Descendants of Johan Georg Krauskopf

The surname Krauskopf is a combination of two German words, kraus, “curly,” and kopf, “head.”

Generation One

     1.  Johan Georg1 KRAUSKOPF was born circa 1728 in Darmstadt in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, and died in Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania between 23 November 1783, when he signed his will, and 9 December 1783, when it was probated.

Johan Georg was variously seen in records as Johann Georg Krauskob, Jorg Krausskopf, and John George Krauskopf, and in his will as George Krouskup. Once in America the surname spelling Krouskop was eventually adopted by most if not all descendants. For the purpose of this document that spelling will be used from Generation Two onwards.

Johan Georg came to America on the ship “Halifax,” Thomas Coatam, captain. The vessel sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, to Cowes, Isle of White, England, and on to the port of Philadelphia, arriving 28 September 1753. On the ship’s passenger list, made out by the captain, his name appeared as ‘Johannes Jerick Krauszkeep, 25 years.’ However, when he signed the Oath of Abjuration in the colonies (an oath asserting the right of the present royal family to the crown of England and abjuring, or repudiating, the right of the Stuarts and other claimants to the throne), it was as ‘Johan George Krauskop.’

According to “Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania: Genealogical and Personal Memoirs,” published by Lewis Historical Publishing Company, Inc., New York, 1945, “There are not many records of his civic activities after he arrived in this country, and the few in existence consist mainly of deeds and wills, on which his name appears as witness. From one of these deeds, made four years after his arrival, it is learned that he was a carpenter and at that time, August 9, 1757, lived in the Northern Liberties [in Philadelphia County]. This transaction was a purchase of land. The deed was acknowledged by the grantor August 10, 1757, but was not recorded until January 18, 1837. It was twenty-five years later [after 1757] before there was record of another real estate transaction, which took place May 20, 1782, when he bought some more land in the Northern Liberties from John and Mary Lynn.”

George, as he came to be known in America, was a member of the German Reformed Church, however his marriages, of which there were three, appear in records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. He married first 4 January 1756 Maria Christina WALTER, but apparently she died shortly after as on 11 January 1757 he wed Susanna Magdalena BASELER, daughter of Ulrich Baseler. Again, that marriage was short-lived, and on 14 March 1758 he married Anna Margretha WILD, by whom he had children.

On 9 August 1767 George acted as witness to the will of George Reiss, “fisher,” of the Northern Liberties. George Reiss and his wife Anna Margaretha were named as godparents at the baptisms of George Krouskup’s sons Johann George and Johann Philip, and were sponsors at the baptism of his daughter Maria Catherine.

The German custom of baptizing children with similar names or combinations of the same name creates a great deal of confusion for researchers. The following list of offspring for Johan Georg1 KRAUSKOP and Anna Margretha WILD is based on christening records of the German Reformed Church in Philadelphia and should not be considered definitive.

2       i.    Maria Elizabeth2 KRAUSKOP was born 7 December 1758 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was christened 11 December 1758.

3      ii.    Margaretta KRAUSKOP was christened 22 June 1760. She was referred to as Margaret in her father’s will. Margaret married Conrad MILLER in 1779 in Philadelphia and they were parents of two daughters identified as “Beggy” and “Getty” in George Krouskup’s will in which Margaret specifically received nothing. Instead, a bequest went to these two daughters. They were no doubt the Margaret Miller and Catherine Till who received a portion of George Krouskup’s property on Palmer Street in Philadelphia which was divided among his designated heirs 5 April 1810.

4     iii.    Maria Catherina KROUSKOP was christened 10 October 1762. In the division of George Krouskup’s property among his heirs, made 5 April 1810, she was the Catherine Wimer who received a lot on Palmer Street in Philadelphia. According to one source, Catherine may have married three times, all in Philadelphia: first to John Beamm 9 February 1783, then to John Wimer/Winer in 1810, and lastly to [--?--] Baumm in 1836. No records have been located proving or disputing this claim.

+   5      iv.    Johann George KRAUSKOP, born 12 August 1763 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; married Mary APT; married Mary Jane JONES.

+   6       v.    Anna Maria KRAUSKOP, born 1764 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; married John FULMER.

