Descendants of John Lamsdale

Generation One

     1.  John1 LAMSDALE was born circa 1800 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. He married Mary [--?--] in Worcestershire, and died in 1853 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

John appeared on the census of 1851 in Kidderminster with wife Mary and sons, William, George, and John also listed in the household. He was a handloom carpet weaver, per the census.

Mary [--?--] was born circa 1803 in Kidderminster. She was enumerated as head of household on the census of 1861 in Kidderminster, with sons George and John also listed in the household. On the census of 1871 she was in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, England, and son John was with her.

Known children of John1 LAMSDALE and Mary [--?--] were as follows:

+   2       i.    William2 LAMSDALE, born 2 January 1835 in Worcestershire, England; married Mary FIRTH; married Eunice W. SWAN.

Generation Two

     2.  William2 LAMSDALE (John1) was born 2 January 1835 in Worcestershire, England. He died 15 August 1898 in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 63, and was buried in Trissel Cemetery, Jackson Township, Montgomery County.

William attended school in Worcestershire until the age of nine, then assisted his father who was a carpet weaver. He emigrated from Liverpool to Philadelphia, and was the passenger indexed as William Lonsdale [sic], age 22, who departed Liverpool on the ship ‘Wyoming’ and arrived in Philadelphia 1 January 1856. His occupation was given as weaver.  It is known that upon arriving in the United States William engaged for a time in the carpet weaving trade. He later was a farmer. Some time before the federal census of 1860 William married Mary FIRTH and the couple was enumerated together in that census in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Mary was listed as a mantian maker. (A mantian is a cloak and variations of the word later designated a horse blanket.)  On 5 October 1863 William became a naturalized citizen in Dayton, the county seat of Montgomery County.  Witnesses were John Firth and George Firth, likely Mary’s father and perhaps a brother.

Mary Firth was born 9 April 1836 in England and died 29 July 1871 in Ohio at age 35. She was buried in Spangler Cemetery, Mad River Township, Clark County, Ohio. The vast majority of those with the surname Firth came from Yorkshire, England. A John Firth, a resident of Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio, who died 7 September 1881, was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England 9 October 1814 and was married there in 1835. According to his obituary he came to America in 1839 and traveled back to England in 1850, then returned to America in January 1856. His passage was on the same ship that brought William Lamsdale to this country, making it quite conceivable that he was Mary’s father and also the John Firth who witnessed William Lamsdale’s naturalization. John was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, leaving a wife and five children.
