Descendants of Johann Peter Hartmann Heuss

 

Generation One 

     1.  Johann Peter Hartmann¹ HEUSS was born circa 1730 in Wurttemberg, Germany and resided in Aldingen, Wurttemberg. Aldingen is a village on the Neckar River three miles southwest of Ludwigsburg which itself is nine miles by rail from Stuttgart, the capitol of Wurttemberg and the largest city in the state. Johann and his wife Anna Maria, whose surname is unknown, appeared in the register of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  Only one of their sons, Georg Philipp, appeared in the church register, but they likely had more children.

               +   2       i.    Georg Philipp² HEUSS, born 20 November 1764 in Neckarrems, Wurttemberg, Germany; married Rosina Catharina WEISERT.

 

Generation Two 

     2.  Georg Philipp² HEUSS (Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 20 November 1764 in Neckarrems, a town southeast of Ludwigsburg in Wurttemberg, Germany and died 26 June 1832 at the Bridge House at age 67.  He married Rosina Catharina WEISERT, daughter of Johann Georg Weisert and Maria Magdalena Kircher, in 1786 in Kleinaspach, Wurttemberg, Germany.

     George was toll master at the Bridge House on the Neckar River and a ship builder. He was also tavern keeper of The Lion Inn in Neckarrems and served as a village councilman. (His father-in-law Johann Georg Weisert was also inn keeper of The Lion Inn as well as a butcher and associate village councilman.)

     Rosina Catharina was born 17 March 1768 in Kleinaspach, Wurttemberg, Germany and was christened 18 March 1768 in Kleinaspach.  She died 11 June 1835 in Wurttemberg, Germany at age 67.

                    7       v.    Rosine Catharine HEUSS was born 15 March 1808. She married after 1847. In that year she was shown as a single person at the confirmation of her nephew Wilhelm Friedrich Heuss and her residence was given as Bietigheim, a town northwest of Ludwigsburg.

 

Generation Three

     3.  Anna Maria³ HEUSS (Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 8 February 1797 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  She died 13 September 1829 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany at age 32.

     Anna married Bernhard MAIER/MAYER, a farmer and vine dresser, on 7 June 1825 in Wurttemberg. He was born 23 August 1799 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg and died 23 February 1882 at age 82.

     Known children of Anna Maria³ HEUSS and Bernhard MAIER/MAYER, both born in Wurttemberg, Germany, were as follows:

                    8       i.    Christiane⁴ MAIER/MAYER was born 23 September 1825 and died 6 June 1909 at age 83.

     4.  Johann Peter Hartmann³ HEUSS (Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 September 1799 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. He married Maria Christiane THUMM 2 May 1826 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. It is thought Johann was deceased by 1854, the year his son Wilhelm Friedrich emigrated to America.

     Johann was a ship builder and toll master on the Neckar River. In October 1848 he left the Bridge House which he owned and joined the Parish of Hoheneck, and from this date forward his family was listed in the annals of Hoheneck.

     Maria Christiane was born 7 November 1798 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany, the daughter of Johann Michael Thumm, mayor at Aldingen, and Christiane Barbara Reichert.  After her husband and parents died Maria Christiane emigrated to the United States about 1860 to live with her son Wilhelm Friedrich (William Frederick) Heuss. She died 10 March 1891 in Salamonia, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana at age 92 and was buried in Salamonia Cemetery.

                  10       i.    Baby⁴ HEUSS was born 4 April 1827 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  He/she died 4 April 1827 in Aldingen.

                  11      ii.    Johann Philipp Jakob HEUSS was born 8 July 1829 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  He died 4 August 1835 in Aldingen at age 6.

             +   12     iii.    Rosine Friederike HEUSS, born 29 November 1831 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany; married Johann MAIERS.

             +   13      iv.    Wilhelm Friedrich HEUSS, born 28 September 1833 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany; married Marie Catharine KOPP.

                  14       v.    Louise Marie Mathilde HEUSS was born 26 January 1835 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  She died 29 July 1836 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany at age 1.

 

     5.  Martin Ludwig³ HEUSS (Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 11 April 1801 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  He died 19 March 1882 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 80 and was buried in Pisgah Cemetery, Mercer County.

    Martin, who also went by the name Ludwig, married Esther KOPP 12 August 1828 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg and worked for a time as a ship builder.  In 1853 he, Esther, and four surviving children of the 18 born to them left Le Havre, France on the ship “Orlando,” arriving in New York on 23 April. The ship’s passenger list has Martin Heuss, age 52, farmer; Esther, age 47, farmer; Esther, age 20, farmer; Anne-Marie, age 18, farmer; Joh. Friedr., age 9, child, and Friedrich, age 5 child. (The last child named was daughter Magdalena Friederike.) The family settled first in Marion County, Ohio, but by the 1860 census resided in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio where Ludwig farmed. In this census his name was enumerated as Lewis Hienss, per the index.

     Esther was born 10 January 1805 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany and is said to have been a first cousin to Friedrich Kopp who married Catharina Menner and also emigrated to the United States in 1853.  It was their daughter, Marie Catharine, who married Wilhelm Frederick Heuss, son of Johann Peter Hartmann Heuss, Martin’s brother, and Maria Christiane Thumm.  Esther's father has not been positively identified but could be Johann Georg Kopp, born 1771; Johann Jacob Kopp, born 24 July 1773; or Matthaeus Kopp born in 1780.  They were all sons of Johann Bernhardt Kopp and his second wife Anna Maria Rappold.  Johann Bernhardt was born at Neckarweihingen 9 July 1739 and died there 2 February 1828.  Anna Maria, his wife, was born 9 August 1745 and died 20 December 1809.  Johann Bernhardt Kopp’s first wife was Margaretha Haas who he married 25 November 1758.

     Esther died 10 October 1886 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 81. She was buried in Pisgah Cemetery.

Generation Four

     9.  Rosine Cathrine⁴ MAIER/MAYER (Anna Maria³ Heuss, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 8 April 1829 in Wurttemberg, Germany.  She emigrated to the United States in 1853 with family members, and married circa 1855 John Matthaus BISCHOFF who was born circa 1830 in Wurttemberg, Germany.  In 1880 their family lived in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana where Mathias, as he was called, was a blacksmith. He died before 1900.

     Rosine Cathrine died some time after 1900. In the census that year she lived with her son John in Salamonia and was enumerated as the mother of six children, four still living.

                  19       i.    Christena⁵ BISCHOFF was born circa 1860 in Marion County, Ohio.  She married George W. BRAKE some time after 1910 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana, and had been married previously, perhaps to a Lamming. George was born circa 1842 in Indiana.  Both Christena and George died after 1920.

                  20      ii.    Caroline BISCHOFF was born circa 1861 in Marion County, Ohio.

     12.  Rosine Friederike⁴ HEUSS (Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 November 1831 in Aldingen, Wurttemberg, Germany and was christened in 1845 in Wurttemberg.  She emigrated to the United States in 1852 and married Johann MAIERS/MAYERS/MAYER 18 September 1853 in Marion, Marion County, Ohio.  Rosine died 20 March 1896 in Marion County at age 64.  She was buried in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Richland Township in that county.

     Johann was born 2 September 1832 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany and also emigrated to the United States in 1852 and settled in Richland Township in Marion County. Once in America his surname is seen spelled variously as Myers (1860 census), Mayer (1870 and 1880 and 1910 censuses), Mayers (1900 and 1920 censuses) and his children appear to have not shared a common spelling. Johann died 9 April 1924 in Marion County, Ohio at age 91, and was buried in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery.

He married Elizabeth [--?--] circa 1888 in Marion County and they had no children. Elizabeth was born in January 1870 in Ohio.

     13.  Wilhelm Friedrich⁴ HEUSS (Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 28 September 1833 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  Wilhelm lived with his parents in the tavern they owned near a toll bridge on the Neckar River between the towns of Ludwigsburg and Cannstatt in Wurttemberg. Ludwigsburg was a military station and officers often came to eat at the tavern which was famous for its cuisine. As a young man Wilhelm worked in the shipyard. On 29 April 1854 he was issued a passport to leave for America the next day. The passport gave his reason for emigrating as: 'in order to find work.'  Upon arriving in the United States, William Frederick, as he spelled his name, settled first in Marion County, Ohio. After the birth of his first child, William moved to a farm in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, where he lived for about 40 years. Here he cut trees to clear the land and planted a large orchard of apples and pears trees. William built a log house with one large room and a loft above which in later years was enclosed and a frame addition added. In 1900 he sold this farm and bought a small one near Union City in Randolph County, Indiana and lived there until his death 24 February 1904 at age 70. He was buried in Union City Cemetery.

     William could not serve in the Civil War because of a crooked great toe. He was said to be a short, stocky man with a round face, who liked to smoke the tobacco he raised.

     William married Marie Catharine KOPP, daughter of Friedrich Kopp and Catharine Menner, 10 December 1857 in Bowling Green Township, Marion County, Ohio. Friedrich Kopp was said to have been a first cousin to Esther Kopp who married Martin Ludwig Heuss (See #5 above), her husband Wiliam’s uncle.  Marie Catharine was born 20 April 1836 in Poppenweiler, Wurttemberg, Germany.  She died 13 September 1906 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 70 and was buried in Union City Cemetery.

                  34      ii.    Maria HEUSS was born 6 August 1860 in Jay County, Indiana and died 17 November 1925 in Marion County, Ohio at age 65.  She was buried in that county. Maria never married and worked in a candy factory in the city of Marion.

             +   36      iv.    Rosina HEUSS, born 13 September 1864 in Jay County, Indiana; married Henry L. VEIT.

                  38      vi.    Sarah HEUSS was born 23 December 1868 in Jay County, Indiana and married Herman LORENZ circa 1913.  She died in 1930 and was buried in Union City Cemetery, Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana.

                  39     vii.    Karolina HEUSS was born 6 September 1870 in Jay County, Indiana and died 11 February 1871 in Jay County, Indiana age 5 months and 25 days. Her name was also spelled Caroline per her headstone.

             +   40    viii.    Karl Wilhelm HEUSS, born 28 December 1871 in Jay County, Indiana; married Letitia Romoline WOODBURY.

             +   41      ix.    Johannes Tobias HEUSS, born 22 February 1874 in Jay County, Indiana; married Mary Ann MONTGOMERY.

                  43      xi.    Klara HEUSS was born 24 January 1878 in Jay County, Indiana. Her name was also spelled Clara per the 1880 and 1900 censuses.

                  44     xii.    Albert Heinrich HEUSS was born 7 October 1880 in Jay County, Indiana.  He died 30 August 1973 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 92. About 1917 Albert married Gertrude BOWSER, who was born 17 July 1890, the daughter of Daniel and Alice (Ellis) Bowser, and died 25 June 1977 in Indianapolis at age 86.  Albert was a self-employed construction worker with Keurt Construction Company for 25 years, and also worked for Freeman Store Equipment 14 years. Albert and Gertrude had no children and resided in Indianapolis.

 

     15.  Esther⁴ HEUSS (Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 11 January 1833 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany and confirmed in 1846. In 1853 she came to the United States with her parents and three siblings, settling first in Marion County, Ohio and then in Mercer County, Ohio. Esther died 22 March 1903 in Jay County, Indiana at age 70.  She was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County.

     Esther married Frederick WORTZ who was born 28 November 1828 in Wurttemberg, Germany. Frederick enlisted in Company B., 42^nd Indiana Infantry on 22 October 1864 and served with distinction until mustered out 21 July 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. He died 1 April 1892 in Jay County, Indiana at age 63, and was buried in Green Mound Cemetery.  Frederick may have had a wife before Esther and had children John, Mary and Ellen by this wife, or the 1860 census placing Esther in the household of her parents may not be correct.  Frederick cannot be located in either the 1850 or 1860 censuses to confirm.  John, Mary and Ellen do appear as the son and daughters of Frederick in the 1870 census for Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.

     Known children of Esther⁴ HEUSS and Frederick WORTZ, all born in Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                  45       i.    Christina⁵ WORTZ was born 17 January 1862 and died 31 January 1891 at age 29.  She was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.

             +   46      ii.    Charles WORTZ, born 27 September 1864; married S. Ella WARNOCK.

