A MUSICAL COUPLE

Bandura and Piano Duet

FEATURING

Yuriy and Ola Oliynyk, a husband and wife team of professional musicians, offer lecture recitals, artifact exhibits, Pysanky - Easter Eggs workshops, and concerts featuring the music, culture and history of Ukraine. An overview of Ukraine and its people's accomplishments since prehistoric times is presented in sessions ranging from 45 min. to 2 hours in length for a variety of age groups ranging from preschool to adult professionals. For very young audiences a Ukrainian fairy tale is presented with dolls, stuffed animals and live music. A special program entitled "Around the World in 80 Tunes" has been added recently by popular demand. Music of Australia, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania will be discussed and illustrated by live performances. Ola Herasymenko Oliynyk performs on a Ukrainian bandura. Yuriy Oliynyk joins her for duet performances at the piano.

OLA HERASYMENKO OLIYNYK, 
born in Lviv, Ukraine, is the first professional bandurist to have been featured as a soloist with American Symphony orchestras. Her next appearance as a soloist with a symphony orchestra will be in Sacramento in the fall of 1999. She will be performing a premiere of her husband's 4th Concerto for Bandura and Orchestra. Prior to settling in the USA, she has performed extensively with Bandura Trio under her direction in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Spain, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Recently, together with her husband, Yuriy Oliynyk, she has performed in many lecture recitals presenting Ukrainian music, culture, and history at colleges, universities, museums, and libraries. Ola received her Bachelor's degree at the Lviv Lysenko Conservatory (now Lviv Musical Institute) in her native city of Lviv and her Master's Degree at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory in Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine.

YURIY OLIYNYK,
born in Ukraine, has been performing concerts, composing and teaching in the USA for many years. Since 1989 he has performed in join concerts and lecture recitals with his wife Ola Herasymenko. He is the composer of four concertos for Bandura and Orchestra, a Piano Concerto and numerous pieces for piano, bandura as well as vocal compositions. Most of the concertos have been performed by both American and European symphony orchestras. In 1996 maestro Zvonimir Hacko, music director of the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, commissioned a new concerto for bandura and orchestra from Mr. Y. Oliynyk. A grant by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission was approved to complete this concerto for a performance in 1999. Mr. Y. Oliynyk received his Bachelor's degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music and his Master's degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is listed among Ukrainian American composers in the 1993 edition of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine published by University of Toronto Press Inc., and the 1997 Biographical Reference Directory of the Ukrainian Encyclopedia in his native country. Currently he is teaching music at American River College in Sacramento.
