An Interview with Beakman

To celebrate breaking the 20,000 mark, I thought you might like to know something about me. So QJ got to work and gave me a helping of my own medicine.

When did you start playing SW:CCG and why?
Well, it all started one Christmas. QJ had bought this nifty game for her kid brothers, but they already owned it so it was sitting on her coffee table. Being the star wars freak that I am, I was staring out it. So she gave it to me. I thought it was pretty cool. I read the instructions and then proceeded to try and figure out attrition... which took forever! Later, I was at the card store Mega Comics in Gainesville. I happened to venture to the back and saw someone talking about SW:CCG. I thought it would be neat to collect all the cards. That day I bought a starter and 5 packs. Much later I met Joey (local TD... goes by GAWD on the BBS) and he told me about gaming night. This was actually the day Dagobah hit the streets because I met him waiting for the cards to be dropped off to Mega Comics. I've been playing ever since.

What was the first main you ever owned and how did you get it?
In one of those five packs I pulled a BB Obi-Wan Kenobi. That was the only main I had for a loooooong time! :-)

How much Long Island Iced Tea can you drink before you ralf?
Hmmm... I guess it depends on what I mix with it! :-)

Who is your most feared SW:CCG opponent?
For a long time it was Robbie Simpson, a (once) local of Gainesville. As I got better, this changed to GAWD, who I could never seem to beat. I always got nervous when I played him, like it was some kind of milestone to beat him. As I grew in the game and learned to relax, this has suddenly shifted to QueenJawa. I can NEVER beat her it seems. She knows what, how, and why I play the way I do. She can read me extremely well, and she knows how to antagonize me so that I can't keep cool. You know, the makings of a great player! :-)

Pop quiz 1: when not in use, should the toilet seat go up or down?
You know, there's nothing worse than having to take an emergency midnight pit stop (meaning no time to mess with turning on silly lights) and falling into the toilet because someone forgot to put the seat down.

How much money do estimate you've spent on the game so far?
Somewhere between the amount in my wallet (nothing) and the national debt!

What is your favorite line from the Trilogy?
But I think I'm going to have to go with Yoda's monologue to Luke after the trainee fails to raise the X-Wing from the Bog. Yoda says, "For my ally is the force, and a powerful ally it is. Life breeds it, and makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we... not this crude matter. You must feel the force around you. Here, between you... me... the tree... the rock... everywhere."

Who's your Daddy?
Hmmm... that could be the line from a song! :-)

If you could design one card that Decipher was guarenteed to make, what would that card be?
Well, it would look something like this. It would be a dark side effect.

**Imperial Blockade
Destiny 4
Immedite Effect
Lore: Imperial Star Destroyers used there gravity wells to simulate the gravity of planets causing starships to drop out of lightspeed or preventing fleeing ships from using their Hyperdrive.
GT: Target an interrupt or Effect just used to retrieve force. That card is placed underneath this one and opponent must lose +1 force for each copy here. (Immune to control if Imperial Star Destroyer on table.)

What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Currently, I am dabbling in Oreo cereal. Of course Fruit Loops and Raisin Brain or all-time staples of my morning diet.

What strategy would you most like to be able to play in a tourney, but just isn't up to par right now?
Hmmm. For the Light Side, I'm pretty fascinated with Jedi Training, but it just isn't happening in the tournament setting. Too many good counters and the deck is a bit too card intensive. For the Dark Side, Hunt Down and Destroy The Jedi. You have to deploy too much to defend your butt while being prepared to duel AND deal with retrieval, AND Hidden Base, AND everything else.

How did you acquire the name Beakman?
This is a bit of a story. When I rushed my fraternity, I received the nickname Beaker on my jersey... (long story). Anyway, I went to get an email account from school and Beaker was taken. (Ironic thing is is that QJ knew the guy who was hogging up that addy.) Anyway, I really liked the Science show Beakman's World, and it was kind of close to Beaker... so I went with it. And tah-dah!

Pop quiz 2: If someone buys you a sweater for Christmas and you don't really like it, should you a) wear it and pretend to like it, b) take them up on their offer to give you the reciept so you can exchange it for something you do like, or c) stuff it in the back of a drawer somewhere and pretend you never saw it?
On the advice of council, I decline to answer this question.

What card do you consider to be a "gift from God?"
Capt. Han. this guys a monster in the Falcon. Add in Rayc Ryjerd and he's nearly invincible... unless your opponent Set for Stuns Rayc just before initiating a Tallon Roll with Lateral Damage on the Falcon! :-)

What card do you consider to be the "spawn of satan?"
Dead tie. Inserts and the Onith beeyatch. I think both these cards lead to bad things for the game.

Pop Quiz 3: When is your girlfriend's birthday and when is your anniversary together?
Confusious say, "Never even joke about not knowing such things." So... February 19th and January 21st (respectively). :-)

Of all of the decks you've ever played, which on is your favorite?
Hmmm. That's a toughie. For the light side, I really like my training deck. For the dark side, I had this space fleet deck that did well for a while. I really enjoyed playing it, and it was my own creation. (Side note: Of course, it couldn't hold a flame to the storm of Light Side space power now. There's something wrong when one X-wing can singlehandedly take out an Imperial Star Destroyer... or be as powerful as one. I hope Decipher fixes this mess!)

What card would you consider to be a staple in your deck making?
This has evolved from expansion to expansion. Forgetting cards like Traffic control, I would say The Signal (and counterpart). This is such a strong card. It economizes the deck by allowing you to play with less effects while recycling a really high destiny back into the deck.

What was your favorite thing about Special Edition?
I like the Objectives though I think some of them weren't as well thought out as they should have been.

What was your least favorite thing about Special Edition?
The amount of thought and testing that went into some of the new card mechanics. This was perhaps the worst play tested set to date. I can't believe some of the cards that got through play testing. Operatives aside, cards like Power Pivot are silly powerful. Let's see... Power 0 Executor. I don't think so! This should have said starFIGHTERS. And after all their hype, CPI and attack run didn't receive much of a boost and no objective. Phooey!

What is the worst thing you have ever smelled?
Does Madaline's puppy pooh count? That's pretty, knock your socks off, disgusting.

What's the best thing you have ever smelled?
There's nothing quite like the smell of a freshly oiled leather baseball glove, or the smell of pine during winter.

What would you most like to see in the Endor expansion?
I would really like to see a way for the DS to probe HB without having to have a ship in space. Like if the occupy 3 battle grounds or Rebel Base locations or something. I would like to see a new Chewbacca and Threepio... both with game text actually worth using. I would also like to see the light side get an interrupt that lets you steal starships and vehicles that are unoccipied, or a way to battle walker pilots to steal such vehicles like Chewie did in the battle of Endor. My hopes are high for Endor.

To close, give us some words of wisdom.
Always check your shoes after walking a dog!
