Tournament Report - Cedar Knolls 4/24/99 - Fat Moose Comics
I made it out to my 1st tournament in a few weeks, it was nice to get back into the flow of things again! Only 8 players showed up, possibly because I had to tell the TD that the tournament wasn't up on the website like a week before it was to be held, he got it up the next day though. Some of the regulars were missing, although John Lolli and Shaws Brosovich made their 1st appearance at the store unexpectedly so it was sure to be a tough tournament.
I stuck w/ the same LS deck I played last time, my Bothawui/Rebel Speeders/Operatives deck. For DS I made an all new deck, it was basic DS Mains. Started w/ JP and either Twi'lek for Bad Feeling or Surface Defense for Secret Plans and Resistance depending on my opponents starting. 4 Vaders, 5 Alter, 4 Sense, 4 Monnok, pretty standard.
1st game - DS vs. ????? MWYHL/Surprise Assault deck
I didn't catch this kids name, I've seen him a few times and I know he's pretty good. I start Bad Feeling to slow down the mains. 1st turn I get a Masterful Move and fetch the Holotable. Deploy Kashyyyk, get the Audience Chamber and draw up. He gets out Yoda. I drop Avenger and Evax at Kiffex, 2 Monnoks at the Holotable. He doesn't find Luke next turn so he draws for him. I drain, drop Blizzard 2 at JP and from what he's losing I know to expect some Surprise Assaults and/or Baragwins (lots of high destiny devices). He completes Jedi Test 1, and I get out
Vader to do some additional draining in the AC. I'm pretty set w/ nothing he can Surprise Assault draining, and he's not doing much but saves a lot of force. He drops EPP Leia and Han at a site w/ Harc Seff, Wyron Serper and a Baragwin to beat up my Blizzard 2 but I just Ghhhk. I
eventually drop J'Quille at the AC w/ Fett and Evazan while Vader ventures outside on Tatooine. He gets Obi down to the AC, moves JQuille and takes out Fett and Evazan w/ a 6 destiny. I drop Tarkin w/ Vader and Elis them to take out Obi and move outside w/ Vader, Tarkin and J'Quille
to chase after Leia and Han. He eventually decides to fight, Dark Lord manages to choke Leia w/ a tracked 6 destiny and I pretty much slaughter him. All his characters are dead and I just drain him out. Win by 23 thanx to lots of cards in hand (2 +23)
2nd game - LS vs. Shawn Brosovich's Tie/Skrillings
I played Shawn a few weeks ago and he beat me, I've seen him a few times since, he's a pretty good player, although the deck matchups were not w/ him on this one. He starts Kashyyk and Den of Thieves and I pretty much know what to expect. He gets out Dreaded Fleet too, so he's
canceling 2 drains per turn. I get a 2nd turn flip of my objective w/ 3 Ops, 2 Sic-Six, and an Ithorian. He gets out Ties but his only drain at Kashyyyk is getting Bargaining Tabled. I get out 3 more sites, w/ an Operative at 5 of the 6. He gets out 3 Skrillings and inserts, but it's
his 12 to my 8 so there's not much damage there and I've got no reason to activate anymore. He eventually gets out Hoth and Yavin 4 for Decree but I'm still draining for 7. He drops 4 Skrillings at a site and I activate some force and get hit for 4 w/ the insert and fortify the site. He
loses his fofeit 2 Skrillings pretty quick and I drain him out in a real quick game. Win by 25. (4 +48)
3rd game - DS vs. John Lolli's LS Mains
John's a really good player, he's pretty happy to be not playing my LS Ops and I'm looking forward to playing his Mains w/ my Mains (although not too confident). He starts Yoda's Hut w/ Goo Nee Tay, me JP and Bad Feeling Have I. I play a 1st turn Masterful Move to get the
Holotable and pull the Audience Chamber. He drops the Cantina and draws up. I play Dark Lord into the Cantina to force some action. He activates and draws a few I think. I force drain and he It Could Be Worses for 2, I sense, he controls it. I kick myself for not Monnoking 1st, and pay 4 to see his hand. He's got an alter, Ben, Obi's Saber, EPP Han, Nabrun, another It Could Be Worse, some other stuff. I've only got Zuckuss in hand to reinforce Vader and that's not enough, I draw some cards to find a Ghhk, and get nothing much except another Masterful Move which I use to get my Ghhhk. He activates and saves force. I force drain and he It Could Be Worses again, I draw to find something to help me against the ensuing beatdown, get Vader's Saber, Darth Vader, EPP Fett, You Are Beaten so nothing to save the Dark Lord but I leave 1 force so I can surely Ghhhk.