                  47     iii.    Emma WORTZ was born in December 1869 and died in 1948 at age 79. She was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. Emma married John William MONEY 1 February 1896 in Jay County, Indiana. John was born in 1868 in Indiana and died in 1944 at age 76. He, also, was buried in Green Mound Cemetery. The couple had two daughters, both born in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana: Orpha E., born 9 April 1898, and Eva M., born circa 1902.

     16.  Anna Maria⁴ HEUSS (Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 25 January 1835 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany.  In 1853 she came to the United States with her parents and three siblings, settling first in Marion County, Ohio and then in Mercer County, Ohio. Mary, as she was called, died 4 July 1896 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 61.  She was buried in Union City Cemetery.

     Mary married Henry GIMBEL 25 January 1856, likely in Mercer County. Henry was born 29 July 1829 in Arheilgen, Darmstadt, Germany. His father, whose name may have been Peter, supposedly was a shepherd and worked for the government in Darmstadt.  According to his obituary Henry emigrated to the United States in 1849.  However, this date is in error since military papers show Henry serving in the military in Germany in 1851. He began his service as a Musketeer War-Reservist in the 3^rd Company, 4^th Infantry Regiment on 15 June 1850 and continued serving at least through 15 December 1851.  At the time of her death, Florence (Gimbel) Todd, Henry’s granddaughter, had his original army discharge papers and death notice. It is more likely that Henry was the Heinrich Gimbel on the passenger list for the ship ‘Admiral’, sailing from Le Havre, France and arriving in New York 13 July 1952. This Heinrich was aged 23 (or born circa 1829 as was Henry) and his occupation was a joiner. Traveling with him was a Dorothea Gimbel, age 19. Her relationship to Henry was not given. It is known that upon arriving in the United States Henry settled first in Cincinnati, Ohio.  After a short stay he went to Union City, Randolph County, Indiana and for eight years worked in the blacksmithing department of the Big Four Railroad.  He then started the first blacksmith shop in Union City at the northwest edge of town, which has since become a landmark. Henry died of pneumonia 9 January 1903 in Union City at age 73, and was buried 12 January 1903 in Union City Cemetery. Strangely, a printed funeral card for him lists his date of death as 16 January 1903, however his death certificate says 9 January.

     Known children of Anna Maria⁴ HEUSS and Henry GIMBEL were as follows:

             +   49       i.    William⁵ GIMBEL, born 3 December 1856 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio; married Mary Magdalena KRANER.

                  50      ii.    Mary GIMBEL was born 29 May 1859 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio and died in 1862 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio at age 3.  She was buried in Union City Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana. The story of Mary’s death is that a band of gypsies camping across the road from her parents’ home failed to extinguish their campfire when they broke camp in the morning. Mary wandered over to the smoldering fire, her dress ignited, and she burned to death.

             +   51     iii.    Henry GIMBEL, born 29 October 1862 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio; married Ella MORRIS; married Lillian E. [--?--]; married Clara E. KRANER.

             +   52      iv.    Elizabeth GIMBEL, born 29 March 1864 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana; married Henry GREEN.

                  53       v.    Martin GIMBEL was born 30 September 1866 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  He died 1 March 1919 in Union City at age 52 and was buried 3 March 1919 in Union City Cemetery. According to his obituary, Martin worked for a short time at the Union City Carriage Factory but by 1910 had opened his East Elm Street blacksmith shop which he ran for 25 years. He lived in a room in the back of his blacksmith workshop. Martin never married.

                  54      vi.    Lewis GIMBEL was born 6 October 1868 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  He died 1 April 1957 in Union City at age 88 and was buried 4 April 1957 in Lisbon Cemetery, Union City. Lewis operated a blacksmith shop in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana for several years. He never married.

             +   55     vii.    Ellen GIMBEL, born 31 March 1871 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana; married Adolphus ‘Adolph’ Herman BRACKMIER.

                  56    viii.    George GIMBEL was born 16 September 1873 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  He died in 1874 in Union City at age 1 and was buried in Old Lisbon Cemetery in that city.

                  57      ix.    Peter GIMBEL was born 20 February 1875 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. He was a blacksmith and in 1900 lived in a hotel run by Nelson J. Rose in Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana when he met Elmeretta ‘Retta’ BARR, a cook in the hotel. They married 16 September 1900.  Retta, a Quaker, was born 5 March 1873 in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of Godfrey Judy and Mary Ann Brindle. She married William Barr 28 December 1886 in Union City, Indiana and when he died she moved to Hartford City.  Peter and Retta settled in Pike Township, Jay County, Indiana and Peter took up farming.  Retta died 2 December 1921 in Jay County, Indiana at age 48, and was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Union City.  Peter then moved back to Union City and operated a blacksmith shop. He died 15 October 1954 in Union City at age 79, and was buried in Lisbon Cemetery.

                  58       x.    Baby GIMBEL was born in February 1878 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  He died in February 1878 in Union City and was buried in Old Lisbon Cemetery in that city.

                  59      xi.    Dora GIMBEL was born 23 March 1880 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  She married Alva M. WALKER 6 September 1911 in Indiana and they settled in Jackson Township, Darke County, Ohio.  Dora died 3 January 1933 in Union City at age 52, and was buried 7 January 1933 in Union City Cemetery. Alva was born in June 1879 in Indiana, the son of John G. and Sarah J. Walker. After Dora died in 1933, he supposedly married a woman from Greenville who had a daughter named Nancy. The wife died and Alva continued to live with the daughter. They did not marry but had a daughter who was put in a children's home near Greenville. Alva died 30 December 1951 in Ohio at age 72

 

     17.  Johann Friedrich⁴ HEUSS (Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 13 November 1840 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. In 1853 he came to America with his parents and three siblings, settling first in Marion County, Ohio and then in Mercer County, Ohio. At some point Johann Friedrich shortened his name to Fred and used the spelling ‘Heis’ for his surname. Fred served in the Civil War as a private in Company D, 62nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was the first person in Mercer County to put up his own ice for the summer in a pond near his home.  He was Evangelical and was an active member of the Bethel Church.

     Fred married Mary KRING 20 April 1862 in Darke County, Ohio. Mary was born 13 January 1842 in Franklin County, Ohio, the daughter of Leonard and Katharine Kring.  She died 1 January 1905 in Gibson Township, Mercer County at age 62. Fred died 7 June 1918 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 77.  He was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County.

     Known children of Johann Friedrich⁴ HEUSS/HEIS and Mary KRING, all born in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio, were as follows:

                  60       i.    Sarah Catharine⁵ HEUSS/HEIS was born 16 July 1863. She married Edward F. ULMER circa 1885 in Mercer County, Ohio and they had two children, both born in Mercer County: Minnie, born in October 1885, and Walter Leroy, born 13 May 1889. Walter married Mabel May BELLIS circa 1911 and they had a daughter Mary J. At the time Walter registered for the World War I draft he and his wife were living in Texhoma, Texas County, Oklahoma, and Walter worked as a merchant for Briggs and Briggs. In the 1930 census he, Mabel and Mary J. resided in Pittsburgh and he was a salesman.  Edward and Sarah resided in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. Edward was employed as a wood worker for a wagon maker in 1920 and in 1930 he was a helper in an auto manufacturing establishment.

     18.  Magdalene Friederike⁴ HEUSS (Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 31 March 1848 in Neckarweihingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. In 1853 she came to the United States with her parents and three siblings, settling first in Marion County, Ohio and then in Mercer County, Ohio and adopting the name Margaret. She died 23 July 1903 in New Pittsburg, Jay County, Indiana at age 55.

     Margaret married Jeremiah TOUMEY circa 1872 and they settled in Pike Township, Jay County, Indiana. Jeremiah was born in November 1841 in Ireland, the son of Timothy and Hanora Toumey.  He came to the United States with his family at the age of eight, or about 1849. A sister Anna emigrated and eventually married John Donahue and lived in Indianapolis in 1880.  Jeremiah died in 1925 in Indiana at age 84.

                  68     iii.    Sylvester Louis TOUMEY was born 10 February 1873 in Ohio. He married Adelaide J. WAGNER 30 September 1914 in Marion County, Indiana. She was born 2 November 1879 and died before 1920 in Indianapolis. Sylvester was a supervisor for Big Four Railroad.

TOUMEY was born 13 October 1886 in Jay County, Indiana.  In the 1920 census he was single and roomed in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio where he worked for Hatfield Electrical Company as an electrician at East Side High School. About 1928 he married Bertha [--?--] who was born 4 November 1886 in Indiana and died in March 1973 at age 86. John died in June 1978 In Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 91.

     21.  John M.⁵ BISCHOFF (Rosine Cathrine⁴ Mayer, Anna Maria³ Heuss, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born November 1869 in Jay County, Indiana and was a blacksmith.  He married Sarah THARP circa 1896 in Jay County, Indiana and in the 1900 census they resided in Salamonia, Jay County. Sarah was born in March 1876 in Indiana and was the daughter of Simeon and Ellen Tharp of Pike Township, Jay County.

     Known children of John M.⁵ BISCHOFF and Sarah THARP, both born in Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                  74       i.    Blanche M.⁶ BISCHOFF was born in July 1896.

                  75      ii.    John M. BISCHOFF was born in February 1898.

 

     22.  Rosena⁵ MAYERS/MAYER (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in October 1852 in Marion County, Ohio. She died 5 June 1939 in Marion County, Ohio at age 86.

     Rosena, who also went by the name Rosa, married Jacob D. LUST 31 March 1874 in Marion County, Ohio. He was born 8 August 1851 in Hohenwettersbach, Baden, Germany, the son of Jacob Lust and Anna M. Hoch. The family emigrated to the United States in 1853 and settled on a farm in Pleasant Township in Marion County. After marriage Jacob and Rosa lived for eight years on a 70-acre farm in Marion Township in Marion County. In 1882 Jacob sold this farm and bought a 151-acre farm in Grand Prairie Township. Later Jacob purchased another 80 acres in this township and was known for his fine hogs. Jacob was Grand Prairie Township trustee several terms and for three years assessor of the township. He was director and clerk of his school district and served as a member of the school board for a couple of decades. For six years he was a member of the Board of Infirmary Directors of Marion County.

                  76       i.    Albert Charles⁶ LUST was born circa 1875 and died 16 September 1961 in Marion County, Ohio.  He married Ivanella RUSH, who was known as Iva, circa 1907 in Marion County. Iva, the daughter of Philip and Laura B. Rush, was born in January 1879 in Marion County and had been married previously but had no children. She died 10 February 1959 in Marion, Marion County at age 79. Albert was listed as Charles A. in the 1900 census but his death record gives his name as Albert C.

                  77      ii.    Samuel Tilden LUST, also known as Tilden, was born circa 1877.  He died 8 January 1891 in Marion County, Ohio at age 14 of typhoid fever after an eight-day illness.

                  80       v.    Earl LUST was born circa 1881 and died circa 1882 in Marion County, Ohio.

                  82     vii.    Roma Edna LUST was born in August 1887. She married William Carl ULSH, known as Carl, circa 1907 in Marion County, Ohio. Carl was born 7 May 1884 in Marion County, the son of William Winfield Ulsh and Mary L. Daley. He and Roma resided in the city of Marion, Marion County in the 1910 census and Carl was a streetcar conductor. Roma died 22 October 1910 at age 23 and in the 1920 federal census  Carlwas enumerated as age 35, single, streetcar conductor, a lodger in the home of Leon Thompson in Marion. Carl married circa 1912 Alda Mae Cover, who also married for the second time. Alda, the daughter of John and Marie Cover, was born in March 1884, likely in Morrow County, Ohio. In 1930 the couple resided in Claridon Township, Marion County and Carl was a farmer. He died 3 June 1958 in Marion County at age 74, and was buried in Marion Cemetery. Alda died at age 92 on 13 December 1976 in Crawford County, Ohio

 

     23.  Caroline⁵ MAYERS/MAYER (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 28 November 1855 in Marion County, Ohio.  She died 4 March 1939 in Jay County, Indiana at age 83.

     Caroline married Tobias THEURER 18 December 1879. Tobias, born 1 May 1856 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, was the son of Matthaus Theurer and Sarah Kurtz. His brother John George married Caroline’s sister Louise. (See #27 below) Tobias died 15 June 1924 at age of 68.

     24.  John⁵ MYERS (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born circa 1859 in Marion County, Ohio and appeared to have used the Myers spelling for his surname.  He married Louisa KAUFFMAN circa 1885 in Marion County, Ohio. Louise was born in February 1856 in Ohio, the daughter of Jacob and Ann M. Kauffman of Claridon Township, Marion County. Her father was born in Wurttemberg and her mother in Darmstadt, Germany.

     Known children of John⁵ MYERS and Louisa KAUFFMAN, all born in Marion County, Ohio, were as follows:

Florence was born 18 January 1890 in Ohio, and died 19 July 1979 at age 89 in Marion County. In the 1920 federal census Carl and Florence resided in Pleasant Township, Marion County, and his parents, John and Loyise, were in the household with them.

     25.  William⁵ MAYERS (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in October 1860 in Marion County, Ohio and appears to have used both the Mayers surname spelling and Mayer spelling. In Ohio Deaths 1938-1944 his surname is given as Mayer.  He married Helena LOYER 12 March 1889 in Marion County, Ohio. Helena, also known as Lena, was born in June 1866 in Ohio. William, a long-time resident of Richland Township, died 4 November 1944 in Marion County at age 84, and was buried in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Marion County.

                  96      iv.    William Edward MAYERS was born in February 1899. He was also known as Edward W. He married circa 1924 Matilda, whose likely name was Matilda Hannah Mollenhauer born 6 September 1902 in Shelby County, Ohio and died 20 January 1998 in Marion County at age 95. They had a son John E. In 1930 the family resided in Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio.

     26.  Christina⁵ MAYERS (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in February 1857 in Marion County, Ohio.  She married Valentine RADEL circa 1883 in Marion County, Ohio.

     Valentine RADEL was born in July 1857 in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1874.  He was naturalized in 1878.  Valentine and Christina and their family resided in Richland Township, Marion County.

     Known children of Christina⁵ MAYERS and Valentine RADEL, all born in Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, were as follows:

                  98       i.    Alice A.⁶ RADEL was born in July 1884.

                  99      ii.    Clara Edith RADEL was born 4 April 1886 and died 5 August 1960 in Marion County, Ohio at age 74. She married Elmer Lloyd KAELBER 23 September 1917 in Marion County. Elmer, the son of Jacob F. and Rachel E. (Gattshall) Kaelber, was born 26 February 1885 in Morrow County, Ohio, and died 11 July 1956 in Marion County at age 71. He was married first in 1910 to Clara Moyer, the daughter of Daniel and Catherine S. (Miller) Moyer who was born in June 1881 and died 27 July 1914 in Marion at age 33. Clara and Elmer had children Helen Louise, who married Arles C. PEAK who was born 25 July 1915 and died in Marion County 3 September 2000 at age 85; Mildred Ruth who married Earl Main; Oscar Alvin, born 10 May 1925 and died 13 July 1995 in Marion County at age 70; and Arthur R.

                100     iii.    Elmer RADEL was born 30 October 1889 and died 27 June 1965 in Marion County, Ohio at age 75. Circa 1914 he married Inez [--?--] who was born circa 1897. Their children were Catharine; Grace; Melvin L, born 14 June 1918 and died 23 January 1991 in Marion County at age 72; Hazel; Betty J.; Virginia, and Mary.

                102       v.    William C. RADEL was born in April 1893.  He died 11 October 1967 in Marion County, Ohio at age 74. William worked for Marion Steam Shovel Company.

     27.  Louise C.⁵ MAYERS (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 6 December 1861 in Marion County, Ohio, and died in November 1940 at age 78.

     She married John George THEURER 24 February 1886. John was born 7 August 1861 in Indiana, the son of Matthaus and Sarah (Kurtz) Theurer, and the brother of Tobias who married Louise’s sister Caroline. (See #23 above)  He died 31 August 1932 in Jay County at age 71.   

     Known children of Louise C.⁵ MAYERS and John G. THEURER, all born in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana were as follows:

     Charles married ANNA ULMER 1 December 1892 in Marion, Ohio. Anna was born in April 1869 in Ohio, the daughter of Jacob and Anna M. Ulmer of Richland Township, Marion County.

     Known children of Charles D.⁵ MAYERS and Anna ULMER, all born in Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, were as follows:

                109       i.    Harley A.⁶ MAYERS was born in September 1899.  He died 10 December 1976 in Marion County, Ohio at age 77.

     30.  Clara⁵ MAYERS (Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in May 1872 in Marion County, Ohio and died in that county 27 March 1967 at age 94.

     She married Edward W. MAUTZ circa 1895 in Marion County. He was born in March 1871 in Pleasant Township, Marion County, the son of John and Catharine Mautz.  His name was given as W. Edward in the 1920 census and as W.E. in the 1930 census.

     Known children of Clara⁵ MAYERS and Edward W. MAUTZ, all born in Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, were as follows:

                112       i.    Walter A.⁶ MAUTZ was born 2 May 1900 and died 26 October 1999 in Marion County, Ohio at age 99.

     33.  Christiane Friederike⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 March 1859 in Bowling Green Township, Marion County, Ohio. She died 22 April 1928 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at age 69, and was buried in Marion Cemetery, Marion, Ohio.

     Christiane married Joseph CREASAP, a carpenter, circa 1880. Joseph, the son of Daniel and Sarah (Culp) Creasap, was born 3 May 1860 in Marion County, Ohio, and died 14 August 1929 in Columbus at age 69.  He was buried in Marion Cemetery.

     Known children of Christiane Friederike⁵ HEUSS and Joseph CREASAP were as follows:

                115       i.    Cora Alva⁶ CREASAP was born 4 March 1882 in Marion County, Ohio. About 1906 she married Charles W. BURLEY, an executive with Eastman Kodak, and they lived in Rochester, New York. They had no children. Charles was born circa 1882 in Ohio.

          +   116      ii.    Chester Grover CREASAP, born 2 October 1884 in Ohio; married Catherine PICKENS.

                117     iii.    Louise Christine CREASAP was born 26 May 1887 in Marion County, Ohio and died circa 1947. Louise married John S. CHANDLER and they lived in Detroit, Michigan. They had no children. John was born circa 1887 in Maryland.

                118      iv.    Mary Alveda CREASAP was born 20 June 1900 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. She married Charles Walter BURNS circa 1928 and they lived first in Louisville, Kentucky, and later Chicago, Illinois. They had two children. Charles was born circa 1898 in Ohio.

 

     35.  Louisa⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 30 August 1862 in Jay County, Indiana.  She died in 1944 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 82. Louisa married Frederick John VEIT circa 1881 in Indiana. Fred, as he was called, was born in March 1859 in Indiana, and died in 1943 in Union City at age 84. Proprietor of a meat market, he was the brother of Henry Veit who married Louisa’s sister Rosina. (See #36 below) Both men were described as dealers in fresh meats in the 1900 federal census. Their parents were John, of Wurttemberg, and Anna, of Hanover, Veit. This family was in Jackson Township, Darke County, Ohio in the 1860 census, but by 1870 resided in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. Louisa and Fred lived in Union City.

     Known children of Louisa⁵ HEUSS and Frederick John VEIT were as follows:

                119       i.    Lydia Ann⁶ VEIT was born 6 November 1882 in Indiana.  She died 6 October 1979 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 96, and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Lydia never married.

                120      ii.    Edith Mary VEIT was born 27 January 1885 in Indiana and died 6 October 1968 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 83.  She was buried in Union City Cemetery. Edith never married.

     36.  Rosina⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 13 September 1864 in Jay County, Indiana. She died 19 May 1942 in Indiana at age 77, and was buried in Union City Cemetery, Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana.

     Rosa, as she was called, married Henry L. VEIT 16 March 1892 in Indiana. Henry was born March 1858 in Kentucky, according to the 1900 federal census, but he was found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses with an age that translates to a year of birth of circa 1853 and with a place of birth of Ohio. He died in 1908 and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Henry was the brother of Frederick John Veit who married Rosina’s sister Louise (See #35 above) and was described as a dealer in fresh meats in the 1900 census, just as Fred was.  Their parents were John, of Wurttemberg, and Anna, of Hanover, Viet. This family was in Jackson Township, Darke County, Ohio in the 1860 census, but by 1870 resided in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana.

     Known children of Rosina⁵ HEUSS and Henry L. VEIT were as follows:

                123       i.    Pauline L.⁶ VEIT was born in 1893 in Texas. It is not known why her parents went to that distant state, but by 1900 they were back in Randolph County, Indiana.  Pauline was a music student and attended Northwestern University. She never married and died circa 1920 in Union City, Randolph County. Pauline was buried in Union City Cemetery.

 

     37.  Ludwig Friedrich Peter⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 1 January 1867 in Jay County, Indiana. He died 5 April 1953 in Randolph County, Indiana at age 86, and was buried in Union City Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana. He was called Peter by family and friends and his name appears as Lewis P. on his headstone.

     Peter married Minnie L. ANDERS 13 March 1895 in Indiana. Minnie, the daughter of Sylvester Walter and Mary E. (Clear) Anders, was born 22 December 1873 in Randolph County, Indiana, and died 11 June 1963 in that county at age 89.  She was buried in Union City Cemetery. Her first cousin Letitia Woodbury was the wife of Peter’s brother Charles. (See #40 below)

     Known children of Ludwig Friedrich Peter⁵ HEUSS and Minnie L. ANDERS were as follows:

                124       i.    Marvin Paul⁶ HEUSS was born 15 April 1896 in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. He died 5 September 1934 at age 38, and was buried in Union City Cemetery, Randolph County. Marvin married Dora M. BARRICK in 1923 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio. She was born 11 March 1902 in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.  Dora died 12 September 1934 in Darke County, Ohio at age 32, and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Marvin and Dora had a daughter Margot Ellen likely born in Butler County, Ohio where Marvin and Dora resided in the 1930 census. With her parents' early deaths she was reared by her Heuss grandparents. Marvin was a bridge foreman for a steam railroad in the 1930 census.

                125      ii.    Florence Theresa HEUSS was born 29 July 1898 in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana, and died January 1988 at age 89. Her last known residence was Winchester in Randolph County. Florence married Lawrence F. SIPE 17 March 1921. He was born 23 February 1898 in Randolph County, Indiana, the son of Franklin P. and Harriet (Murphy) Sipe. Lawrence died 18 December 1980 in Randolph County at age 82, and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Florence and Lawrence had a son and a daughter.

                126     iii.    Walter Frederick HEUSS was born 19 September 1902 in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. He died 27 November 1958 in Randolph County at age 56, and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Walter married Blanch A. THOMAS 17 May 1924. Blanch, the daughter of Frank and Millie Thomas, was born 25 May 1904.  She died 24 October 1994 in Indiana at age 90, and was buried in Union City Cemetery. Her last known residence was Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. Walter and Blanch had two sons.

                127      iv.    Herman Albert HEUSS was born 11 March 1906 in Darke County, Ohio. He died 1 September 1992 in Indiana at age 86.  His last known residence was Ninevah, Johnson County, Indiana. Herman married G. Lucille JENKINS 26 March 1925 in Indiana. The daughter of John and Gertrude Victoria (Cox) Jenkins, Lucille was born 9 February 1906 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.  She died 22 March 1994 in Indiana at age 88. Her last known residence was Edinburgh, Johnson County, Indiana. Herman and his wife had four children.

                128       v.    Evelyn Dorothea HEUSS was born 13 April 1910 in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. She died in 1912 in that county at age 2.