7      vi.    Johann Philip KRAUSKOP was born 17 February 1765 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and christened 8 January 1766. He was not a party to the 5 April 1810 division of his deceased father’s property on Palmer Street, but nevertheless may be the John Crousup found in the Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania in the 1810 census. He also may be the John Krouskoup in Colchester Township, Delaware County, New York in the 1800 census, the same location as brother George Krouskoup (see #6 below).

8     vii.    Maria Magdalena KRAUSKOP was born 28 August 1766 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was christened 14 May 1767. She was not a party to the 5 April 1810 division of her deceased father’s property on Palmer Street, and is thought to have been deceased.

9    viii.    Susanna Margaretha KRAUSKOP was born 8 March 1768 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was christened 13 March 1768. She was not a party to the 5 April 1810 division of her deceased father’s property, and is thought to have been deceased.

10      ix.    Susanna KRAUSKOP was born 27 February 1769 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was christened 19 July 1769. She was named as Susannah Rhoadhand in the 5 April 1810 division of her deceased father’s property on Palmer Street in Philadelphia, but her married name was very likely Rotan. It is thought that she married Frederick ROTAN in 1789 in Philadelphia and had children Frederick Rotan, Jr., William, and Mary Ann. Mary Ann married Samuel Pennington and had a daughter Susan Pennington, born circa 1820, who married Uriah Cox, who was born circa 1819 in England. That couple had a daughter Sallie Cecelia Cox, born in March 1853 in Pennsylvania, who married circa 1882 William Bennett Tuttle, son of William and Abigail Tuttle, who was born in May 1849 in Strafford County, New Hampshire. Sallie and William had a daughter Helen Taylor Tuttle, born in March 1890 in Colorado, who married Dr. Philip Work, son of Hubert and Laura A. Work, born in June 1888 in Colorado. Their children were Susan, Laura, and Elizabeth.

Generation Two

     5.  Johann George2 KROUSKOP (Johann Georg1) was born in August 1763 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, and was christened 17 June 1764 in the German Reformed Church in that city. He died 22 December 1851 in Jefferson Township, Logan County, Ohio at age 88. George, Sr., as he was known, was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery, Logan County.

George appeared on the census of 1800 in Delaware County, New York and was in Hancock Township in Delaware County in the 1810 census. He and his family went to Logan County around 1812 or 1813 and settled first in a rude village known as Belleville which disappeared once the city of Bellefontaine in Lake Township was formed. At the time of his death George resided in Jefferson Township.

George married first Mary APT in 1782 in Philadelphia. She was born circa 1763 and may have been the daughter of George Appt who was in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County in the 1790 census. Mary died some time before 1792, the year George married second Mary Jane JONES. Mary Jane was born 1 April 1774 in Goshen County, New York and died 26 July 1851 in Logan County, Ohio at age 77.  Mary Jane was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery. Her father may have been either Solomon Jones or David Jones who were witnesses to a deed between George Krouskop, Jr. and George, Sr., and Mary Jane on 8 July 1807.

Known children of Johann George2 KROUSKOP and Mary APT were:

+   11       i.    George3 KROUSKOP, Jr., born 8 February 1783 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; married Sarah CODDINGTON.

Known children of Johann George2 KROUSKOP and Mary Jane JONES were as follows:

             +   12       i.    Sarah3 KROUSKOP, born 18 March 1796 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania; married Samuel GILLILAND.

+   13      ii.    Nancy KROUSKOP, born 26 August 1800 in New York; married James BLACK.

+   14     iii.    Jacob KROUSKOP, born 20 October 1800 in New York; married Martha THARP; married Elizabeth McCloud MILLER.

+   15      iv.    Cynthia K. KROUSKOP, born 1811 in Pennsylvania; married James WILKINS.

+   16       v.    David KROUSKOP, born 7 May 1813 in Logan County, Ohio; married Mary Ann CALOR; married Nancy Isabel MILNER.

17      vi.    Ellis Wright KROUSKOP was born 15 November 1815 in Logan County, Ohio and died 5 July 1841 in Logan County at age 25. He was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery, Logan County.

