These interviews are meant to take an interesting look at those in
the SW:CCG community that we know a little about. Hopefully these will
reveal some new things about the people we talk to on the internet.
If you could rid the planet of one SW:CCG rule, which one would it be and why?
Oh jeez...any one rule, huh? Lemme take a look at the ole book here.
Hmm...this is hard, I actually like most of the rules. Possibly the Jabba's
Palace Cantina-Docking Bay- Mos Eisley rule. I've never quite understood it.
It seems like they actually were trying to incorporate a story line argument
into the game, which is admirable, but seems to make for just another rule.
I think it'd be fun to put Deserts on both sides of my Mos Eisley, and use
the GT to pull off a shuffle from halfway across the planet. :)
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Favorite kind of cone?
Definitely Peanut Butter and Chocolate, if it's in a bowl. Kinda hard to eat
that in a cone. Favorite kind of cone? Probably a big ole Waffle cone with
Mint Chocolate Chunk...drool.
What is your hometown?
Memphis, Tennessee in actuality, McLean, Virginia in spirit. I was born in
Memphis, but I moved to McLean when I was two, and lived there until I went
to college.
How many hours a week do you spend on the Internet?
Jeez. When you have a permanent connection that maxes out at about 900
k/sec, and your computer is right next to your bed, it sometimes gets a
little frightening to realize how much time you spend on the internet. Don't
have any real time frame, but I average about 5 hours a day in class, so I'd
guess it'd be about 10 hours a day. I usually do homework and type papers
and things of that nature in between reloading the BBS, though.
What SW:CCG card do you think is the "spawn of satan?"
Demonic Hordes...oh, wait. I've always hated numbers with a passion, but
less so since Jabba's Palace came out. I think now that they're manageable,
I can actually see the strategy behind them, though they are still pretty
lame. I guess one of the satan cards would be Asteroid Sanctuary. I fear it,
mainly because I always, always play primarily ground, so I would most
likely never be able to cancel it without Point Man. Perhaps SE will be a
change for the better.
What SW:CCG card do you consider to be a "gift from God?"
A Gift? Heh, perfect set up. Many of the cards from CC shocked me the first time I saw them, because of their power. Smoke Screen, Punch It!,
Uncontrollable Fury, Wookie Strangle (yes!), and such. Lots of great cards
in that set. Possibly the one that I liked the most was You are Beaten,
though. So very, very powerful and dangerous, and I don't think it's quite
caught on like it deserves. Possibly the EPP mains w/ lightsabers will
change that.
What is your greatest SW:CCG moment ever?
Ahh...my third tournament. I was playing my Scum and Villainy deck. My
opponent had overtaken my Audience Chamber, sending my Gailid, Vader, Jabba
and Mosep into the lost pile. In the space of three turns, I Trap Doored
Chewie into the jaws of my waiting Rancor, only to be followed by the
biggest catch of all, Obi-Wan! I actually drew a 5 to hit Obi with the Trap
Door, the lowest I could've pulled, in what was surely the pivotal moment in
that game.
What size shoe do your wear?
Good question. 11's, I believe. BTW, I wear Payless shoes...only 15 bucks a
year! Sweet.
Who is your favorite Looney Toons character?
Hmm...Having difficulty separating Disney from Looney Tunes...been too long.
Offhand, I'd have to say I've always had a love/hate relationship with Wile
E. Coyote. I mean, the guy's so persistent, but we have to wonder why he
even bothers after a while. I think he likes the pain. Wile E. Coyote is a
sadomasochist, you heard it here first, folks!
What is your worst SW:CCG moment ever?
Losing the last game of a tournament (after going 3-0) to a bunch of
Klatoonian Revolutionaries. My opponent had something like 5 of them, with a
few other cards, and beat Vader by something like 23 force, after he
Nabruned to my Jabba's Palace site. Almost won the tournament... :(
What card do you consider to be a "staple" of every deck you make?
Geez. The only cards I put in pretty much any deck would be Controls, and
There Is No Try/Do Or Do Not. JP added in Twilek/Signal. If I had to pick a
single one (more interesting than those, at least), it'd have to be Obi-Wan.