 

     40.  Karl Wilhelm⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹), called Charles William, was born 28 December 1871 in Jay County, Indiana.  He married Letitia Romoline WOODBURY, the daughter of Daniel and Susanna (Clear) Woodbury, 30 September 1896 in Indiana. In the 1900 federal census Charles was a bridge carpenter. He moved his family to Indianapolis in 1903 and there he held the position of building and bridge superintendent with the New York Central Railroad until 1958 when he retired and moved to his son Charles’ home in Rochester, Monroe County, New York.  He died 14 January 1961 in Rochester at age 89.  Charles was buried in Washington Park Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

     Letitia was born 22 March 1876 in Randolph County, Indiana.  She died 15 September 1946 in Indianapolis at age 70, and was buried in Washington Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.  Her first cousin Minnie Anders was the wife of Charles’ brother Peter. (See #37 above)

     Known children of Karl Wilhelm⁵ HEUSS and Letitia Romoline WOODBURY were as follows:

                129       i.    Sarah Esther.⁶ HEUSS was born 1 February 1898 in Jay County, Indiana.  She died 17 April 1958 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 60. Esther, as she was sometimes known, married Grady W. CLINE 3 April 1926. He was born 2 February 1897 in Tennessee and died in July 1979 in Indianapolis at age 82.

                130      ii.    Charles Clarence HEUSS was born 8 September 1906 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana and died 10 November 1992 at age 86. He married Martha Lucille PERSHING 27 May 1933 in Indianapolis. Martha was born 14 September 1910 in Odon, Daviess County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of Solomon Edward and Martha Jane (Freeman) Pershing.

 

     41.  Johannes Tobias⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 22 February 1874 in Jay County, Indiana. As a young man John, as he was called, went to Michigan to work in a lumber camp. He later took up farming.

     John married Mary Ann MONTGOMERY 19 November 1902 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. Mary Ann was born 14 April 1873 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada.  She was the daughter of William Montgomery of Ireland, a guard for Queen Victoria who spent many years in India, and Mary Hardman of London England who supposedly was in the Court of Queen Victoria and as a child played with the Queen. William received a land grant in Canada for his services in the British Army.  According to the wedding announcement from the newspaper, Mary Ann was a graduate nurse of the New York State Training School and a member of the Friends Church. John owned a farm southwest of Traverse City where they resided until they moved to Whittier, Los Angeles County, California in 1941. Mary died 12 March 1946 in Whittier at age 72.  She was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.  John died 14 December 1949 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio at age 75. At the time of his death he was in Akron visiting his son.  John was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park.

     Known children of Johannes Tobias⁵ HEUSS and Mary Ann MONTGOMERY, both born in Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, were as follows:

                131       i.    Vivian Alveda⁶ HEUSS was born 4 June 1908.  She died in February 1988 in California at age 79. Vivian married Jesse Mahlon HARVEY 31 August 1929 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois and they had a son and a daughter.          Jesse, the son of Austice and Rosa (Brewer) Harvey, was born 25 July 1897 in Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana.  He died 25 April 1976 in Hemet, Riverside County, California, at age 78, and was buried in San Jacinto Valley Cemetery, Hemet. From 1933 to 1938 Jesse was American Representative for the American Friends Service Committee and Friends Service Council of London. Prior to his retirement he was a counselor for the California Youth Authority and a professor of French at Whittier College. He was one of the founders of the Quaker Book Collection at the college.

                132      ii.    John Sanford HEUSS was born 12 April 1912. He died 11 July 1982 in Greensboro, Guildford County, North Carolina at age 70, and was buried in Union City Cemetery, Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. John married Lois Ione HOTCHKISS 28 January 1940 in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. Lois was born 7 May 1904 in Urbana.  She died 31 December 1999 in North Carolina at age 95. John and Lois had a son.

 

     42.  Mathius Jakob⁵ HEUSS (Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 February 1876 in Jay County, Indiana.  He died 27 November 1970 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan at age 94, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Traverse County.

     Jacob, as he was known, moved to Traverse City in 1895 for his hay fever. He was employed as a locomotive engineer by the Pere Marquette Railroad from 1898 to his retirement in 1943.

     Jacob married Anna MERRILL 24 September 1902 in Traverse City. Anna, the daughter of Lewis A. Merrill and Elizabeth Tucker, was born 10 March 1879 in Indiana and died 23 May 1972 in Traverse City at age 93.  She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

     Known children of Mathius Jakob⁵ HEUSS and Anna MERRILL, all born in Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, were as follows:

                133       i.    Merrill William⁶ HEUSS was born 6 August 1904.  He died 20 April 1988 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at age 83. Merrill married Louise PEARSON 6 July 1929 in Evanston, Cook County, Illinois. Louise, born 27 May 1905, was the daughter of Nels and Matilda Louise (Ringholm) Pearson.  She died in October 1984 at age 79. Merrill and Louise had two sons.

                134      ii.    Richard Herman HEUSS was born 23 October 1906.  He died 12 March 1989 in Iowa at age 82. Richard married Geneva Alice ROBERTS 23 February 1931 in Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan. Geneva, the daughter of Richard Willis and Louisa (Mauska) Roberts, was born 2 September 1908 in Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa.  She died in January 1991 at age 82. Richard and Geneva had two sons.

                135     iii.    Raymond Lewis HEUSS was born 25 December 1907 and died 6 October 1978 in Durango, La Plata County, Colorado at age 70.  He was buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Durango. Raymond married Alice Antoni RATHNOW 22 June 1935 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Alice was born 20 January 1910 in Chicago.  She died in June 1995 in Colorado at age 85, and was buried in Green Mount Cemetery. Raymond and Alice had a son.

                136      iv.    Gladys M. HEUSS was born 1 August 1912 and died 11 June 1998 in Michigan at age 85.  She married Peter Joseph VANDERLIP in 1935.  Peter died in 1960. Gladys and Peter had a son.

                137       v.    Leon Albert HEUSS was born 13 January 1915 and died 21 September 1953 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at age 38.  He was buried in Union Cemetery in Columbus.  Leon married Delores CARMELL 27 January 1945 in Columbus and they had a son and daughter. Delores was born 29 June 1919 in Columbus, the daughter of Elmer M. and Cleo Eleanor (Brown) Carmell.

                138      vi.    Louise HEUSS was born 16 November 1918.  She married John Ovid DANT 3 September 1942. John was born 14 February 1912 and died 15 January 1975 at age 62.  Louise then married Milton Wyman HEISEL 1 May 1976 in Naperville, Du Page County, Illinois.  Milton was born 22 June 1913 and died 19 January 1999 in Florida at age 85.

                139     vii.    Jacob Kenneth HEUSS was born 11 January 1920 and died 15 March 2000 in Michigan at age 80. Jacob married Louise WYGANT 3 July 1948 in Michigan. Louise was born 2 June 1926 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, the daughter of Nelson Earl and Veronica Margaret (Murray) Wygant.  She died 28 July 2001 in Michigan at age 75.

 

     46.  Charles⁵ WORTZ (Esther⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 27 September 1864 in Jay County, Indiana. He died 12 February 1900 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 35, and was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.

     About 1885 Charles married S. Ella WARNOCK, called Ella, who was born in November 1866 in Ohio. In the 1900 census she was enumerated with her children in the household of her parents Sanford and Jane Warnick [sic] in Recovery Township, Mercer County, Ohio.  On 10 August 1901 in Jay County Ella married Sanford M. Pearson and they had a son Gerald, born circa 1904. Sanford, as he was enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 censuses (enumerated as Samuel M. in the 1900 and 1930), was born in September 1876 in Ohio. His marriage to Ella was his first.  Sanford was the manager of a grain elevator in Fort Recovery, Ohio in 1920 and a cement contractor in 1930.

     Known children of Charles⁵ WORTZ and S. Ella WARNOCK, all born in Indiana, were as follows:

                140       i.    Pearl Arlington⁶ WORTZ was born in August 1887 and died in November 1983 in Ohio at age 96. He was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. Pearl, a farmer, married Alice R. GRILE 10 March 1906 in Jay County. Alice was born 26 September 1889 and died in June 1973 in Ohio at age 83. They had three children, all born in Jay County, Indiana.  Mildred E. was born 18 September 1906 and died in February 1985 in Jay County at age 78. She married Merle SCHOLER who was born 3 May 1902 in Indiana and died in December 1980 in Jay County at age 78. Ione Delee was born 10 January 1908 and died in 14 April 1991 in Van Wert County, Ohio. She married Donald H. HILDBOLD circa 1928. Donald, who was the manager of a grocery in the 1930 census, was born 4 August 1905 in Ohio and died in April 1987 at age 81. His last known residence was Convoy, Van Wert County. Charles Melvin was born 31 March 1909 and died 25 April 1991 In Mercer County at age 82. He was an automobile mechanic. Charles married Hazel Viola MCLAUGHLIN who was born 28 October 1911 in Indiana and died 14 November 1998 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 87.

                141      ii.    Charles Glenwood WORTZ, enumerated as Glenn C. in the 1910 census, was born in September 1891. He may have died in 1916.

                142     iii.    Carrie Cleo WORTZ was born 14 September 1895 and died 14 February 1993 at age 97. She was enumerated as Cleo in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses. Cleo married [--?--] CULL after 1930.

 

     48.  Katharine⁵ WORTZ (Esther⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in July 1871 in Jay County, Indiana and married William YOUNG 7 December 1895 in Jay County. William was born in June 1874 in Ohio. He and Katie, as she was called, resided in Noble Township, Jay County where William farmed.

     Known children of Catharine⁵ WORTZ and William YOUNG, all born in Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                143       i.    Ernest F.⁶ YOUNG was born in March 1897.

                144      ii.    Erma F. YOUNG was born in November 1899.

                            iii.    Clarence YOUNG was born circa 1903

                            iv.    Ruth YOUNG was born 13 February 1907 and died 12 August 1992 in Van Wert County, Ohio at age 85. She married [--?--] WILSON. At the time of her death she resided in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio.

 

     49.  William⁵ GIMBEL (Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 3 December 1856 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio.  He was christened 24 February 1924 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  William died 25 August 1941 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 84. He had been seriously ill with dropsy for some time and on the day of his death he asked his daughter Hazel to bring him his knife collection.  He then used one of the knives to stab himself in the abdomen in an attempt to ease the pain from swelling and bloating caused by his illness.  The cause of death on his death certificate was a self-inflicted stab wound to the abdomen.  William was buried 28 August 1941 in Union City Cemetery.

     William was a blacksmith and first practiced that trade in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana where he appeared in the 1880 census.  He was listed in an 1887 Salamonia city directory as one of two blacksmiths doing business in that community and continued to reside there in 1900.  According to William’s youngest daughter Florence, he built a blacksmith shop on the east side of the very end of North Howard Street in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana and lived in the upstairs of the shop with his family while their house was being built.  When the shop was built is not known but in 1908 William was listed in the Union City Directory as a blacksmith living at 814 North Howard Street with his wife Mary and minor children George, Clarence and Hazel. William at one time owned a buggy shop, but it went out of business when gasoline-powered automobiles became popular.  During World War II, when gasoline was rationed, he built horse-pulled milk delivery wagons.

     William married Mary Magdalena KRANER, daughter of tannery owner George Adam Kraner and his wife Caroline Eberhart, on 13 December 1881 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. Mary was born 22 February 1863 in Marion, Marion County, Ohio, and died 12 June 1946 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 83. The cause of her death was acute endocarditis due to arteriosclerosis.  Mary was buried 15 June 1946 in Union City Cemetery.

          +   148      iv.    Irvin Frank GIMBEL, born 1 October 1888 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana; married Mary Kyle RIDDLEBARGER.

          +   149       v.    Hazel Dora GIMBEL, born 5 February 1891 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana; married Ross Franklyn BAREFOOT.

                150      vi.    George Adam GIMBEL was born 13 June 1895 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  He died 9 May 1952 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 56 and was buried 12 May 1952 in Union City Cemetery, Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. George, who never married, was a horseshoer in Company E, 309^th Engineers in World War I and served overseas in France where he was gassed. According to Mary (Barefoot) Hansen, his niece, he felt the effects of the gassing for the remainder of his life and became a heavy drinker to manage the pain and disability.  He was left with a limp from a compound fracture of the leg suffered in a car wreck after a night of drinking.  George was a blacksmith, however, by 1930, when he was living with his sister Hazel and family in Dayton, Ohio, he was an assembler at National Cash Register.