     6.  Anna Maria2 KROUSKOP (Johann Georg1) was born in 1764 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was christened 9 October 1776 in Pennsylvania. She was also known as Mary, so named in her father’s will. She died 25 January 1842 in Philadelphia County at age 78, and was buried 30 January 1842 with her husband in North Laurel Hill Cemetery in that county. Her will, signed 19 December 1841, was probated 14 February 1842.

Mary married John FULMER circa 1785 in Philadelphia. John, the son of Michael and Catharine (Zoll) Vollmer, was born 3 May 1763 in Pennsylvania and died 22 August 1824 in Philadelphia County at age 61. It is not known when he began using the spelling Fulmer for his last name. He was buried first in the German Lutheran Burial Grounds in Philadelphia but his body was re-interred 27 April 1839 in North Laurel Hill Cemetery in the family lot.

John purchased a tract of eight acres in Northern Liberties for 500 pounds on 5 August 1795. Records also show he purchased two of the “Vinyard Lots” 4 May 1799 and 29 December 1809. In 1814 his name appeared as "John Fulmer, carpenter" for the first time in the Philadelphia City Directory.  He and his family were residing on Palmer Street near Duke Streets which was in the Kensington district of the old Northern Liberties. This was likely the property Mary received in the division of her deceased father’s property 5 April 1810. On 3 December 1817 John purchased a dwelling at 10th and Buttonwood Streets, in Penn Township, from his son-in-law John Widener, and lived there the balance of his life. He left a will dated 20 March 1821. Michael Fulmer, John’s son, sold his interest in his father's estate for $5000 on 4 September 1844. The deed of conveyance gives the name of the testator, John, his widow and all the children who were living when it was executed, and thus stands as proof of John Fulmer's family.

Known children of Anna Maria2 KROUSKOP and John FULMER, all born in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, were as follows:

18       i.    Johannes3 FULMER was born 3 September 1786 and was baptized 24 September 1786 in Pennsylvania. He died after 1844.

+   19      ii.    Nicholas B. FULMER, born 21 February 1788 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; married Jane CARSONS.

26      ix.    Thomas FULMER was born in 1801. He may have married Mary Vaux.

+   27       x.    Mary FULMER, born circa 1803; married William GILBERT.

28      xi.    Michael FULMER was born in 1813 and died after 1880 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Circa 1838 he married Sarah [--?--] who was born circa 1814 in New Jersey and died between 1870 and 1880 in Philadelphia. Michael was a butcher. The couple had daughters Amelia, born circa 1839; Emeline, born circa 1847; and Sarah J., born circa 1849 and died before 1860. They had a son William, born circa 1845, and a son Henry C., born in July 1842, a butcher, who married circa 1865 Mary C. [--?--], who was born in October 1846, and had children Samuel C., born in May 1866; Sarah, born in 1870; Edgar D., born in October 1874; Amelia, born in May 1876; Emma, born in November 1880; Hemmings B., born in October 1882; and Frank A., born in September 1884. Michael and Sarah also had two sons who were pioneers in the new professional sport of baseball. Washington Fayette Fulmer was born 15 June 1840 in Philadelphia County and served in the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry in the Civil War. Circa 1866 he married Amelia A. [--?--] who was born in October 1847 in Pennsylvania. Washington was a 35-year-old rookie on 19 July 1875 when he played in his one baseball game, going 2-for-4. He appeared for the Brooklyn Atlantics who won only 2 games in all of the 1875 season, the last season of the National Association’s existence. Washington was a fireman in Philadelphia at the time of his death 8 December 1907 at the age of 67. Charles John Fulmer, another son of Michael and Sarah, was born 12 February 1851 in Philadelphia and debuted 5 June 1871 in the major leagues. As ‘Chick’ Fulmer he played 11 seasons – with the National Association at its inception, with the National League at its inception, and with the American Association at its inception. Primarily a shortstop at a time when fewer games were played in a season, he never appeared in more than 92 games in any one season. Beginning at age 20, he played in all five seasons that the National Association existed, hitting .307 for the 1872 New York Mutuals, third highest on the squad. He was in the National League in 1876 and in 1879-80 when he was an infielder for the Buffalo Bisons. As a 31-year-old veteran, he still played well for the pennant-winning 1882 Cincinnati Red Stockings, hitting .281. In 1883 his five home runs and 53 RBI’s were among the league leaders, although his batting average was below the team average. Chick played his final game 16 August 1884. Circa 1875 he married Annie V. [--?--] who was born in October 1856 in Delaware, and they had two sons: John H., born circa 1877; and Charles F., born in August 1878. Chick died in Philadelphia 15 February 1940 at the age of 89.

