APPLICATIONS UNLIMITED!
Second only to the Diamond in hardness, Tungsten Carbide's (T.C.) extreme versatility make it an invaluable tool wherever the shaping, grinding, roughing or other processing of non-metallics is required. Footwear applications include roughing, both of uppers and of the unitsole, toe pounding, for all types of upper materials, heel scouring, heel breast sanding, sole edge finishing (pre-trimming), heel flap reducing, shank reducing, buffing and sanding rolls, bottom roughing, outsole roughing, vamp roughing, marginal roughing, ripple cutters, routing, shaping and many others. Because it is available in such a wide variety of grit sizes and coatings, T.C. abrasives generally operate faster, smoother, and with less damaging heat generation than any other abrasive means.
Since almost any shape can be produced in a Tungsten Carbide abrasive form, applications impossible to achieve in any other way become economical and feasible. Even such unlikely items as reducer / rougher bandsaw blades can, in many cases, be replaced by T.C. coated discs! Rubber, leather, PVC, urethanes, fibreboard - an almost limitless variety of natural and synthetic materials can be processed with Tungsten Carbide abrasives.
Real economics can be achieved if a properly engineered survey is made in any factory, to ascertain where savings can be made by substituting tungsten carbide abrasives for exiting tooling. The most obvious places for T.C. abrasive is, of course, to replace grinding stones, emery discs or belts, wire brushes and toe pounding wheels, etc. There are, however, many areas where the use of T.C. may not be so obvious, but where the need for this unique material may be even more important. In this field, the use of T.C. abrasive shapes as feed or retaining media should receive the utmost consideration. Feed Rollers on such items as strap-cutters, etc., when replaced by T.C. coated steel rollers, become much more positive in their feeding action, and have a useful life many times longer than that of the most complicated knurled rollers. An added bonus here is that the exceedingly hard surface of the T.C. abrasive gives excellent friction characteristics, improving the feed action of normally slippery items, such as vinyl coated fabrics, bindings, etc. Other feed applications include feed wheels or rolls for pre-trimming machines, cementers, littleway grooves, etc.
As with most tools, the assistance which can be provided by the manufacturer can prove invaluable to the customer, and any reputable supplier will be ready and willing to evaluate your shoemaking needs, and either suggest standard tooling for the job, or design special shapes to best suit the particular need.
It should also be noted that in all cases, properly designed T.C.A. shapes can be stripped of their abrasive, and regritted to original or other specifications, when their useful life is over.