I've made Scum and Villainy decks without Vader, but I think Obi-Wan has
been in pretty much every deck I've made, even alien-oriented and Space
decks. If only he didn't have such a weakness in TCINC. That's not too
interesting, either, I suppose, but I find that most of my decks have
shifting content.
Of all of the characters in the Star Wars universe, who do you think you are most like and why?
Seriously? Chewbacca. Fairly quiet (in real life, I have many less
inhibitions in anonymous cyberspace), but somewhat temperamental, and loyal
to my (few) friends. I walk around naked, too.
What is your favorite moment out of the original Star Wars Trilogy?
Oh, man. So many choices. For sheer bone-chilling terror, the Cloud City
duel. As predictable as it seemed, the action is fierce. The line...
"Obi-wan never told you the truth about your father!" "He told me you killed
him!" "Luke...I Am Your Father!" Agh! Sends shivers down my spine every
single time...one of the most impressive moments in modern cinema.
What are you going to be for Halloween?
Hmmm...a physics student! The horror! THE HORROR! I have strange fantasies
of going to class dressed in an authentic Darth Vader suit with a voice
chip, so it'd sound like I was Vader, throwing non sequiters around left and
right. "So, uh, Vader, do you have the homework I assigned?" "If only you
knew...the *power* of the dahhhk side!" Barring the expense, I would
seriously do that! Oh well, I don't think halloween is too big of a thing
around here, so I think I'll just dress up as a physics major.
What is your favorite type of cookie?
Not really a cookie man, myself. I do like those Samoas, though, and the
Thin Mints those little Girl Scout temptresses throw around. Sweet morsels
of temptation...and my mom is saving some for me for when I get back
home...yum!
What is the most unusual thing you have ever pulled off during a SW:CCG game?
This probably doesn't count, but at a couple of tournaments I attended
recently (an OSD and Swiss, my second and third tournaments, respectively) I
pulled a WB Light Repeating Blaster Rifle, a quadruple. DOH! No way I could
use that thing in an OSD tournament. Then, prize support...another LRBR, my
fifth! Then, during my Swiss tournament prize support, ANOTHER LRBR! My
sixth one! Argh! Of course, I can't complain, I pulled Boba Fett (fifth) and
Luke Skywalker (third) from my Swiss prizes, too. :) Since that doesn't
count, I'd have to say the weirdest thing I've ever done in a game of SW is
prevent my opponent from draining me all game, except for three force, which
I retrieved with Figrin. I won the game by 42. :)
If you could insist that Decipher use one picture or scene from the
trilogy, which one would it be and why?
That part where C-3PO is standing with the Comlink, saying "Oh, listen to
them, they're dying! Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!" Oh, jeez,
that is just a genuinely good laugh, and I think it'd be cool if they could
make a funny interrupt or effect based on it. That patented Decipher humor
could make it worth a laugh or two.
How much is the doggy in the window (the one with the waggly tail)?
Probably not as expensive as his shots and neutering will wind up being.
Watch his tail after that... :)
What is your favorite SW:CCG game mechanic?
TIE: Trap Door / Rancor or the Sarlacc. The DS has some stable, relatively
easy retrieval! And it's fun! You have to build a deck around it, sure, no
big loss.
What was the name of the first girl you ever kissed?
Um...girls are icky? Seriously, though. I was kind of (actually, severely)
dorky in high school, way too shy to actually ask a girl out, and now that
I'm here in college, with 10,000 or more amazingly attractive women around,
I can't find one I like. Not that I really try, either. I'm still awfully
shy, and I fear rejection with a passion. I guess I'm just waiting for my
special someone. I'm not into the whole "relationship for the sake of a
relationship" kind of thing that so many people seem to like around here. If
I'm going to be involved with someone, I want it to be meaningful and
committed, and I haven't found someone I like that much. Man! I should've
given the easy answer: "I like men." That would've been interesting, to see
who would respond how. You could've done another sociological examination of
the listserv!
Anything else you want to say?
Um. Not really. Disdain conformity, in all it's mischievous guises. Advice
from me. Also, never try to spellcheck an email with a bunch of Star Wars
terms in it, it's a waste of time. Thanks for picking me to be interviewed!
I like attention, as much as I deny it. Keep up the good work on Beakman's
World/QJ Speaks. :)
