Tournament Report - 5/2/99 - Newton, NJ - Mint City Comics
I decided to trek out to Newton for another day of Star Wars despite the fact that it was another beautiful day in New Jersey. I was kind of glad though when I showed up and the TD Scott Carver told us that 1st prize would be a box of Endor when it came out! Too bad he didn't advertise that fact or he probably would've gotten a bigger turnout. 11 players showed up, including my usual fellow competitiors Rob Middleton, Rich Haman and Jason Lembo (our TD from yesterday). The rest of the players were local to this area, the TD Scott helps many of them out w/ their strategy and is slowly but surely helping many of them become pretty good players. I took the same decks I did yesterday, LS Bothawui/Speeder/Ops and DS Mains & Toys.
1st game - DS vs. Josh Ribeiro's CC Celebration deck
It was pretty clear that Josh didn't build his own deck, it actually looked like a pretty good deck, but he didn't know how to play it at all. He started w/ Bespin and no starting effect. I got out Vader early to drain, he got a Red Squadron X-wing to Bespin. He later dropped a lone Chewbacca on Cloud City and I beat him up w/ Zuckuss and EPP Fett. Later he dropped a few more little characters on Cloud City and I Elis'ed over Vader, gave him his Saber, dropped Tarkin and beat up a bunch of guys. I spread out to drain w/ Blizzard 2 at the Defensive Perimeter. He dropped 2 Eloms to block my drain of 3 w/ Vader and Tarkin. They died quickly. I beat up some more weak characters he deployed and drained him out. Win by 30 (2 +30).
2nd game - LS vs. someone's DS balance space/ground deck
He started w/ Coruscant and no effect. I didn't get too good of a draw but I dropped EPP Leia, Bothan Spy and an Operative at the Forest. He deployed the Devastator and ABCTTU on Coruscant. I had the Tantive in hand but no pilot so I drew to find one and came across EPP Luke!. His turn he just drew, leaving the Devastator alone to protect his ABCTTU. I got all my sites out of my reserve deck and dropped the Tantive and Luke and took out the Devastator and ABCTTU w/ it. He beat me up at Coruscant and I lost Luke and the Tantive ran to Bothawui. I then got enough Operatives to flip and my drains were set up. He chased around my Tantive for a little until I forgot to move it. He put the beatdown on my Tantive and I houjixed :). He had a lone probe droid draining at the Wastes and EPP Obi took care of that. I just spread out on Bothawui and I had my Speeder beatdown, but he never deployed to an exterior site until his last turn and I drained him out. Win by 25. (4 +55)
3rd game - LS vs. Rich Haman's ISB Garrison deck
We played this matchup yesterday so we both know what we're in for, but it turns out to be a completely different game. My opening hand is terrible, no Operatives, 4 Rebel Speeders and Maneuvering Flaps though :). I was pretty sure he wasn't playing Monnok so I drew over 12 cards (knowing 1 Monnok would lose me the game). I drew my 1st 2 turns and got no operatives! Thankfully my 3rd turn gave me 3 Operatives and I was pleased. Meanwhile he set up Vader, Vader's Saber and Tarkin at the Ice Plains. My turn I dropped 2 Ithorians, an Engineer and 3 Operatives to flip. He had drawn up a lot of cards and on his turn he dropped Chall Bekan, an ORS, Ozzel and 5d6 on my planet to flip his objective and also set up Imperial Decree w/ Vader and Tarkin at 1 site, ORS and Ozzel at another, Chall in a Walker at a 3rd. Right about now I realize that my opening hand maybe wasn't too bad after all :). I lock my Maneuvering Flaps, deploy 6 power 4 Speeders for 6 force, Harc Seff piloting 1, EPP Leia and an Incom Engineer to the site w/ Ozzel and the ORS. I battle, hit Ozzel, and my power is 33 to his 9! He loses all his guys and 21 more force. Then Harc Seff does his drain canceling, I get a Bothan Spy down to Double Agent his 5d6 and I drain for large amounts. Win by 26 (6 +81)
