Welcome! Welcome to the first issue of our newsletter! We are planning to do one for each season and share what we're doing in homeschool. We hope you like it!
A Poem
Acorns By Dulcie
Chrysanthemum I love Chrysanthemum. She goes to school and everybody thinks she's a flower. They pretend to pick her and smell her. They say she lives in dirt with worms. And she feels dreadful. Her music teacher says her name starts with a flower too. It is Delphinium. And she says "If I have a baby, I will name it Chrysanthemum. I think it's absolutely perfect!" And Chrysanthemum is happy. The end. By Keni (Editor's Note: This is a narration of the children's book Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes.)
New Arrivals We have "adopted" new friends who will be living at our website. They've just moved in, so be sure to stop in and meet them!

Becca
I love Becca. She was my cat, and she was
old and she died. Becca was very important
to me, and I love her so much I don't want
her to die. Every day when I get up and
look out the window I think of her.

A Recipe for Fall When it gets cold we like to have a fire in the fireplace. This is our favorite dessert to have by the fire. Smores Break graham crackers in half, and put chocolate candy on the cracker. Roast a marshmallow in the fireplace and put the marshmallow on it. Then put half of the graham cracker on top. Then eat it! Yum! By Dulcie

Our Field Trip to Amish Country
In October we went to Ohio with our homeschool group
to learn about Amish people. While
we were there we went on a buggy ride, went to a
museum about Amish and Mennonite people, went on a
tour of an Amish farm, and rode on a train for the
first time.
![]() The buggy ride was my favorite part of our field trip. When we came home I wrote this story about Amish buggies. Amish Buggies
Amish people don't use cars. They ride in buggies. The
buggies are black, and are pulled by horses. I got to
ride in a buggy, and it was so much fun! It was fun for
all six of us - Mike, Mom, Dad, Kendra, and me, and the
driver!
The buggy had plastic windows but they were rolled up,
and it had an orange triangle on the back which meant
caution. There were two seats, and the driver held the
reins so the horse knew what to do.
We stepped on steps to get into the buggy because it
was high. It wasn't like getting into a car. I felt
cold riding in the buggy. It was a cold and rainy day.
It was a bumpy ride because the wheels are thin. It was
loud, too. The buggy was pulled by a brown horse. It
had horseshoes on to protect its feet.
The driver let me drive the buggy by holding the reins.
Keni was scared because she thought she was going to
fall, but Mom held her. I want to ride in a buggy again.
It was fun! By Dulcie
Mary Cassatt Mary Cassatt was a great artist. She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She went to Paris, France when she was seven and she looked at the great museums and paintings there. She wanted to be an artist too, so her dad sent her to a painting school. She spent as much time as she could painting at museums and copying great artists' works. She was a good artist, and some times her sister Linda and her brothers and family came to visit her. And one day she got an invitation from America to paint a mural, and it was so long that the people had to dig a ditch so she could reach the top! And then at the art fair it disappeared. There is a painting we can see now that people think was a study for the mural. A group of painters asked her to join them to paint their own paintings and not what the judges wanted them to paint, and Mary Cassatt started painting her own way. She painted real people in everyday life. She didn't have any children, and she started to paint the love of mothers for their children. I like her paintings, and I want to be an artist too. By Dulcie (Editor's Note: This is a narration of the book Mary Cassatt, by Mike Venezia, a part of the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists series.)
Homeschool Projects Since our field trip we have been working on projects for our homeschool group. Mom and Keni have been making a model of a farm and talking about farm animals and why farmers raise them. They printed the pattern pieces for their farm from the internet. Here is their project:
![]() Dad and Dulcie have been building a model of an Amish buggy. Dad designed it and they built it out of cardboard and odds and ends. While they worked on it they talked about why Amish people don't drive cars, and learned about how a wheel and axle is a simple machine. Here is their project:
