Jeff Kahan's Bespin and Beyond Report - February 6th, 1999

Just wanted to say what a wonderful time I had running Dantooine's first Bespin and Beyond Scenario tournament! It was unfortunate that we only had 8 people show up but I think I can speak for all the participants about having a great time!

Here are the results of the tournament... with veteran Matt Lush in the lead after the final game:

Matt Lush 10 (+102)
Chris Gregg 10 (+69)
Brian Guthrie 8 (+33)
Mark Million 6 (+29)
Ted Woodward 4 (-11)
Aaron Pawlik 4 (-39)
Joseph Amaya 4 (-63)
Andres Ortiz 2 (-120)

There were a number of decks that appeared today. A few DS Corulag operatives decks faced a few Bothuwai Operatives, a few CC Troopere decks for both sides faught fiercely. There were 2 Carbon Testing decks a HB deck with B-wings and a LS Tatooine Mains deck...

It was a dark time for the Empire though... with only 8 wins to the Rebellions 16!

Notable plays included using wounded wookie and a corulag operative to cancel EPP Ben's game text, using Quick Reflexes to retrieve multiple Hidden Weapons, Using Blasted Droid and Dr. Evazan's blaster to mow down the LS, a Krayt Dragon eating EPP Ben as well as others.

The most touching moment in any Star Wars CCG event occured at this tournament, between Matt Lush and Brian Guthrie. I have never been witness to a greater display of sportsmanship before. After a completely unintentional illegal move that cost Brian over half of his reserve deck, I felt the need to intervene. Matt had constructed his deck around the LS Lobot's game text, assuming that the 'react' deployment restriction DIDN'T apply to the "or to the same site as Lando", and depoyed 14 CC troopers for free and battled for an obscene and, I must say, quite impressive 81 power. This move in one turn depleted Brian's reserve deck almost completely. The three of us, all feeling silly about missing the game text, came to a reasonable compromise and the game continued intensely without the battle occuring. It was a close game and Matt Lush managed to maintain the advantage and win the game.

After being declared tournament winner, Matt recieved the shirt and INSISTED that Brian take the shirt. After the usual, "Thanks so much but I can't" and "Oh but I insist" etc... Brian accepted this gracious offer from Matt. The sportsmanship exhibited by these two veterans made me proud to be a tournament director and supporter of the SW:CCG environment. I hope that we all can take this example into account and realize that this game is about friendship, camraderie, honor and respect, not just about winning. And also understand the drastic restrictions on the LS Lobot ;!)

I hope everyone had as good a time as I, and I look forward to running additional Bespin and Beyond scenario tournaments!
