kept the McClain name, but the younger children took their adoptive parents' names.  Carl became a college professor in the Chicago area and published a book dealing with the effects of adoption on children.

According to “Past and Present of Randolph County, Indiana,” 'Harriet McLain was brought by her parents to Grant County, Indiana, when she was a young girl and there she grew to womanhood and received her education in the public schools, and there she and Mr. Lewellen were married.  Grandfather William McLain was a wood worker by trade and when the family located in Grant county they found a very sparsely settled wilderness, which was still the home of Indians and the haunt of wild beasts.  Grandfather brought with him a grindstone with which to grind his tools, and the Indians often came to his shop to have their tomahawks ground, and (Harriet) would turn the crank to the grindstone for the red men, and in time she came to be a favorite with them.'

When Benjamin, who served in the volunteer infantry in the Civil War, died from a war-related illness, Harriet and her five children were left in destitute circumstances, and she was forced to make brooms and take on odd jobs to make ends meet.  Harriet did not begin receiving a soldier's widow's pension until 20 October 1873, although eventually she was awarded monies in arrears from the date of Benjamin's death.  The rate of her pension was $8.00 per month plus $2.00 per month for dependent children (under 16 years of age).  By the time of her death in 1917, Harriett was receiving $20 a month pension. William Burres on 6 August 1862.  He was mustered in 3 September 1862 at Camp Wayne, Indiana, and discharged 4 Februnary 1863.  A Declaration for Invalid Army Pension completed 8 December 1863 states that while in service at Gallipolis, Ohio on or about the 10th day of October, 1862, Benjamin 'was attacked with epileptic fits or spasm, which diseases continued to afflict him up to the said date of his discharge and were of so frequent occurrence as to render him entirely unfit for service.  He is informed by his surgeon and believes that this disease was caused by exposure and fatigue and lying on the wet ground.  He further states that up to that time he never had been afflicted by any such disease.  He further states that he has since his discharge been so bad as to render him unable to labor at his usual avocation.'  Benjamin had been a farmer and a laborer.  Benjamin died 13 February 1867 in Randolph County, Indiana.  The cause of death was epilepsy.  He was buried in Maxville Cemetery, Randolph County.