                151     vii.    Clarence Otto GIMBEL was born 22 May 1901 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  He died 10 December 1965 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 64 and was buried 13 December 1965 in Lisbon Cemetery, Union City. Clarence worked as a blacksmith and machinist and resided at the old family homestead at the corner of Route 28 and North Howard Street in Union City. Clarence married Anna Flossie PETERSON 16 November 1946 in Union City. Anna was born 22 July 1893 in Indiana and died 28 September 1989 in Union City at age 96.  She was buried 2 October 1989 in Lisbon Cemetery beside her husband Clarence and her parents Scott and Rosa. Clarence and Anna had no children.

          +   152    viii.    Florence Marie GIMBEL, born 30 July 1903 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana; married Ray Emerson TODD.

 

     51.  Henry⁵ GIMBEL (Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 October 1862 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio.  He died 22 February 1947 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at age 84, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Miami County, Ohio.

     As a young man Henry was a blacksmith and worked on carriages. In the 1910 federal census he was enumerated as superintendent of a buggy company in Columbus.  By the 1920 census he was a die maker in a factory in Franklin County, and in 1930 he was an inspector for a bolt manufacturing company in Columbus. 

     Henry had three wives. He married first Ella MORRIS circa 1894. Ella was born in July 1861 in Ohio and died around 1902, probably in Franklin County, Ohio. Circa 1903, likely in Columbus, Henry married Lillian E. [--?--] who was born circa 1881 in Ohio and was a nurse. The couple divorced some time around 1911 and Henry married his sister-in-law Clara E. KRANER, the daughter of George Adam and Caroline (Eberhart) Kraner and sister of Mary Magdalena Kraner who married Henry’s brother William Gimbel. (See #49 above).  Clara was born 28 July 1865 in Bowling Green Township, Marion County, Ohio. She married first George WENDELL 22 April 1889 in Jay County, Indiana. George was born 19 November 1863 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1866 with his parents Peter and Margaret Wendell. George was a carriage maker who suffered from seizures, and after nine years of declining health was placed in the epileptic hospital in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio in late 1909. He died there 14 February 1910 at age 46, and was buried in Green Mound Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. Clara and George had two children but they both died in infancy, according to George’s obituary. After George’s death Clara resided in Celina, Mercer County, until her marriage to Henry. Clara died 17 December 1946 in Columbus at age 81 and was buried next to Henry in Riverside Cemetery. The couple had no children.

     Known children of Henry⁵ GIMBEL and Ella MORRIS were as follows:

     Known children of Henry GIMBEL and Lillian E. [--?--] were as follows.  

                154       i.    Sylvia⁶ GIMBEL was born circa January 1909 in Ohio. When her parents divorced, her father Henry received custody of Sylvia. In the 1930 census she was living with Henry and his wife Clara and was a stenographer for a mail order house.  Sylvia had a daughter Nancy Clara who supposedly married a [--?--] Sanborn and resided in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. She may be the Nancy C. Sanborn in the Social Security Death Index born 16 February 1932 and died 27 May 2003, last known residence Palmetto, Manatee County, Florida.

 

     52.  Elizabeth⁵ GIMBEL (Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 29 March 1864 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. She died 11 October 1938 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 74, and was buried 15 October 1938 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

     Lizzie, as she was called, married Henry GREEN, a cabinet maker, circa 1890 in Indiana. Henry was born in December 1848 in  Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.  He was married previously to Dora [--?--], born circa 1854 while at sea as her parents traveled from Hesse-Darmstadt to the United States. Dora and Henry appeared in the 1880 census in Indianapolis with sons Harry, age 5, and Ernest, age 1. They also had a son George, however he may be the son listed as Ernest in the 1880 census. Dora died 4 December 1881 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. According to Elizabeth’s 1938 obituary, stepson George lived in Indianapolis and stepson Harry resided in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan.

     Known children of Elizabeth⁵ GIMBEL and Henry Green were as follows:

                155       i.    Albert W.⁶ GREEN was born 22 June 1891 in Indiana.  He died in January 1963 at age 71. According to his mother's obituary he resided in Muskegon, Michigan in 1938.

                159       v.    Leona G. GREEN was born 15 December 1905 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  She married first Arthur L. GRAY circa 1925 in Indiana.  He was born circa 1898 in Tennessee and in the 1930 federal census the couple resided in Indianapolis. Leona later married [--?--] MOORE. Moore was her surname when she died 26 December 1997 in Indiana at age 92. Her last known residence was Indianapolis.

 

     55.  Ellen⁵ GIMBEL (Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 31 March 1871 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  She died 1 August 1950 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 79, and was buried 4 August 1950 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

     Ella, as she was called, married Adolphus ‘Adolph’ Herman BRACKMIER 25 December 1898 in Indiana. Adolph, a butcher, was born in 1863 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died in November 1940 in Indianapolis at age 77.  He was buried 29 November 1940 in Crown Hill Cemetery. Adolph was the son of Eliza of Germany who was either divorced or widowed by 1870 as she was enumerated in the federal census for that year as Eliza Brackmur, a domestic servant, residing in the household of William H. and Charlotte Sander in Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana. She was age 40 and born in Kentucky as were the children with her: Ernest, age 9; Adolphus, age 6, and Helena, age 2. In the 1880 census the family was still residing in Hope, and Eliza was enumerated as Eliza Brockmire, head of household, age 50, born in Germany, and her children were August, age 18, Adolph, age 16, and Lena, age 12, all born in Kentucky.

     Known children of Ellen⁵ GIMBEL and Adolph Herman BRACKMIER, all born in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, were as follows:

                162       i.    Adolph Jr.⁶ BRACKMIER was born 10 February 1900 and died in June 1968 in Indianapolis at age 68.  He was buried 18 June 1968 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Adolph never married.

                163      ii.    Gladys H. BRACKMIER was born 27 May 1902. She died 24 August 1962 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 60, and was buried 27 August 1962 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Gladys graduated from Indiana University and received a Masters degree in geology and mineralogy from Columbia University in New York City. She taught high school in the Auburn, Indiana public school system and was a member of the Columbia University geology department staff for 10 years, but returned to Indianapolis upon the death of her parents to keep house for her bachelor brothers. She also never married. Gladys participated in the site location of Norris Dam in Tennessee. She helped in site locations of several other dams and reservoirs built by the Tennessee Valley Authority, as well as dams in several Rocky Mountain states. Gladys worked on the Grand Coulee Dam and irrigation and flood control in the Sacramento Valley in California. She was a member of the Indiana Academy of Science, the New York chapter of Sigma Xi honorary scientific society, and the New York Academy of Science.

                164     iii.    Ernest F. BRACKMIER was born 8 July 1906 and died in September 1984 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, at age 78.  He was buried 14 September 1984 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Ernest never married.

                165      iv.    Herbert W. BRACKMIER was born 29 June 1909. He died in October 1986 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 77, and was buried 15 October 1986 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Herbert was considered an artist of some talent. He supposedly was married for the first time when he was over 70 years of age to a woman named Beverly. A Beverly J. Brackmier died 31 October 2000 in Indianapolis at age 79 according to the Social Security Death Index. This woman was born 24 September 1921 and was very likely Herbert’s wife as Brackmier is an exceedingly uncommon name.

 

     61.  Emma Sophia⁵ HEUSS (Johann Friedrich⁴, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 22 October 1867 in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio.  She died 24 September 1943 in Mercer County at age 75.

     Emma married Harvey Marion BROCK 11 November 1886 in Mercer County.  He was born 10 March 1863 in Darke County, Ohio and died 31 July 1943 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 80. His parents were Daniel and Jemima Anna (Weaver) Brock.

     Known children of Emma Sophia⁵ HEUSS and Harvey Marion BROCK were as follows:

                166       i.    Elmer E.⁶ BROCK was born 16 January 1887 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 16 June 1970 at age 83. He was buried in Swamp Cemetery, Mercer County. Elmer’s last known residence was Celina in Mercer County. On 12 February 1912 Elmer married Rhoda Armellia ‘Nellie’ STETLER who was born 19 November 1893, the daughter of Joel and Katherine Sophia (Burris) Stetler. She died 13 May 1987 at age 93 and was buried in Swamp Cemetery. Elmer and Nellie had daughters Wanda Maxine and Rose Ann.

                167      ii.    Floyd Frederick BROCK was born 8 October 1896 in Mercer County, Ohio.  He died at age 91 on 16 December 1987 in Fort Pierce, Saint Lucie County, Florida, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County. Floyd married Nora Alice LOWE 23 February 1921 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Nora was born 24 August 1895 in Mercer County and died 14 July 1974 in Fort Pierce, Florida at age 78. She was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.

 

     63.  Edward Herman⁵ HEIS (Johann Friedrich⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 20 August 1874 in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio. He used the spelling Heis for his surname.  Edward died 19 May 1960 in Mercer County at age 85, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County. He was a farmer and by 1930 a laborer in a feed mill.

     Edward married Martha Alice LOWRY, the daughter of John and Louisa (Wagner) Lowry, 7 April 1900 in Mercer County. She was born 2 April 1876 in Ohio, and went most often by the name Alice. She died 3 May 1956 in Ohio at age 80, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.

     Known children of Edward Herman⁵ HEIS and Martha Alice LOWRY, both born in Mercer County, Ohio, were as follows:

                168       i.    Esther Loree⁶ HEIS was born 5 July 1902 and died 22 April 1986 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio at age 83. She married first Alvin K. HEIBY, the son of George and Ada Heiby, 15 June 1932. Alvin was born 20 June 1904 and died 24 November 1953 at age 49. Esther then married Clarence W. OEHRTMAN 25 November 1958. He was born 21 February 1895, the son of John W. and Mary E. Oehrtman, and died 9 March 1979 in Kettering, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 84. Esther and Clarence lived in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio.

                169      ii.    Ronald Wayne HEIS was born 7 March 1907 and died 2 October 1972 at age 65. He was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.  Ronald married 4 June 1933 Millie Adeline SELLERS, the daughter of  Orville and Mabel S. Sellers, in Mercer County. Millie was born 12 January 1911 in Sandusky County, Ohio, and died 29 September 1994 in Jay County, Indiana at age 83. She was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery. Their children were Nelda Jeanine, Phyllis Joan, Norman Dean and Lelah Nadine.

 

     64.  Nora Leona⁵ HEUSS (Johann Friedrich⁴, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 10 August 1878 in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio. She died 7 October 1965 in Mercer County at age 87, and was buried in Green Mound Cemetery in that county.

     Nora married first 10 June 1905 Delphos Elra MOTT, the son of Abraham and Sarah (Travis) Mott. Delphos was born in May 1877 in Ohio and died 2 February 1924 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 46. He was a school teacher, a farmer, and at the time of his death manager of the Fort Recovery Equity Elevator. Delphos was buried in Green Mound Cemetery.

     Nora married second Charles MILLER in 1935 in Ohio.

     Known children of Nora Leona⁵ HEUSS and Delphos Elra MOTT, all born in Mercer County, Ohio, were as follows:

                170       i.    Milo Roger⁶ MOTT was born 6 June 1906.  He died 24 February 1979 in Miami County, Ohio at age 72. Milo married Irene Beatrice RENCH and they lived in Gettysburg, Darke County, Ohio.  Irene was born 4 March 1908 and died 30 July 1990 in Darke County at age 82. Milo and Irene had two children.

                171      ii.    Vernon Adlai MOTT was born 5 March 1909 and died 10 February 1987 in Mercer County, Ohio at age 77. Vernon married Florence LEE in 1935 and they lived in Mercer County. They had two children.

                172     iii.    Marvin Lee MOTT was born 12 September 1910.  He died 8 December 2005 in Ohio at age 95, and was buried in Green Mound Cemetery. Marvin married Ruth Emeline BRYAN in 1937 and they lived in Mercer County. They had two children.

     There were no known children of Nora Leona⁵ Heuss and Charles Miller.

 

     65.  Alma Iola⁵ HEUSS (Johann Friedrich⁴, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 8 November 1880 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 7 August 1948 at age 67 in Lenawee County, Michigan.  Alma married Silas J. EMMONS 2 March 1901 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County.

     Silas was born in 1877, the son of John and Lizzie Emmons of Mercer County.  He was a farmer and in the census of 1910 he, Alma and their family were enumerated in Blissfield Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. In 1920 they resided in Fulton Township, Fulton County, Ohio and by 1930 were back in Michigan in Ogden Township, Lenawee County. Silas died 20 February 1961 in Fulton County, Ohio at age 83.