His turn he drops Ben Kenobi and EPP Han saying "this will cost me the game" and he batttles. I choke Han w/ a destiny 4 (alter), he misses Vader, pulls a 0 for destiny, I pull a 6 (circle). Vader takes out them both! I try to push my advantage quickly and drop Zuckuss at the Lar's Farm I just converted, use the AC text and find Dr. Evazan only, and put EPP Fett w/ him. I get in a little draining and he drops Ben Kenobi and kills off Zuckuss and I lose a few cards I didn't need anyway. I Elis Vader to Ben to try and get my Circle Is Now Complete off before he can draw but I'm left w/ no force to play it :(. No problem though, he only draws 1 Sense, and I've got a handful of Alters so Ben is Circled. I drop Evax and Cabbel at JP to do some more draining. His turn he puts EPP Luke in front of Daddy and draws some. I Elis Fett and Evazan over to Vader, drop Blizzard Scout 1, battle, hit Luke, pull a 6 destiny and he loses Luke and another 11, while I lose Vader (he got hit) and Blizzard Scout. I put Bane in the Cantina to drain, he battles Cabbel and Evax w/ EPP Leia and she takes Evax w/ her. Next turn he sits a Monk in front of Bane and I respond w/ Vader and the ensuing battle damage pretty much ends it. Win by 26. (6 +74)
4th game - LS vs. John Lolli's Hunt Down/Huge Force Loss deck
I'm the only undefeated so I know if I can just keep it close I'll win the tournament, but I want the win! John has been laughing about his DS deck all day long and I soon see why. He starts w/ PotF on the Holotheater and drops Vader there 1st turn. He plays a Fear to make
me lose 2 from hand or 1 reserve (I always chose 1 reserve). I activate, he plays A Dangerous Time to re-arrange my force. I draw it all anyway. He force drains at the Holotheater and puts his own objective out of play (weird move) and plays more Fears, Defensive Fires, Imperial Supplies to get more force. My turn I've got enough force to flip, so I drop 3 Operatives, 2 Ithorians and a Sic-Six (stupidly not putting the Sic-Six in the middle). He plays Limited Resources on my tiny hand and I lose 2 from reserve. His turn he replaces Vader w/ Dark Lord, Elis Helrots Vader, chokes my Operative, pulls a 5 destiny, I lose the Ithorian and 8 more. He continues playing Fears. I Windchime for an alien and he Visored Visions me for 1. I drop the Bothan Spy I got at his Holotheater, pull another site, and run away from Vader, keeping my Sic-Six 1 site from him so he can't Elis. I'm finally starting to get some drains in, but I've already lost half my deck! He moves Vader to block a drain and I get off some nice drains and move my guys away from him, and follow w/ the Sic-Six and draw to get a decent # of cards in hand to stop Limited Resources. His turn he moves Vader away from my Sic-Six and Elis Helrots Vader back to the Holotheater to face off against my Bothan Spy there. My turn I drop 2 Incom Engineers at the Holotheater and move the 3 guys to the Med Chamber. He Elis Helrots Vader back to Bothawui and takes out an Operative on a Speeder but the Speeder survives. We're both running out of force, me trying to keep my hand size up, he keeps Defensive Firing, playing Fears to try to get me down to 2. In the end I've got 5 force left total (2 in life, 3 in hand) he draws to find a Defensive Fire to go w/ his Limited Resource to win him the game after his Fear, but he doesn't find it. I drain him out. Win by 2. (8 +76) I've never almost lost a game where I got force drained for like a total of 4 force all game, but this one was way close. Very cool deck John made.
For prize support I got 8 packs of WB, pulled a Vader's Saber and as far as I know that was the best card pulled out of the whole box! I got a Jabba the Hutt t-shirt too, it's my 4th, I think I should start to collect them or something :P. Next week I've got 2 more tournaments I think, so look out for more tournament reports from them.
