Gold 110's Tournament Report - May 2, 1999

As some of you may know from my previous reports I don't get the "play-by-play" aspect going. Instead I report the final standings and comment on the tourney as a whole.

Let's get it on!

First of all we had 13 players show up...most in quite a while and I was pleased to learn I am not the only TD in Toronto running tournies anymore, 2 others have kicked in (maybe I can play one of these days) but this tourney was all about new blood...and I loved it!

Besides our 13 players we had 6 or so onlookers...swccg players from the past and future checking out our great game, including our 2 ladies.

The days was full of upsets and great decks. The best deck I saw was by far an amazing Dagobah Drain. You say whaaa, dago drain ? I say hell yah. Using dagobah's swamp and jungle plus the generic swamp jungle and forest Gus De Murtas dropped encampment, ithorians, gas miners and clouds. Of course bcotu and decree killed it, but it was a very intuitive deck none the less...I tipped my hat!

We had a couple HB, a couple ISB ops, a couple Normal Ops, Ralttir ops, and 2 MWYHL...one of those actually trained!

I must admit Andrew Liu has made Jedi Training decks an awesome possibility...he trains and trains...then retrieves force back via On the edge once SYIT is flipped to. Plus the ever so evil surprise assaults and afa's.

Remo Palladini (any Palladini is a pal of mine!...Sorry, old Toronto car commercial joke) has perfected the cloud city lift tube drain, and worked it to perfection!

But in the end I heard a line from the movie...."When I left you I was but the learning, now I am the master!" Andrew Meyer, whom got in touch with me from a phantom listserv message I replied to can honestly say "The Circle Is Now Complete". Andrew came to us from Hamilton, and his collection of cards was moderate at best. We started playing on a weekly basis and needless to say I won the majority of the games. Then he finds internet trading and jumps in with 2 feet. He took a little advice from me and what I had played against him and a little from the BBSers. Andrew showed up at my house the Thursday B4 the tourney with the blessing of my girlfriend to "kick Blair's ass!". And he did just that...On Sunday he repeated that task by going 5-1, stealing a win because of all the timed games the day had produced. In fact our top 3, though all good players, were basically new to the medal podium. It was refreshing, and all the players rejoiced in an awesome tourney!

Here were the standings

  • On a side note, a gentleman by the name of Paul was one of our onlookers. He had just recently moved to Toronto from New York and was basically trying to get into the game. He picked up the odd game versus our early finished and bye players (as well as me). At days end he walked out with a mint of cards. All unwanted prize support went into his pocket including quite a few rares. The generousity of the Toronto players still overwhelms me and I am proud to say i am one of them.