     Known children of Alma Iola⁵ HEUSS and Silas J. EMMONS were as follows:

                173       i.    Kenneth W.⁶ EMMONS was born 3 December 1901 in Mercer County, Ohio.  He died in April 1980 at age 78; his last known residence was Morenci, Lenawee County, Michigan. Kenneth married Leah Margaret SELL 26 June 1921 in Fairfield Township, Lenawee County. Leah, the daughter of Walter A. and Bertha E. Sell, was born 2 November 1901 in Michigan and died 20 February 1993 in that state at age 91.

                174      ii.    Vesta Lorene EMMONS was born 29 September 1904 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 4 July 1969 at age 64. Her last known residence was Munising, Alger County, Michigan. Vesta married Irvin Marshall REED 13 December 1923 in Lenawee County, Michigan. Known also as Marshall, he was born circa 1903 in Michigan. Their known children were Rex C., Howard W. and Irene L.

                175     iii.    Carl Edward EMMONS was born 3 August 1906 in Lenawee County, Michigan and died 23 September 2002 at age 96. His last known residence was Sand Creek, Lenawee County, Michigan. Carl married Pearl Louisa SMITH 16 June 1933 in Lenawee County. Pearl, the daughter of Nelson E. and Viola R. Smith, was born 7 November 1913 in Lenawee County and died 22 September 2007 at age 93.

                176      iv.    Gerald Rosingraves EMMONS was born 5 May 1908 in Lenawee County, Michigan.  He died 6 February 2003 at age 94; his last known residence was Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. Gerald married Gladys L. Rodesiler 23 August 1934 in Lenawee County, Michigan, Gladys, the daughter of Fred and Safrona M. Rodesiler, was born 29 November 1908 in Riga, Lenawee County, and died 14 November 1992 at age 83. They had a son.

                177       v.    Ansel Vivian EMMONS was born 8 September 1911 in Lenawee County, Michigan and died 25 August 1990 at age 78. He married Arlene Opal KING 5 October 1935 in Lenawee County, Michigan. Arlene, the daughter of Clare M. and Arla W. King, was born circa 1916 in Lenawee County

                178      vi.    Gertrude Elizabeth EMMONS was born 21 December 1913 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. She married Walter Stephen PHENECIE 15 October 1936 in Lenawee County, Michigan

                179     vii.    Leroy Alva EMMONS was born 21 April 1916 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. He married Doris Margaret REICHARDT 9 March 1937 in Fulton County, Ohio. Doris was born circa 1917 in Fulton County, the daughter of Carl and Leota Reichardt.

 

     67.  Emma Jane⁵ TOUMEY (Magdalene Friederike⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹), known as Jennie, was born 6 March 1873 in Darke County, Ohio. She died in 1959 at age 86.  Jennie married John Walker MCCOY 5 September 1909 in Jay County, Indiana and they resided in Portland in that county.

     John was born 17 April 1868 in Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri.  He was the son of William McCoy, an attorney who practiced in Portland, Jay County, and Catherine Leonard. John was proprietor of a pool room in the 1910 census. According to his obituary, as a young man he worked as a clerk in the Eyman grocery store and after three years began clerking at the Wilson grocery store, where he remained for a number of years. He then became connected with a restaurant in Portland, and eventually aligned himself with a bakery business. The 1930 census gave his occupation as a salesman in a secondhand store.

     Known children of Emma Jane⁵ TOUMEY and John W. MCCOY, all born in Portland, Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                180       i.    John T.⁶ MCCOY was born 17 July 1910 and died 5 August 1996 in Indiana at age 86. His last known residence was Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

                181      ii.    Mary Catherine MCCOY was born 6 May 1914 and died 30 August 2004 at age 90 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. She married James Gordon MEEKER 2 July 1937. James, the son of Frederick Edward and Grace E. (Ware) Meeker, was born 25 September 1910 in Portland, and died 24 April 2003 in that city at age 92. Both Mary and James were buried in Green Park Cemetery, Jay County.

                182     iii.    Margaret Jane MCCOY was born 26 March 1918.

 

     69.  William Henry⁵ TOUMEY (Magdalene Friederike⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 19 January 1875 in Indiana and died 11 April 1938 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 55.  About 1904 he married Emma Susan WOODRING who was born 6 September 1881 in Indiana and died at age 92 in June 1974 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona.  She was the daughter of Jacob R. and Ophelia F. (Garringer) Woodring. William was a blacksmith in the 1910 census in Saratoga, Randolph County, Indiana. On his 1918 Draft Registration Card he listed his employer as W.H. Williams and Sons in Parker, Randolph County, and he was a blacksmith. In 1920 he worked in an auto body shop in Union City, Randolph County, and in 1930 he resided in Dayton, ohio and was a door hanger for an auto company.

                183       i.    Eugene Frederick⁶ TOUMEY was born 3 May 1905 in Indiana and died 13 August 1963 at age 65 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. Circa 1926 he married Lola Evelyn UTTER who was born circa 1908 in Ohio. They are known to have had a daughter Ruth E. In the 1930 federal census the family resided in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan where Frederick, as he was enumerated, was an assembler in an auto factory.

                184      ii.    Margaret Eleanor TOUMEY was born 14 August 1907 in Indiana.

                185     iii.    Hanora Agnes TOUMEY was born 27 February 1911 in Randolph County, Indiana and died in July 1987 at age 76 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. She married Robert Irving LACE who was born 22 February 1899 and died in August 1977 in Tucson at age 78.

                186      iv.    Gladys Jane TOUMEY was born 11 November 1913 in Randolph County, Indiana. She died 15 May 1968 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona at age 54. Gladys married John Weaver DOWNING who was born 3 August 1910 and died in June 1986 in Tucson at age 75.

                187       v.    Maurice Jeremiah TOUMEY, a twin, was born 2 July 1918 in Randolph County, Indiana.  He died in August 1973 at age 55 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona.

                188      vi.    Merle Jacob TOUMEY, a twin, was born 2 July 1918 in Randolph County, Indiana.  He died 6 June 1973 at age 54 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. Merle married June Juanita LEIS 1 May 1940. June was born 11 June 1922 in Miamisburg, Montgomery County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Paul R. and Bertha N. Leis.

 

     70.  Frederick⁵ TOUMEY (Magdalene Friederike⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹), known as Fred, was born 12 May 1882 in Jay County, Indiana.  He married Glenn H. LOSCH circa 1907 in Indiana. In the 1920 census her name was given as Hettie. Glenn, or Hettie, was born 2 November 1885 in Indiana and died in January 1973 at age 87.

     Known children of Frederick⁵ TOUMEY and Glenn H. LOSCH were as follows:

                192      iv.    John I. TOUMEY was born 4 November 1915 in Indiana and died 1 July 2002 in Indiana at age 86. His last known residence was Dunkirk, Jay County.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army 21 June 1941 at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. Records show that he had two years of high school education and was a photographer.

                193       v.    Sylvester L. TOUMEY was born in 1919 in Randolph County, Indiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana 25 May 1942. Sylvester graduated from college and was a teacher.

 

     72.  Leonard⁵ TOUMEY (Magdalene Friederike⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 21 November 1889 in Jay County, Indiana and died in January 1976 at age 86. His last known residence was Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana. Leonard married Blanche M. JELLISON circa 1915 in Indiana. She was born in February 1895 in Howard County, Indiana.  In 1920 the couple resided in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. In the 1930 census Blanche and son were enumerated in the household of her parents John and Minnie Jellison in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. It is not known where Leonard was.

     78.  Ida Alice⁶ LUST (Rosena⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 30 November 1878 in Marion County, Ohio, and died 11 July 1972 at age 94 in Delaware County, Ohio. She was buried in Berlin-Cheshire Cemetery, Delaware County.

     Ida married William Henry REEDER 23 January 1902 in Marion County. William was born 18 June 1876 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob and Margaret (Watson) Reeder.  He, Ida and their family resided in Morrow County, Ohio in the 1910 and 1920 federal censuses, first in Canaan Township and then in Lincoln Township. By 1930 they lived in Berlin Township, Delaware County, Ohio. William died 11 March 1966 in Delaware County at age 91 and was buried in Berlin-Cheshire Cemetery.

     79.  Harry F.⁶ LUST (Rosena⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in July 1880 in Marion County, Ohio.  He died 25 March 1961in Marion County at age 80. Harry married Vina BOWSER 23 October 1904 in Marion County, Ohio. Vina was born 24 December 1883 in Nokomis, Montgomery County, Illinois and died 10 March 1957 in Marion County at age 73.

     Known children of Harry F.⁶ LUST and Vina BOWSER were as follows:

                201       i.    Harvey Paul⁷ LUST was born in 1907 in Marion County, Ohio and died 22 February 1950 in that county at age 43. He was buried in Marion Cemetery. Harvey married Marguerite YOAKUM in 1928 in Kentucky. She was born 7 June 1909 in Decatur, Marion County, Indiana, the daughter of William and Mary Yoakum, and died 4 June 1952 in Marion County, Ohio at age 43. Their children were: Harvey ‘Bud’ Paul, Jr., born 30 August 1929 and died 17 October 1950 in a plane crash at age 21 who was buried in Marion Cemetery; Ronald Dean, born 29 January 1931 and died 4 August 2005 at age 74 in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio, who married Darlene WORKMAN; Nancy A., born in 1932 and died in 1933 and was buried in Marion Cemetery; and Dan K., born in 1935 and died 10 May 2002 at age 67.

 

     81.  Emma Clara⁶ LUST (Rosena⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 7 May 1883 in Marion County, Ohio and died in that county 13 January 1941 at age 57.  She married Edwin C. Kennedy, the son of Frank J. and Olive M. (Hill) Kennedy, 14 March 1901 in Marion County. Edwin was born in August 1878 in Chariton County, Missouri. He and Emma resided in Scott Township, Marion County.

     83.  Emma R.⁶ THEURER (Caroline⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 21 September 1880 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, and died 3 January 1966 at age 85.

     She married George H. ABEL 5 November 1901 in Jay County and they resided in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana. George was born 17 May 1876 in Randolph County, the son of Aaron, Jr. and Margaret Abel, he of Oldenburg, Germany and she of Hanover, Germany.  George died 20 January 1944 at the age of 67.

     Known children of Emma R.⁶ THEURER and George H. ABEL were as follows:

                205       i.    Harry D.⁷ ABEL was born circa 1904 in Indiana. He died 24 April 1985 in Darke County, Ohio at the age of 81. Harry married Cora RHOADES 11 December 1925. She was born 23 January 1906 and died 1 September 1987 at age 81.

                206      ii.    Margaret E. ABEL was born 14 April 1912 in Randolph County, Indiana and died 22 September 2000 at age 88 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. She married Albert R. KROUSE 4 November 1933. Albert was born 16 September 1907 in Jay County, Indiana, the son of Edward O. and Rachel R. Krouse, and died 13 March 1989 at age 81 in Richmond.

 

     84.  Clara M.⁶ THEURER (Caroline⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 5 December 1881 in Jay County, Indiana. She died 20 January 1944 in that county at age 62.

     Clara married Henry V. OEHLER 19 April 1904 in Jay County. Henry was born 14 December 1879 in Jay County, the son of David and Mary Oehler, both from Gemany.  He died 31 May 1948 in Jay County at age 68.

     Known children of Clara M.⁶ THEURER and Henry V. OEHLER, all born in Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                207       i.    Clarence W.⁷ OEHLER was born 1 August 1905 and died in May 1966 at age 60. He married first Letha LEE circa 1922. Letha was born 15 December 1899 in Jay County and died in that county 14 January 1933 at age 33. The couple had two daughters: Marjorie, who married William THOMPSON, and Nadine, who married James MILLER. Clarence married second Dorothy STROBLE 20 April 1935 in Jay County. She was born 15 January 1909 in Noble Township, Jay County, the daughter of Harley L. and Nellie M. Stroble, and died 8 January 1985 in that county at age 75.

                208      ii.    Mabel C. OEHLER was born 16 June 1908 and died 20 December 1965 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana at age 57.