Generation Three

     11.  George3 KROUSKOP, Jr., (Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 8 February 1783 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. He died 22 March 1854 in Jefferson Township, Logan County, Ohio at age 71, and was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery, Logan County. His estate was probated 28 March 1854 in Logan County.

George was the second school teacher and the third auditor in Logan County, serving from 1832 to 1846. He was an election clerk in Logan County beginning April 1817 but left office in August 1818.

George married Sarah CODDINGTON circa 1803 in New York. Sarah was born 13 March 1787 in that state and died 28 January 1861 in Logan County, Ohio at age 73. She was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery. While not proven, her father may have been Joseph Coddington, born 26 February 1756, who married first Elizabeth Jones 11 April 1781 and second Eunice Mott 23 February 1786, both in Goshen, Orange County, New York. In the 1790 census there were three Joseph Coddington in Ulster County, which is located just north of Orange County. In 1797 Delaware County was formed from Ulster and Otsego Counties and in the 1800 census Joseph lived in Colchester Township, Delaware County as did George and John Krouskoup [sic]. By 1818 Joseph Coddington lived in Logan County, Ohio. The first election in Lake Township, Logan County, held in that year included the electors Joseph Coddingham [sic] and William Coddingham [sic], thought to be Joseph's son, as well as George Krouskop. Both Joseph and William Coddington voted in Jefferson Township, Logan County 14 March 1818. The 1820 census for Logan County shows Joseph Coddington with 1 male under 10; 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45 and over; 1 female 16-26; 1 female 45 and over. William does not appear as head of household in Logan County,  however he possibly is the male 26-45 in Joseph's household. According to one source, Joseph returned to New York and supposedly died after 1843. The father of the Joseph Coddington in question is said to have been Thomas Coddington, born 27 November 1712 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey who married Phoebe [--?--] about 1743 in New Jersey.  This Thomas was the son of Benjamin and Mary.  Benjamin was born in Middlesex County 8 October 1680 and died in 1753.

Jacob and his family moved from Logan County, Ohio to Richland County, Wisconsin in the spring of 1851.  In 1848, prior to moving, he had visited Richland County and contracted for the erection of a saw mill at Sextonville. When the family arrived in the region three years later there were only three buildings set in the wilderness. Jacob immediately began operating the saw mill that had been built for him, and in 1853 erected a grist mill on Willow Creek. He sold the saw mill to his son George in 1860 and then went to Ash Creek and constructed a carding and woolen mill which he operated until 1865.

Jacob married first Martha THARP 23 May 1826 in Logan County, Ohio, but she died in January 1828 in Logan County and was buried in Tharps Run Cemetery. They may have had a son David who died in 1831 and was buried in Tharps Run. Jacob married second Elizabeth McCloud MILLER, the widow of Isaac Miller, 18 August 1831 in Logan County. Elizabeth was born 19 August 1802 in Ohio and died 20 March 1884 in Richland County, Wisconsin at age 81. She was buried in Sextonville Cemetery. Her son Philip H. He was buried near his home but the body was later removed to Sextonville Cemetery. The second death in Buena Vista was that of Sarah Janney, also a child of Isaac and Elizabeth Miller, and the wife of Phineas Janney. She died 21 March 1847 at age 21. The couple also had a daughter, Marie B. Miller, born in 1821 and died in 1906, who married James D. Keys in Ohio.

Lybrand, a business he continued to operate until 1878 when he built a new general store and implement business and engaged in the lumber and wholesale hardwood business. Abriel also owned about 2000 acres of land. He never married and left an estate valued at $1.65 million.

60      vi.    Cynthia Ann KROUSKOP was born 3 January 1844. She died 18 April 1855 in Richland County, Wisconsin at age 11, and was buried in Sextonville Cemetery, Richland County.
