Gainesville Tournament Report: July 26, 1998

I had been brooding over a Light deck the entire week, and at 4 am Sunday morning, after several failed attempts at trying to get card table to work with OCF, I finally put it together. I decided to do something I never had done before, play with destiny adders. I knew that in order for my strategy to work, I was going to half to play aginst someone with some ground forces. If I played a space deck, things could become bleak indeed.

I came to the tourney not expecting much from my Light deck, but totally confident with my Dark deck. I was hoping I could win one game with the Light side and both with my Dark side. If I could do that, I knew I would probably place well.

I was happy to begin with my Light Side deck. Playing Light Side first often has an advantage because its possible to play a less difficult opponent.

He started with Kashyyk and There is no Try. I started with the Guest quarters. Crud. He had started with two of the worst things possible. I knew a space deck could mean trouble. I would have to coax him down. And starting with do or do not would render my senses a liablity if it came down to prtecting my Nabrun Leids.

But to my luck, he deployed Myo alone to the Quest Quarters. I had the Lower Corridor in my hand, so I deployed that and began to wait for characters to come out.

Meanwhile, he had deployed clouds to Kashyyyk, which really surprised me. Even though he was draining me for five force a turn, I couldn't understand why he had done such a thing. Why hadn't he started with Hoth? Then he could make the cloud really hurt.

It didn't matter. He had given me what I wanted without even trying. After five turns, I still didn't have a traffic control, but I had deployed Princess Leia, Chewie, and Obi-Wan with his Lightsaber. In my hand I had Rug Hug, Courage of a Skywalker, and Jedi Presence. It was time to create havok.

In that on battle, I hit Myo, making his forfeit 0, Chewie was power 12, Leia power 14 after playing Courage of a Skywalker. The I drew three destiny. And that was the game. Ten minutes long. Possible a record in our area. It was a good morale booster for me. I had alread met half my goal by winning with the Light Side. First game: 2 victory points and +19 differential.

My second game was against a tough competitor. I was playing Manipulation. He started with Yoda's Hut, and I was curious as to what his plan might be. I played a Dangerous Time. Asteroid Fields, senses, and Asteroid Sanctuary. When I scanning crewed him, I realized that he didn't have any systems in his hand, and so I proceeded to keep them away.

Son of Skywalker came out on his first turn. He could now play sense with little worry. But it was of no bother. I spread out and drained him. He finally got a ship down at Kessel and began draining. Two turn later I dropped the Executor. Ability ability ability did it's damage, and the victory proved easier than it should have been.

I talked with him afterwards. He asked what would make it work. I told him that if he had started with Dagobah, things might have played out differently. He agreed. We had time to play again, and even though he didn't have Dagobah to start with, the game was a lot closer. Second game: 4 victory points and +51 differential.

The third round would prove to be my biggest match of the game. I was playing a pretty good player, but I was the Light Side again. We revealed our starting locations. He started with Hoth and Imperial Decree. I had seen this deck before, new it's inner workings. And I knew I could beat it.

But my opening draw was lowsy. Chewie, Senses, Controls, and a Nabrun. He used Twilek Advisor to pull out Bad Feeling Have I, and things looked a bit worse. But I didn't dispair. After a few force drains, I found Leia. She came down with Chewie and Anakin's Saber and drained for one force for a few turns. Obi-wan and Capt Han hit the table shortly afterwards, and then came the beat down: Vader, his saber, and Tarkin. I was chuckling inside.

He initiated the battle and targeted Obi. He drew a two and I three. I targeted Tarkin. drew a two and a four... which he didn't cancel. I was certain he would cancel the second destiny. But he didn't. I hadn't left one force for Jedi Presence, but I still played Courage of a Skywalker. I drew a five for destiny. He cancelled it. Then I played Protector on Life Debt. I didn't do so well on these draws: two, one, zero, three, and four. But it was enough. Vader and Tarkin both went, plus some. I forfeited Leia.

He was shocked. He said something about not knowing I had those interrupts in my hand. I laughed inside. There was more where that came from!

He was now draining me for four at the Defensive Perimeter with Motti and DS-61-3 and one in the clouds. I played Nabrun, and jumped to where he was. This time I had enough to use Jedi Presence. But I forgot to target. The Jedi Presence really hurt him, Capt Han Power 8, Chewie power 14.

There was one more battle involving Han, Luke, and Obi-Wan on Cloud City, against Djas Puhr, and that was the game. It had proved much easier than I had expected, but still just as nerve racking. I was now at six victory, and 80 some differential (I lost track here). It had been a good game. A one shot deal.

My final game was against another Dagobah sancturay deck. He had a terrible draw and I monnoked him for 7, including 3 controls and two sanctuaries. It was lucky on my part.

He did get an Asteroid Sanctuary going, but it was too late. I won, remaining the only undefeated person (finishing with my highest differential ever +108). I was very surprised. I hadn't won a tourney in a long time, and I was proud to win when in the tournament with so many other good players competing.

After all was finished, I had played all the top five players with the exception of QJ (who placed two differential shy of 3rd. Congrats QJ). Boy am I glad I didn't play her. She has an uncanny way of beating me (GRIN).

My winnings included a Leia shirt and 13 packs. I got a WB Obi-wan in one of them. Not a bad days work!