                209     iii.    Edna OEHLER was born 4 May 1910. She died 9 January 1989 at age 78 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

                210      iv.    Emma Louise OEHLER was born 21 September 1918 and died 23 January 2004 at age 85. Her last known residence was Delphos, Allen County, Ohio. Emma married Robert CHAMP, the son of Acie H. and Ruth N. Champ, 20 December 1942 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. He was born 5 June 1921 in Jay County, Indiana and died 12 June 2000 at age 79.

 

     85.  Charles William⁶ THEURER (Caroline⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹), commonly known as William, was born 6 July 1884 in Jay County, Indiana, and died 13 June 1965 in that county at age 80.

     He married Lillie Ann KOCHERSPERGER 2 October 1909 in Jay County. Lillie was born 1 June 1888 in Indiana, the daughter of Philip Kochersperger. She was likely the cousin of Edith M. Kochersperger who married William’s brother Albert. (See #87 below)  Lillie died 28 November 1975 at age 87 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

     Known children of Charles William⁶ THEURER and Lillie Ann KOCHERSPERGER, all born in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                211       i.    Raymond Harold⁷ THEURER was born 20 August 1914 and died 19 October 1998 at age 84. His last known residence was Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida. Raymond married Nila HONOUR 25 April 1938 in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana. Nila, the daughter of Charles and Mary Honour, was born 1 August 1919 in White River Township, Randolph County, and died 28 February 1996 in Florida at age 77.

                212      ii.    Harry Edward THEURER was born circa 1916 and died 17 July 1971 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. He was buried in Green Pake Cemetery, Jay County. Harry married Dorothea Leona FUDGE 5 September 1931. Dorothea, the daughter of David Leroy and Ora Ellen (Gile) Fudge, was born 4 May 1911 in Jay County and died 22 May 1994 at age 83. She was buried in Green Park Cemetery.

                213     iii.    Lois Caroline THEURER was born 15 September 1925 and died 18 February 1979 at age 53. Her last known residence was Portland, Jay County, Indiana. Lois married Paul GREEN.

 

     87.  Albert M.⁶ THEURER (Caroline⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 18 September 1887 in Jay County, Indiana.  He died 14 September 1972 at age 84.

     Albert married Edith Matilda KOCHERSPERGER 18 November 1915 in Jay County. Edith was born 18 October 1890 in Jay County, the daughter of Charles and Mary A. Kochersperger, and was likely the cousin of Lillie Ann Kochersperger who married Albert’s brother William. (See #85 above)  Edith died 12 July 1975 in Jay County at age 84.

     88.  Herman F.⁶ THEURER (Caroline⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 23 June 1895 in Jay County, Indiana, and died 23 June 1969 at age 74. He was buried in Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County.

     Herman married Reda KUNKLE 18 October 1919 in Jay County. The daughter of George and Mariah Kunkle, she was born 18 June 1895 in Jay County and died 27 May 1944 in that county at age 48. Reda was buried in Salamonia Cemetery.

     Known children of Herman F.⁶ THEURER and Reda KUNKLE, all born in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

                216       i.    Ruth E.⁷ THEURER was born 28 January 1922.  She died 10 January 2005 in Indiana at age 82. Ruth married Henry MOTE 18 May 1944.

     89.  Alma⁶ MYERS (John⁵, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in March 1887 in Marion County, Ohio and died in that county 12 November 1966 at age 79.  She married Willis H. RIDER circa 1907 in Marion County.

     Willis was born in May 1883 in Ohio, the son of Daniel B. and Jennie E. Rider, and died 5 November 1959 at age 76 in Marion County. Willis worked for the postal service as both a rural mail carrier and clerk. He and Alma and their children resided in Marion.

     Known children of Alma⁶ MYERS and Willis H. RIDER, both born in Marion, Marion County, Ohio, were as follows:

    Inez married Charles W. ULLMER circa 1912 in Marion County. Charles was born in June 1885, likely in Crawford County, Ohio, and died 27 March 1969 in Marion County at age 83.

     Edward married circa 1925 in Marion County Stella Emma RENGERT, the daughter of Gottlieb and Katherine A. Rengert. She was born 28 December 1906 in Ohio and died 1 January 1990 at age 83 in that Morrow County.

     105.  Matilda Rosina⁶ THEURER (Louise C.⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 12 December 1886 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana and died 15 October 1934 in Jay County at age 47.  She was buried in Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County. Matilda married Harry Franklin BALDAUF 24 December 1907 in Jay County.

     Harry was born 11 November 1885 in Jay County, and died 15 June 1935 in that county at age 49. He was buried in Salamonia Cemetery. Harry was the son of Adam and Margaret Catherine (Kober) Baldauf. His brother Daniel married his wife's sister Bertha and his sister Letha Pearl married his wife's brother Mathias. (See #106 and #107 below)

     Known children of Matilda R.⁶ THEURER and Harry Franklin BALDAUF, all born in Jay County, Indiana, were as follows (out of order):

                232       i.    Norma⁷ Pauline BALDAUF was born 19 August 1910 and died 25 July 2005 in Florida at age 94. Her last known residence was Deland, Volusia County, Florida. She married Robert JENSEN in January 1954 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. He was born 8 August 1920 and died 28 November 1989 at age 69 in Florida.

                233      ii.    Ernest  Edwin BALDAUF was born 16 July 1912 and died 9 January 1931 at age 18. He was buried in Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

                234     iii.    John Leonard BALDAUF was born 13 July 1915 and died 8 February 1985 in Clark County, Ohio at age 69. He was an aircraft mechanic. John married 10 December 1939 Helen Ruth YEAGER, the daughter of Daniel and Emma Lucinda (Kochersperger) Yeager. She was born 28 June 1918 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. The couple had a daughter Sharon Lee, born 4 September 1942 and died 25 February 2002 in Minnesota at age 58.

     106.  Bertha Eleanora⁶ THEURER (Louise C.⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 9 January 1889 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, and died 24 December 1985 in Jay County at age 96.

     Bertha married Daniel Melvin BALDAUF 29 January 1914 in Jay County, He was born 30 September 1887 in Indiana and was the son of Adam and Margaret Catherine (Kober) Baldauf. His brother Harry married his wife’s sister Matilda, and his sister Pearl married his wife’s brother Mathias. (See #105 above and #107 below)

     Known children of Bertha Eleanora⁶ THEURER and Daniel Melvin BALDAUF, all born in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

Paul married Florence LEWIS in 1939 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. She was born 7 August 1919 in Pennville, Jay County, the daughter of William A. Lewis and Lulu Maud Stout. Florence’s sister Betty married Paul’s cousin George Frederick Theurer (See #238 below)

     107.  Mathias Herman⁶ THEURER (Louise C.⁵ Mayers, Rosine Friederike⁴ Heuss, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 11 January 1891 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana and died 15 August 1980 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana at age 89.

     Mathias married Letha Pearl BALDAUF 10 January 1918 in Jay County. She was born 22 October 1890, the daughter of Adam and Margaret Catherine (Kober) Baldauf. Her brother Harry married her husband’s sister Matilda, and her brother Daniel married her husband’s sister Bertha. (See # 105 and #106 above) Pearl, as she was known, died 15 August 1967 in Jay County at age 76.

     Known children of Mathias H.⁶ THEURER and Letha Pearl BALDAUF both born in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, were as follows:

George married Betty Louise Lewis 7 March 1942 in Pennville, Jay County. She was born 22 January 1923, the daughter of William Adelma Lewis and Lula Maude Stout, and died in 1984 in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. Betty’s sister Florence married George’s cousin Paul M. Baldauf. (See #236 above)

     Inez married Herman W. CULL 17 December 1919 in Jay County. He was born 18 December 1896 in Jay County, Indiana, and died 27 May 1985 in Portland, Jay County at age 88.  Herman was the son of George F. and Anna M. Cull of Noble Township, Jay County.

     Chester, an electrician, married Catherine PICKENS 26 November 1913. Catherine was born 7 August 1893 and died 27 September 1974 in Franklin County at age 81.

                245     iii.    Chester Harold CREASAP was born 12 July 1917 and died 24 May 1943 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at age 25. He married Anna Jean Van SCHOYCK 25 June 1939.

     121.  Herman Frederick⁶ VEIT (Louisa⁵ Heuss, Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 23 October 1890 in Indiana, and died 18 August 1969 at age 78 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. Herman was proprietor of a meat market.

     Herman married Nora Helen LUDWIG 25 January 1919 in Union City. Nora was born 6 October 1891 in Ohio, and died 2 October 1977 in Indiana at age 85. Her last known residence was Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of Frederick and Josephine (Krett) Ludwig.

     Known children of Herman Frederick⁶ VEIT and Nora Helen LUDWIG, all born in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana, were as follows:

                249     iii.    Rachel VEIT was born 20 November 1924 and died 13 May 2001 in Indiana at age 76. Her last known residence was Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana. She married Thomas VOSS 10 August 1947.

 

     122.  Emma⁶ VEIT (Louisa⁵ Heuss, Wilhelm Friedrich⁴, Johann Peter Hartmann³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 28 July 1892 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  She died 24 January 1974 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at age 81, and was buried in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois.

     Emma married Charles Paul MURRAY 3 June 1916 in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana. He was born 17 April 1891 in Indiana and died in August 1987 at age 96.

     Known children of Emma⁶ VEIT and Charles Paul MURRAY were as follows:

                250       i.    John Kendall⁷ MURRAY was born 16 October 1917 in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana.  He married Doris Evelyn QUIN who was born 29 June 1920. They both died 26 April 1955 in Ontario, Canada in a boating accident. John was age 37 and his wife 34.

                251      ii.    Charles Richard MURRAY, known as Richard, was born 15 November 1919 and died in August 1974 in Ohio at age 54. His last known residence was Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio. He married Anita Jane BAKER 4 September 1943.

                252     iii.    Louise MURRAY was born 22 June 1921 in Indiana. She was a professor of English at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois. Louise never married.

     145.  Harry William⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 28 December 1882 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.  He died 8 October 1957 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 74, and was buried 11 October 1957 in Union City Cemetery.

    Harry married first Jessie M. MOOTS in December 1907 in Union City.  They divorced 2 January 1911 in Randolph County and she later married Harry R. Finney. Jessie was born 24 May 1890 in Mentor, Lake County, Ohio, the daughter of Charles L. Moots, an engineer born in Logan County, Ohio, and Mary Hawkins, a native of Auglaize County, Ohio. Her parents divorced and in 1930 Charles lived with Jessie and her husband Harry in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio. Jessie died in May 1964 at age 74.

     Harry married second Debbie DEBELL 29 October 1917 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. Debbie was born 29 January 1889 in Ohio, the daughter of James and Sarah Elizabeth (Zimmer) Debell. She was christened 20 May 1904 in Church of Christ in Columbus. Debbie died 3 September 1978 at age 89, and was buried 7 September 1978 in Union City Cemetery. She and Harry had no children.

     Known children of Harry William⁶ GIMBEL and Jessie M. MOOTS were as follows:

                256       i.    Richard Earl⁷ GIMBEL was born circa 1911. Richard was listed as "son" to Harry Finney in the 1920 and 1930 censuses, and his last name was given as Finney. It is thought that he assumed the surname 'Gimbel' as an adult.

 

     146.  Edith Mabel⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 22 April 1885 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  She died 15 April 1969 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 83, and was buried 18 April 1969 in Lisbon Cemetery, Union City.

     Edith married William Alva REISH 13 January 1905 in Union City. Alva, as he was called, was the son of Jacob and Lydia Reish of Jackson Township, Randolph County. Born 23 March 1884 in Indiana, he died 27 July 1960 in Union City at age 76 and was buried in Lisbon Cemetery. Alva and Edith were enumerated in Mississiniwa Township, Darke County, Ohio in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

     Known children of Edith Mabel⁶ GIMBEL and William Alva REISH, both born in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana, were as follows:

                257       i.    Esther Marie⁷ REISH was born 30 December 1905. She died 3 February 1992 in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana at age 86, and was buried 7 February 1992 in Spartanburg Cemetery, Randolph County. Esther married Everett E. BROWN 24 February 1940. Everett, the son of William Brown and Mary Brewster, was born 7 December 1912 in Randolph County.  He died 1 May 2004 in Randolph County, Indiana at age 91, and was buried 4 May 2004 in Spartanburg Cemetery. Everett was a farmer and was later employed by Syler Seeds in Winchester, Indiana.