4th game - DS vs. Rob Middleton's Bothawui Operatives
I'm not looking forward to this game, knowing that if he flips his objective I'll be in some big trouble. I start Bad Feeling Have I and he starts Bargaining Table. I get a Darth Vader in opening hand, but not much else of use and draw up 1st turn. Pulled everything I needed, a 2nd alter, a Masterful Move and Vader's Saber. He draws up as well and Windchimes for an Operative on his turn. I activate 1 force and he Windchimes again for an Operatives and I smile. I play my Masterful Move to get a Monnok and play it. He loses about 4 Bothan Spys, 3 Bothawui Operatives and 2 Houjix (everything he needed to flip next turn). He's left w/ a pretty good hand though, EPP Luke, an Ithorian, a Control, EPP Han, some other things. His turn he draws up, I drop Vader w/ his Saber and try to Alter his Bargaining Table, he controls, another alter, another control (argh). So I draw, find another Alter and this one goes through :). His turn he drops EPP Luke and Wioslea, he battles, hits Vader, I hit Wioslea, everyone dies and I lose a few force cause he pulled a good destiny (he does that a lot this game). My turn I just draw up and get out some more locations, Coruscant and the Holotable. He deployes Melas, an Ithorian and an Operative to his Forest. I respond w/ Blizzard 2, fail to trample an Operative and put Evazan on board. I battle and he pulls a 1 destiny, I kill Melas and he loses a couple of force. He deploys Han Solo, battles and kills Evazan and the walker (just when I had picked up EPP Fett too, oh well). He also deploys Goo Nee Tay. I deploy Jabba the Hutt to my Jundland Wastes and a Monnok on the Holotable, I try to alter Goo Nee Tay but he controls it. His turn he draws, I play a Monnok and get 2 Obi-Wans and 2 Nabrun Leids and see that he's got an EPP Luke in hand. I draw some cards and save force for an Elis Helrot. He drops EPP Luke and a Hnemthe to battle Jabba but he flees to the Farm :). He then drops Tawss Khaa and an Operative to face off against Jabba. My turn I drop EPP Fett, Blizzard Scout 1 and battle. I hit the Operatives, draw 2 destiny, he loses both and a few force, I lose the Scout Walker. Luke and the Hnemthe eventually make their way to my JP and he gets out the Tantive at Bothawui (and I've lost most of my ships to drains). So he's got a drain of 3 @ the forest, 2 @ JP and 1 @ Bothawui. I've got 1 @ the Holotable and 2 @ his Farm. I get Vader, Vader's Saber and Tarkin in hand, but w/ Goo Nee Tay and the Hnemthe out there's no way I can get them both down. I drop Bubo at the Forest and Vader goes to take out Luke. Luke hits Vader again, and I take out the Hnemthe. He pulls another good destiny so I lose Vader and a few, both his guys die. Bubo eats his Operative. His turn he drained, deployed another operative and he managed to kill off my Bubo :(, my turn I moved Boba and Jabba over to the Forest to block his drain. He ran to the Farm w/ Han, a new Operative and an Ithorian and deployed an Ithorian and an Operative to his Swamp. My turn I dropped Evax and Cabbel (the dynamic duo) at the swamp and moved Jabba and Boba to block the drain at the Farm. He Nabruns Han and company to the Swamp but it costs him all 4 of his force left so he can't battle. My turn I drain 2 @ Farm, 1 @ Holotable, and Elis Evax and Cabbel to the Wastes to drain 2 more. He gets in a 3 drain at the Swamp and 1 @ Bothawui but my drains are too much, I drain him out next turn. Very tight game. Win by 5. (8

I'm the only undefeated player so I take the tournament and the box of Endor! I get a pack of cards which get donated to a young kid who stopped by to watch the games (he walked off w/ a load of cards). Also got another Obi-Wan shirt. Another fun tournament, not quite the same level of competition as the previous one but fun nonetheless.