                258      ii.    Mary Ada REISH was born 11 August 1907.  She died 5 March 1978 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana at age 70, and was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. Mary never married.

 

     147.  Earl⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹), a blacksmith for Big Four Railroad, was born 27 July 1886 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

     Cora Edith Mann HORNE, Earl’s wife, was born 29 September 1890 in Spartansburg, Randolph County, Indiana.  About 1909 she married [--?--] Horne and in the 1910 census was enumerated in the household of her parents, David M. and Jennie R. Mann, in Green Forks Township, Randolph County. Her husband of one year was not listed with her. On 28 June 1911 they had a son Melvin D. Cora’s husband died and she married Earl 12 August 1916 in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana. Six months after the birth of their daughter Earl died in a fire 30 October 1918 in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio at the age of 32. He was buried 2 November 1918 in Union City Cemetery. Cora died 21 January 1955 in Lakeview, Logan County, Ohio at age 64 and was buried 24 January 1955 in Union City Cemetery.

     148.  Irvin Frank⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 1 October 1888 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. He married Mary Kyle RIDDLEBARGER 2 January 1915 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. At the time of his marriage Irvin was employed as a mechanic at a factory in Galt, Ontario, Canada. By 1920 he worked at Union City Wheel Works as a blacksmith and was the last employee to be let go when they closed their shop. He and Kyle, as she was called, lived in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio by 1930 and Irvin was an inspector at Dayton Power & Light Company, a position he held for 35 years. He died 27 October 1972 in Dayton at age 84, and was buried in Glen Haven Memorial Cemetery, Clark County, Ohio

     Kyle was born 5 January 1895 in Ridgeville, Randolph County, Indiana, the daughter of Oscar and Belle F. Riddlebarger. She died 8 March 1973 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 78, and was buried in Glen Haven Memorial Cemetery.

     Known children of Irvin Frank⁶ GIMBEL and Mary Kyle RIDDLEBARGER were as follows:

     149.  Hazel Dora⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 5 February 1891 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  She married Ross Franklyn BAREFOOT, son of Walter Augustus Barefoot and Anna Elizabeth Lewellen, 24 December 1918 in Union City.  Ross was born 2 April 1889 in Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana, and died at age 57 on 21 April 1946 in Dayton Montgomery County, Ohio of unaphalactic shock from a bee sting. He was buried 24 April 1946 in Memorial Park, Dayton.  Ross was a jack of all trades, and held many jobs including meter reader for the Dayton Power & Light Company, gas furnace repairman, and inspector for Chrysler Airtemp. He also worked for Inland Corporation and United Aircraft Products, and raised chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and bees. 

     Upon the death of her husband, Hazel moved to California to live with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Albert.  She returned to Indiana and worked as a cook at the Union City Hospital from 1952 to 1956, and then resettled with her daughter Mary in the Los Angeles area.  She died 20 February 1971 in Arcadia, Los Angeles County, California at age 80. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction. At the time of her death she was an active member of Arcadia Senior Citizens and the Lutheran Church of the Cross. 

     Known children of Hazel Dora⁶ GIMBEL and Ross Franklyn BAREFOOT, all born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, were as follows:

                262      ii.    Robert Earl BAREFOOT married Mary Ellen DOTTS 31 January 1942 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Mary Ellen was born 31 January 1923 in Terra Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, the daughter of William and Rosetta ‘Susie’ Pearl (Gibson) Dotts. She died 11 January 2007 in San Diego, California at age 83 of a brain aneurysm, and was buried in El Camino Memorial Park in that city. Robert and Mary Ellen had a son Robert Dean and daughter Carolyn Sue.

Andersen, both from Denmark, was born 6 November 1913 in Cotesfield, Howard County, Nebraska.  He died 3 August 1989 in San Bernardino County, California at age 75, and was buried 12 August 1989 in Memorial Park, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Albert was an attorney for 26 years, retiring as Senior Legal Counsel for Allstate Insurance Company in Los Angeles. Mary and Albert had no children.

                265       v.    Harold Edgar BAREFOOT married Pauline Lucille VANCE and had a daughter Rebecca Jean.

 

     152.  Florence Marie⁶ GIMBEL (William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 30 July 1903 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana and was christened 6 October 1904 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Union City. She died 23 February 1994 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 90, and was buried 26 February 1994 in Memorial Park, Dayton.

     Florence married Ray Emerson TODD 28 July 1923 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. Ray, the son of J. Walter and Alameda Viola (Hamilton) Todd, was born 18 February 1898 in Bowen, Hancock County, Illinois and was christened 10 February 1924 in Hope Lutheran Church, Dayton.  He died 4 August 1966 in Dayton at age 68 and was buried in Memorial Park.  Ray was in the Air Force in Austin, Texas in 1918 and was for a number of years executive secretary for the National Cash Register Company in Dayton.

     Known children of Florence Marie⁶ GIMBEL and Ray Emerson TODD, all born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, were as follows:

          +   266       i.    Carolyn Jeannette⁷ TODD, born 19 October 1925; married James Alvin SHANNON.

                             ii.    Marjorie Louise TODD married Donald William FITZGERALD and had two daughters, Linda Diane and Cynthia Ann.

                            iii.    Nancy Anne TODD married Thomas Maximus Conlon and had a daughter Jennifer Marie and a son Thomas Todd.

 

     153.  Ernest Noble⁶ GIMBEL (Henry⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 23 April 1895 in Ohio.  He died in March 1967 in Indiana at age 71.

     Ernest married Louise BIVIN 5 April 1917. Louise, the daughter of T. J. Bivin, was born 22 December 1898 in Indiana.  She died in October 1979 at age 80. In the 1920 census the couple was enumerated with their daughter in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1930 they resided in Indianapolis.

     Known children of Ernest Noble⁶ GIMBEL and Louise BIVIN were as follows:

                269       i.    Dorothy⁷ GIMBEL was born in February 1918 in Indiana.

 

     156.  Henrietta E.⁶ GREEN (Elizabeth⁵ Gimbel, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 14 December 1892 in Indiana and died in August 1970 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 77.

     Henrietta married Michael W. WELSH circa 1913 in Indiana. He was born 13 January 1891 in Indiana and died in May 1969 in Indianapolis at age 78.

     Known children of Henrietta E.⁶ GREEN and Michael W. WELSH were as follows:

                270       i.    Dorothy⁷ WELSH was born circa 1914 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

 

     157.  Mary A.⁶ GREEN (Elizabeth⁵ Gimbel, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born in December 1899 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  She married Theodore E. NELSON circa 1921 in Indiana.

     Theodore was born circa 1895 in Minnesota.  In the1930 census the family was enumerated in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

     Known children of Mary A.⁶ GREEN and Theodore E. NELSON, both born in Minnesota, were as follows:

                271       i.    Robert W.⁷ NELSON.

                272      ii.    Marion E. NELSON.

 

     158.  Esther J.⁶ GREEN (Elizabeth⁵ Gimbel, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 18 July 1900 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. She died in December 1979 at age 79.

     Esther married Chester P. WOLFE circa 1917 in Indiana. Chester was born circa in June 1897 in Daviess County, Indiana, the son of Daniel and Eliza J. Wolfe. He was a furniture merchant according to the 1920 census. In the 1930 census Esther was enumerated with her son in the household of her parents in Indianapolis. Her marital status was given as married but Chester was not in the household.

     Known children of Esther J.⁶ GREEN and Chester P. WOLFE were as follows:

                273       i.    Chester Thornton⁷ WOLFE was born 3 May 1918 in Indiana.  He died 29 July 1985 at age 67.

 

Generation Seven

     259.  Treva Mae⁷ GIMBEL (Earl⁶, William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 27 April 1918 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. She died 24 April 1986 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio at age 67.

     Treva married first Virgil Honess WARD 27 May 1938 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Virgil was born 18 January 1912 and died 21 September 1962 at age 50. Treva married second Lee CLARK.

     Known children of Treva Mae⁷ GIMBEL and Virgil Honess WARD were as follows:

                274       i.    Arlyn Lee⁸ WARD was born 7 July 1943 in Ohio.  She died 17 June 1989 in Ohio at age 45. Arlyn never married.

     There were no known children of Treva Mae and Lee Clark.

 

     260.  William Oscar⁷ GIMBEL (Irvin Frank⁶, William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 22 November 1915 in Indiana. He died 2 April 1997 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina at age 81.  Bill, as he was called, was buried 4 April 1997 in Greenbriar Memorial Park, Columbia.

     Bill, a graduate of Fairview High School in Dayton, attended the University of Dayton and served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He spent 39 years with the National Cash Register Company in Dayton before becoming general manager of Oak Creek Development Corporation in 1973.  From 1960 to 1965 Bill was mayor of Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio. In 1979 he moved to Columbia, South Carolina.

     Bill married Louise LAWRENCE on 2 October 1937.  Louise was born 18 June 1915 and died 22 January 1988 in Columbia, South Carolina at age 72.  She was buried 24 January 1988 in Greenbriar Memorial Cemetery, Columia. Bill and Louise had a son Stephen Alex.

 

     261.  Walter William⁷ BAREFOOT (Hazel Dora⁶ Gimbel, William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 8 November 1919 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. He died 30 November 2002 in Dayton at age 83.

     Walt served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.  For 30 years he worked at the National Cash Register Company in Dayton as an assembler and job foreman, and later sold insurance. Walt owned and operated Barefoot Resort fishing camp in Cedarville, Michigan on the Upper Peninsula.

     Walt married first Freda Eleanor MOORMAN on 8 April 1939 in Dayton. Freda, the daughter of Frederick Moorman and Edna Hank, was born 21 July 1916 in Celina, Mercer County, Ohio.  She died 26 December 1988 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida at age 72, and was buried 30 December 1988 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Their children were Janice Eleanor, Carol Ann, Deborah Jean and Walter William II.

     Walt married second Vivian Marie SPARKS 14 December 1990 in Union, Montgomery County, Ohio.

 

     263.  Dale Eugene⁷ BAREFOOT (Hazel Dora⁶ Gimbel, William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 2 August 1923 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. He died 11 May 2004 in Florida at age 80, and was buried 17 May 2004 in Memorial Park, Dayton.

     Dale served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.  For 37 years he was an assembler for the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, retiring in 1985.

     Dale married Agnes Josephine SCHULZE, the daughter of Louis Schulze and Henrietta Berke, 7 February 1948 in Dayton. Jo, as she was called, was born 17 June 1924 in Minster, Auglaize County, Ohio. She died 24 August 1996 in Pinellas County, Florida at age 72 and was buried 29 August 1996 in Memorial Park. Their children were Constance Joyce, Kathleen Louise, Daniel Eugene, Gail Lynn and Douglas Edward.

 

     266.  Carolyn Jeannette⁷ TODD (Florence Marie⁶ Gimbel, William⁵, Anna Maria⁴ Heuss, Martin Ludwig³, Georg Philipp², Johann Peter Hartmann¹) was born 19 October 1925 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio and was christened 7 December 1925 in Dayton. She died 22February 2006 in Charlottesville, Charlottesville County, Virginia at age 80. Carolyn married James Alvin SHANNON 16 August 1947 in Dayton.

     The son of Virgil Quillian Shannon, Jr. and Lula Johnston, he was born 29 January 1921 in Fairburn, Fulton County, Georgia.  He died of Parkinson’s disease 5 December 1984 in Washington, District of Columbia at age 63, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Fairfax County, Virginia.  Jim served as an Army Air Force B-25 bomber pilot in New Guinea during World War II and transferred to the Air Force when it became independent in 1947.  His postwar assignments included command of a squadron in Germany and of a wing in Britain.  James also was chief of the reconnaissance division in the directorate of operational requirements at Air Force headquarters, and deputy director for operations at the National Military Command Center in the Pentagon. He received three Legions of Merit and two Air Medals. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General and among his assignments was duty as secretary to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Carolyn and Jim had children Peggy Sue and James Alvin, Jr.
